The LAST OUTLAW: Harry Tracy
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 9 ก.พ. 2025
- Considered by some to be the last of Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch, Harry Tracy blasted his way out of prison in the summer of 1902. What followed was one of the most desperate man hunts in all of U.S. history. Over the next two months, Tracy would lead hundreds of lawmen, including the National Guard, on a deadly game of chase that would see at least seven men gunned down. According to the papers of his time, “In all of the criminal lore of the country, there is no record equal to that of Harry Tracy for cold-blooded nerve, desperation, and a thirst for crime. Jesse James, compared with Tracy, is a Sunday School teacher.” But who was the real Harry Tracy? Where’d he come from? What started him on a life of crime? And did he really ride with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid? This is a compilation of previously released material.

I'm related to him through my mother's family... She actually got to hold his revolver in the museum it's in several years ago...
Very cool
Stop lying, that’s sad
What’s up baby girl?
@@babygurlcrichlow2341 Very cool indeed
@@babygurlcrichlow2341 that's kinda awesome 👍👍
Thanks for saying the “Wild West extravaganza “ correctly.
Hey…
You started it.
Some of us always appreciated that intro.
Yeah me too!!!
"Shut of" is a phrase you don't hear enough of nowdays. Thanks for trying to keep it going, Josh.
@@Some_call_me_Tim I do my best
Just found your podcast, Josh! I was born in Billings, Montana 58 years ago now, and raised in the Pacific Northwest, so many of your awesome stories and historical re-imaginings cover areas in which I grew up, rivers I fished with my father and grandfather (the Snake, for example), and towns, cities, and geographical areas where I have trudged, camped and lived from time to time (Colorado, Spokane, the Green River area, etc.)…damn, man! You Bring the Past Alive...and I thank'ye!
That's awesome, you've lived a great life, man!
My house is filled with freeloaders drinking my good booze who are alternating between telling me “you put on a few pounds” and “holy crap you’ve lost a lot of hair” so the respite this video is providing will go a long way in preventing me from becoming famous for the Wisconsin Thanksgiving Day massacre. Happy Thanksgiving, I hope yours will be less annoying than mine my friend.
Haha
Lol, one of the best comments I've seen in a hot minute.
People like to poke fun, at least you have someone paying attention. For me, in my 30s, I spent so much time working to pay bills my general appearance was in decline. If i could have taken a couple years off to relax and concentrate on emerging health issues I would've been much better off. Its hard to find the time but knowing what I know now, i wouldve dropped everthing and rode the rails if I had too just to gain the perspective of a free man not just a 9 to 5 er.
@@JasonBeinor 100% 30's are the grind time for careers.
@I told a story hoping to amuse folks by highlighting issues most people deal with during the holidays. But your story is something many people deal with and with that in mind here’s a story. A few years back my company was building a new facility in rural VERY RURAL KENTUCKY and when I was working with a realtor to find the land everything pointed to near the border with West Virginia he said “do you know ANYTHING about this area” and all I knew was coal mines were shutting down and people need jobs and he said “no, do you know about the people” and he told me a joke “do you know why we know the toothbrush was invented in this area” (pause) “because if it was invented anywhere else it would have been called the teethbrush” the joke was completely unfair and the area is breathtakingly beautiful and the people are great but after I was living there for 6 months on nothing but Pizza Hut and McDonalds I realized (or chose to) he was just emphasizing how isolated the area is and since construction had to continue over the holidays so I was stuck there. I was single no kids but it was still very difficult. Why am I telling you this, I know how you feel and if you’re in Wisconsin next Thanksgiving you have a spot at the table.
Great episode.
One note on pronunciation: my cattle ranching forbearers used 'traipsing' a lot and pronounced it with a 'tray' rather than a 'trap'. And dropped the 'g' of course. Other forms too: "Traipse on down to Nanny's and tell her berries are ready for pickin'. And take the snake dog with you. I saw a big rattler on the road earlier."
I really miss my dad and grandmother's stories and their vocabulary from an earlier time. Your channel brings back memories and I appreciate it.
Definitely "TRAYP-SIN"
Yep
Your ramblings are eagerly anticipated, thoroughly enjoyed, and in some cases - informative, Thank you for your hard work in research and writing your shows, Casey in AZ

Thanks again Josh for the best historical narratives on the interwebs.
Tribal knowledge here in central Wyoming has it Harry Tracy was held in distain by the Hole in the Wall Gang as " witnessed " by being
" ran off " from Brown's Hole.
Oral history is worth what you wish to attribute to it.
Best Wishes to You, Your Family and Friends.

That's the opening i needed. Extrrrrrrravaganza!
Great episode Sir.
1,0000000000% love it when he does that! You know out the gate it’s a banger episode!

Happy Thanksgiving!
I love your video. This is an era that is wonderful to learn more about. The old photos are so interesting.
Thank you Deborah
Awesome! Been waiting for someone to "Do Harry"... As teens friends and I used to camp in a cave that Harry Tracy stayed in for a couple days, just before they got him about 24 miles east. We could never figure out why we had to deal with so many rattlers, turned out there was a den 75 feet around the corner.
the cave is 47.64464951273567, -118.90880291217937 He bummed food off the farm 3/4 mile downstream on the creek.
Very cool
loved the video ,I keep picturing Danny McBride talking .
Bruce Dern probably one of the best bad guy ever on tv and movies great actor .another great show Josh🇺🇸👍
I lived in Creston, my mother , grandfather and many other family members lived in the area. It was definitely a story at campfires back in the day. I remember it well. Thank you.
For those wondering Harry's bounty of $4,000 in 1902 is worth $146,740.93 in (2024)when adjusted for inflation and cumulative price change.
How this channel keep creeping past my algorithm? It needs so much more of it, not a Pat Garrett surprise every thanksgiving
Warshington, lol! Great video. Thanks for the upload.
You got it.
I also heard a tale Tracy was hold up in a house watching the Stones on PBS. He was quoted to say that ol Fred and Barney cracked him up and that Betty was a juicy berry.
Josh I think you need to block 😢his guy.
Never heard of this guy but I should have. This would make a great movie. And I mean a new one. I live in Spokane so it was easy to follow his trail around Washington.
I agree
The burbs.. best Bruce Dernn movie.

Being a crim, screw or lawman is signing up for a possible early grave and most blokes accept that as par for the course...even if all try to avoid it.
Thanks again Josh!

Weird twists in this story😎 why would folks want pieces of his body after he was dead🥲
Souvenirs

Hello from John Wayne town, Maricopa, AZ
Hellooooo
I have one for you to look into Josh, not sure how you can present it, but Millers 101 ranch( don’t hold Oklahoma against them) it’s an amazing story
I'm originally from Sonoma County Northern California (Black Bart territory) but I've been living in Oregon for half my life now and you're right, the land here hasn't changed much since Harry's time and our state Governors haven't changed at all lol. 🎩
I've been trying to remember the title of a book I read when I was a teenager. I bought it at Books a Million sometime around 1995. I couldn't put it down. I remember my girlfriend at the time was pissed because I spent so much time reading the book, instead of paying attention to her lol. It was a large hard back book. It had chapters on 10 or 12 different gunfighters/outlaws. One chapter was on Tracy. Also had chapters on John Wesley Hardin, Wild Bill Hickok, Billy the Kid, Tom Horn, Bat Masterson, etc. I'd love to find out the title so I could order one. I've looked on Ebay and several other online book stores, but I haven't been able to find it. I'm pretty sure it had gunfighters in the title but I'm not sure. It's not the one from Time Life Books Wild West set. Any help would be much appreciated.
Harry’s code was the best of them all you ask me. Most live by “a code” and we love them for it this dude actually showed us how the “code” as I believe truely is!! Tracy was for the $
Bruce Dern is awesome
Happy Thanksgiving josh
As a resident of WA and OR, Having been to many of these cities I really appreciate this Video. Thanks. Have you done one of these on the McCarty's? You should check out the book "In persuit of the McCarty's"

Harry was probably so much trouble (not smart and brutal) Butch probably wanted him gone cause he was bad for business!!
Maybe
Funny Harry Tracey had really short hair
Harry Tracy doesn't sound nearly as cool as Harry Trouser Snake.
Agreed
Happy Thanksgiving 🩸🦫

Praying, my friends have a wonderful thanksgiving, I myself have a lot to be thankful for, josh I can't do more than 30 minutes, so I hate to admit it but I miss alot of your content, I know it's my problem, but I try.
Happy thanksgiving, James!
by god, fast and deliberate is hard to beat.................................................................................................................................................................
Hell NO... keep ramblin...AWESOME
Oh God...can you imagine "I got this patch of skin for the outlaw Mr. Tracey!" It's like okay, good luck providing that and what the hell are you going to do with that? Put it in a Mason jar with some parsley next to the preservatives?
Any chance we could get a episode on Isadore Gonzales? ... Mexican rough rider from Buffalo Bill's 'Wild West Show' who died when a bronc allegedly rolled over and stomped on him...
There is a cool Tom Russell song about him.
I’ll check him out
Harry Tracy's son Richard, aka Dick Tracy went on to restore the family name fighting crime with the likes of Joe Jitsu, Go Go Gomez and Hemlock Holmes.
Facts
Omgosh he is from my next of the woods ... 509 Washington..
Thompson is one of the most prolific hustlers all time. No debate on that.
Also straight crash dummy.
You got me... I hit the sub & Like button....good job....!
Tracy was a desperate dude for sure I like his tenacity would not of wanted any of anything he had to give for sure
He's still in prison.....prison graveyard anyways!
Love this guy lol
Running to a large city is one of the worst ideas you could do. Especially considering the media would tell everyone who you are and there are cameras everywhere. No, the best move is to get out of the country.
Don’t people in the country also have this media you speak of?
@WildWestExtravaganza
No, there are plenty of countries that do not have cameras all over the place Mexico is one of them).
Tracy did ride with the wild Bunch. It may not have been for very long. I have a photo with Tracy and Sundance together.
You have a lot of photos huh?
@ yes probably close to 1000. It’s weird how they just find their way to me. by the way. Love all the great work you’re doing. It’s giving me a lot of motivation to continue to strive to find the truth of what really happened to Billy I am so close to putting the final touches on the truth. I can’t wait to share with you probably at the end of January.🤙
So first date just wrapped up, took your advice and I couldn't ask for a better wingman! I only copped a lude behaviour instead of a rape. Love you bro, stay safe!
