Very nice! I’m from Kolkata/US and I was watching an Axomiya cooking channel recently. I thought it would be like when I watch Hindi cooking videos: listen for the names of spices and watch what they do, because I can’t speak/read Hindi/Devanagari. But during the video, I gradually starting to understand Axomiya, and it was so exciting! Once I figured out the differences with Bangla, I could read the comments below pretty well too. All it took was 20 minutes of listening to someone describing a familiar activity. I don’t presume that fully learning Axomiya is trivial for Bangla speakers! But WB families, schools, & media could do more to promote conversational understanding of Axomiya. Instead I feel like it was hidden from us. That’s a shame, because being able to talk to your neighbors is good for society! My family said rude things about neighboring states, so the xenophobia runs deep I guess. I understand resisting Hindi imposition, but Axomiya takes nothing away from Bangla! Relatedly, if Bangla speakers made an effort, they could understand Rohingya more easily than others. I had no idea until I found the Rohingya language Wikipedia page. This year I sang an old Pakeezah song as a Lata Mangeshkar tribute, and I began appreciating Hindi/Urdu more, and seeking English-sub channels like this one. Six months later, I’m able to catch snippets of Farsi, like the Iran protest chant of “zaan, zindegi, azaadi.” I even managed to understand an Afghan woman’s interview on CNN without subtitles. No clue which Afghan language it was but I understood nonetheless. I felt so connected to humanity, and this is how it should be.

One thing i learned while living in a multi cultural state is that diversity always creates issues. Just see UP, Kashmir, Bengal, Assam and now manipur. People everywhere simply prefer their own brethren
Everyone segregates with their own. In my hostel we had Bengali, Assamese, Nepali, Bihari boys and everyone hanged around with their own groups, it seemed like nobody would try to befriend someone from other community just my observation
Everyone has right to speak in any language. No body has right to impose any language on us

I love learning languages, I am multi linguistic since my childhood. As I am Bengali from Assam, so I know Bengali and Assamese and learnt English and Hindi in school. So for graduation I went to Tamil Nadu, there I learnt to speak Tamil and mingled with Orissa friends, learnt Oriya. Have been in Punjab for job, learnt Punjabi.. Nowadays I am learning German.
Basically I know Bengali,Hindi,Assamese, English, Odiya,Tamil, Punjabi and German.
For me learning languages is very important, where you can mingle with the localities.
So, learn as much as languages you can.
This is what I can say
