As a Maharashtrian, I agree that there is an impact of migration. It’s due to flawed policies of the politicians of Bihar state. Apart from south India, even in Maharashtra, Hindi is seen the way it is seen in south India, though the scale is not that much. We always thought that Hindi is from the Hindi belt and is ruining local language and culture. Little did I know that infact Hindi ruined other language of this Hindi belt! Thanks for another informative video mohak!

As a Maharashtrian you should know there is difference between your own Marathi language and some dialect is considered as "pure" and others are mocked upon. You should also know how the Pune centred state board has been slowly killing the other "ashudda" dialects from Vidarbha and Marathwada and enforcing their own version of Marathi in these parts.

I grew up in Maharashtra , Mumbai I faced a discrimination and harrsment by Marathi people . Unlike other country trade capital Mumbai is stucked in state politics of Maharashtra . As Mumbai has much higher Hdi , unfortunately a politician from Mumbai have to talk about Marathi farmers , instead doing metropolitan politics . Maharashtra steals the taxes of Mumbai and didn't invested it back . Mumbai is special economy region , but not self administered or full state like Shanghai , Newyork , Tokyo, etc . I asked this question to former IAS officer Jagannath murty , he told Mumbai or BMC , has it own tax collecting system , etc . But further decentralisation of special region , is needed as Mumbai need a special administrative region , not just special economy region by Central government . He too told me output and input of taxes , etc are rigid in Mumbai , compare to that of Shanghai , Newyork , Tokyo . He told me that Mumbai give more taxes to Maharashtra and get lesser taxes back , inshort Mumbai is trapped in politics .

Vidyapati, Rabindranath Tagore all composed in Maithili language. But see how the tables have turned, time and fate played a cruel joke on Bihar. No, Kannadigas may be facing a lot of challenges. But even Kannadigas impose their language on others. In Karnataka, Kannadigas are not the only natives. In the coastal regions and in Coorg, Tulu and Kodava Takk are spoken respectively. They accept Kannada as the language of the state since they are comfortable with it. But they have their own regional identity. And that has to be respected in every state not just in the country.

The South Indians, unlike Marathis, Gujarathis and Punjabis, didnot allow Hindi to overwhelm their languages. All the South Indian states have vibrant film industries. There is a saying about Tamils, "You can take a Tamil out of Tamil Nadu but you can never take the Tamil out of him. The Tamil in him dies only when he dies". There are third and fourth generation Tamils in Malaysia, Singapore and Lanka who are bilingual /trilingual but speak only Tamil at home. If you are ready to discard your mother tongue and embrace Hindi, it is only a matter of time before it becomes your child's and grandchild's mother tongue. Biharis, Punjabis, Marathis and Gujarathis are themselves to blamed for facilitating the slow but sure death of their own languages. The Hindi zealots have already included these areas as part of the Greater Hindi Belt.

Once I was talking to my mom in magahi language. The women beside me (A bihari) looked at me as if I am some illiterate. This needs to change. Actually Hindi is damaging whole north indian languages. Hindi/Urdu was not universal like nowadays. It was just language around Delhi(west up, east haryana, south uttarakhand). Rajasthan had Marwari, Malwi, Bhili, up had Awadhi, Bundeli, Braj Bhasha, etc, Bihar had Maithili, Bhojpuri. Mumbai had Konkani. Chhattisgarh had Chhattisgarhi and Gondi. Uttarakhand-hp had numerous languages. Rawalpindi-Islamabad had Punjabi. Karachi had Sindhi. But nowadays most of these regions has become Hindi/Urdu. English is the link language in the south for students and other professions to communicate with other states, As each state has different language. We learn a language based on its USE/Value it provides for business etc.
If you see Though South has different languages it is far developed, less population, high literacy compared to North states. ITs important to know that India is a union of Linguistic states. Making Hindi National language would be an imposition of Lang on other non hindi speaking states and such decisions/legislation will be nullified by the Hon'ble Supreme Court. I still remember how sad I felt when few years ago I came to know that my ancetral language was Bajjika and being a third generation migrant bihari, I had no idea how to speak it, neither did anyone in my family new of such a language. People in my family have a vague idea of 'bhojpuri' being the mother tongue of all bihari, (thanks to popular Bollywood stereotypes). I've had the fortunate experience of visiting my ancestral village only once in my life and I found that even there people were not aware that there language was called Bajjika, which carries the great cultural heritage of being the language of the Lichhavi Republic. The decent of the language in which Mahavira spoke, the language in which Amrapali spoke, the language of the Gupta queen.
There is great cultural stigma associated with speaking the native languages of bihar. Primarily because of two reasons 1) these languages being classified as a 'dialect' of hindi, hence people think that they are basically speaking bad hindi. 2) the popular stereotyping of these languages as being spoken by uneducated uncultured people. That is the reason why migrant Biharis never want their children to speak these languages and hence hindi has replaced these languages even at home, of all migrant bihari families and even in Bihar itself people prefer to talk among each other's in Hindi to show that they are educated.
The only region that has maintained some linguistic conciousness is Mithila. All the folk songs that are sung during marriages, birth rituals, pujas, etc are rapidly getting lost. My grandmother was the last one who remembered some of these folk songs, and used to sing them during pujas alone. Now no one does.
Bihar itself does not recognize these languages as official language of the state. Even big politicians never give their speeches in the local languages. And biharis are not realizing the kind of cultural and linguistic devastation that they are doing to themselves. This devastation is almost complete in all "educated" migrant families and it is at its peak in Bihari homes itself, radiating from urban centers to villages now.

But unjudicially bhojpuri is termed as a dialect of hindi to increase the number of native hindi speakers in census. Consequently Hindi comes to be seen as the language of the educated and other languages remain used only among the less educated and rural folks. I am an Angika speaker. Well, I have been away from my home for quite a few years. I miss my mother tongue and its sweetness. From what I remember, It had been taboo for school-going children to speak the local language. Today we lack its literature and cultural identity. Nevertheless, I believe in its restoration. I talk to my relatives in this novel language. As a researcher, I am trying to contribute to the research field of the language ( building machine translation from English to Angika and Bhojpuri). Jai Bihar

Can you suggest me how to do it? Can you suggest me songs, films, literary works in Angika? If you have any suggestions please let me know.

As a bihari myself, I have seen many people from Bihar who are ashamed of talking in their native languages or even from being called bihari, specifically those who have Migrated and settled elsewhere... It's quite deterring that the bihar which once used to be the educational hub of world is now struggling with its own identity

the loss of native language does not only apply to Bihari. We can say that rise of Hindi have led to decline of many languages/dialects in India. In Uttarakhand the younger generation does not speak the native dialects i.e Garhwali and Kumauni. My own mother tongue is Nepali, I do speak fluent Nepali but the newer generation does not do so. They all speak in Hindi only. Slowly other languages are dying. And we need to act on it asap.

If u dodn't know please Google it.) with my friends in my school dress. And I was getting late to go home, so I called my father and talked in Angika (Mother tongue) that I will come home late.
At the same time I found that some people standing on the street were looking at me with Inferior sence. I think they thinks that how a English Medium School boy talk in Angika [such a low grade language (in their POV)].
