    The wayfinding of the R211s is chef's kiss! Not only are open gangways great for accommodating more passengers, improving crowd flow, and promoting accessibility by making it easier for passengers with disabilities or mobility challenges to move freely within the train (on top of the wheelchair flip seats), but in NYC's case, it prevents subway surfing by eliminating the ability to ride between cars! Open gangway trains provide a continuous line of sight throughout the entire train, which can deter criminal activity and improve passenger safety. It also allows for better monitoring and faster response to incidents or emergencies. Open gangways on the NYC Subway are a huge achievement and were much needed!

      I hope for the R262s the MTA goes for an all open gangway fleet and if there is a chance does the same on the states island railway

    You're right about soft shells , they can be dangerous in case of a sharp turn somebody can be crushed. I don't know well Nyc subway but if I remember there are some . Somebody was injuried on a tramway here in geneva with those shells . But those trains look wonderful , Mta did a great job buying these

      Yeah I think you’re right about their limited turn ability, but I don’t see it as a danger. Seems to me the potential vandalism hazards of soft shells are not worth the extra shoulder space.

      @@SuprToeHi GoGosuprtoe I know you’re not interested in the soft shell but it’s not so bad besides I do prefer the soft shell design and many people like it because there’s more room more grab pull’s for people to stand there and it’s more aesthetic pleasing because the hard shell has less space and are not intended for people to stand there but to only use them to walk between the cars and I am sure bad guys won’t do anything to the soft shell it least I hope not but while I do prefer the soft shell I think both design are good and if we do order more R211T Open gangway trains in the future I would also be happy with either design Although I do feel like it should be the soft shell design

    I’m glad that the MTA is *finally* introducing open-gangway models. However, it kinda upsets me that it can’t run express via Central Park & Fulton Street considering they get extremely crowded & the fact that many delays/reroutes occur along the A/C causing them to run express. But overall, I like them

    • @philsam123

    • @djijspeakerguy4628
      @djijspeakerguy4628 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@philsam123I think it’s the way the safety brakes work on the NYC subway, and the position of the express tracks in the center between the other tracks. It would be impossible to check the brakes if they activated. Either that or they’re just testing them on local tracks first before they get confident enough to move them to express, or a combination of both issues.

    • @patsycanete7072
      @patsycanete7072 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      R211Ts will never be express. I wrote about this train in my school newspaper. Hypothetically, if an R211T’s emergency brakes were to be activated on an express track, it wouldn’t be possible to cross to the other side. On some exp tracks, it is unsafe for R211Ts there. If a train WITHOUT open gangways like an R179, malfunctioned on a exp track, the procedure would be to climb through the space between cars or the last resort is to crawl under the train. Sadly, with the open gangways, there just isn’t a way an R211T will run express. Also MTA president Richard Davey made a decision to “give our C train customers a little love.”

    I remember my first time taking a 211, it was so amazing because I remember it being around a week or so after they got put into service. The only thing I have to say is that although there are a lot of things that are different / have shown advances compared to the r179's, it didn't really feel that different riding it to me. A lot of people have said it is a lot smoother but I couldn't really tell. Maybe it was the fact that I only took it 2 stops down or was too excited about the fact that I was on it to notice. But other than that besides me riding it for the first time, my parent recently started training to operate them.

    Didn’t notice the difference between soft/hard shells! It would be nice to have those in boston, the best we get is the connection between the halfs of Green Line trolleys and walking between CR coaches

    • @risksrewardsrelics51
      @risksrewardsrelics51 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Green Line is getting the Type 10 cars which are longer and comprised of 7 articulated sections. The infrastructure in Boston is pretty unique due to its age… lots of sharp curves which prevent the use of open gangway trains. The only heavy rail line that could possibly run them is the orange line. If the red/blue connector ever gets built and the Bowdoin loop is eliminated, then the blue line could possibly run them as well.

Too bad that there are only two open gangway trains at the moment but hopefully more will arrive and that they become the standard subway cars. Was there no way that every single car can be open gangway? Seems strange that you have to get off the train just to switch from hard shell to soft shell and vice versa. They can, except it would involve a lot of work with the shops/lifts prior doing so. Toronto has 6 car trains (75 ft cars) that are connected and the total length of their trains is 450 ft. Hong Kong uses longer cars that are connected as well. So figuring a 10 car train in NYC with cars being 60 ft each would create a train length of 600 ft, it should be doable.
