  • The NYC Subway is home to many a shopping center, but these are now 75% vacant as businesses flee and stores shut down. Some blame remote work and online shopping for the demise of NYC's subway malls, but perhaps there's another reason...

That is the same problem we have in California. I grew up in NYC and moved to California 22 years ago. Both NYC and California are a F***ing DUMP due to no prosecution and rampant theft. You can steal $1000 bucks worth of stuff in California and the system WILL NOT prosecute. After 22 years, we too are now leaving California. San Francisco is a Dump and many big retail and small business have left. I have just one and one question....Where the hell does our tax dollars go, oh wait let me see....to other countries and politicians pockets. I am sick, sick, sick and extremely tired of it.

My ancestors arrived in San Francisco from Germany in the late 1880s. All was lovely - I lived and worked there in the 1960s. That might explain why some stores are getting robbed multiple times per day, but the statistics show that crime is "down." Same with car smash-and-grabs, bag snatching, and so on. I mean New York City has been extremely diverse for multiple decades. Seems to me like the root of this issue has more to do with the people in charge at the municipal and federal level than anything else. Other than that, I generally agree with your sentiment.
Edit: In the year 2000, merely 34% of the NYC population were white. My grandfather, who fought for Nazi Germany in WWII, was wounded in combat and taken as a POW, was less racist than many people commenting on this thread. And I am saying this as a conservative white male.

Now I am fully remote, but the few times I went into 30R post pandemic had me really questioning if we had slipped into an alternate reality. The city, the vibe, the atmosphere, the people, everything is night and day from what it was in just a matter of a couple years. A hollow shell of what once was. I jokingly call it the “upside down” for those who get the reference. It’s just frustrating trying to figure out why they want it like this, because it didn’t have to be this way, it really didn’t.
