Where I live in Brisbane, Australia, they recently implemented 50 cent fares, which you can use on trains, buses, trams and ferries. It doesn’t matter where you go, it’s a flat 50 cents, the government subsidising the rest. It’s had a measurable impact on both ridership and traffic, climbing past pre-covid levels.

Right like how do they make more than the salary of our president? And okay they could save that 700 million if people didn’t evade. Would they spend it on things we need? Would they spend it to make the investments in intrastate that are needed? Of course not. If they want ridership to go up reduce the cost of fare back to $2.

That's the public transit issue where I live. Addicts and homeless have been using the public transit without paying. So you get on transit and you're sitting next to a puddle of urine, with people smoking fentanyl or shooting up openly, arguing, fighting making it dangerous and unsanitary for paying customers. So many customers have decided if the trouble makers ruin their ride and don't pay why should they also pay for such bad service. Nobody wants to subsidize the riders who make it miserable for all. So, many people have stopped paying because transit needs a wake up call about why regular people don't want to pay anymore for unsafe service.

The defund the police movement was never about fully defunding the Police, it was about moving money from over funded police budgets to things like mental health services so that the cops aren't being asked to deal with things they aren't trained for and the money can be used to deal with the sources of problems rather than to hammer any nail that sticks up.

New Yorkers are fed up! The city is overrun with filth, homeless individuals occupying train seats, and criminals endangering people on public transit. Safety feels nonexistent, and prices keep rising not only for transportation but for rent as well. Despite the MTA’s claims of improvements, services continue to slow down, with constant delays and nothing running on time. Given that New Yorkers pay higher taxes than any other state residents, transportation should be free!
Then why do you keep voting for Democrats??? You idiots voted for AOC AGAIN. Why??? NYC voted for Harris . Why??? Voting the same way and expecting different results is insanity.
The state of New York could use a police agency similar to how the British Transport Police police railways across Wales, England and Scotland. The BTP has policed rail systems, such as the London Underground, from 1949, and would take pressure off the NYPD which could instead focus on crimes elsewhere in the city. There are other issues that have led to a violent crime wave in NYC's subway system but those will also take quite some time to get under control.
It sounds crazy but I'll give you a two examples, this doesn't encompass everyone who evades but some of these people should be fined at the very least. 1. Person reeks of weed evades fare. If you can afford a pre-roll you can afford at least a round trip. 2. Person has the newest iPhone and the smart watch and a fresh pair of Nike's is also a fare evader. Making exceptions for grade schoolers (up to 12th grade) because the vast majority have student passes; I've seen every color and age for the above two situation. The media/activists/government wants to make out that only poors are evading fares which is absolutely not the case.
@@mrroboto8671 Give them a ticket, don't jail people over 2.90$ lol. Here the ticket is roughly the same price, if you dodge and get caught you must pay 60$, you are not checked in the entrance but on the train. If you don't have the money with you the fine comes to your home address... If you don't pay it and are caught riding with an open fine you are deducted a higher fine directly from your wages as they have access to your job data. For self-employed people it's trickier, but the charge is often done with your medical insurance. 97% of people are either employed under the formal ecomomy or medically insured with public companies or companies that colaborate with the district in this way. If you can't even afford medical insurance then I don't care if you dodge a fare, you're probably struggling. You could argue "what if you don't have a home address for them to send the fine to" that would be homeless people, they're struggling in a way I couldn't even imagine, if they dodge I don't give a s***. That's a way better solution than putting people in jail for a first offence of DODGING 2.90$, that's insane.
Have you seen the transit system in Japan? It is clean and safe. They demand people behave honorably and they deal with those that do not. That will solve this problem overnight.
Yes, I've ridden the subways in Japan and if they were any cleaner you could perform open heart surgery in them. The criminal, cultural element in NYC is thanks to democrats. While far from perfect it was much better under Rudy.
@@bodarkghost1864 Japan does have immigrants. However, like Poland, Hungary and a few lesser known, small countries, Japan thoroughly vets and pretty much only accept higher educated people. As pre-stroke Giuliani used to say, “Take care of the small things and the big things take care of themselves”. Meaning enforcing the small crimes helps enforce the large crimes. One of the first things he did was to enforce jaywalking. Now they’ve eliminated penalties for jaywalking in NYC. Giuliani cleaned up NYC, just in time for 9/11, it would have been a mess if he hadn’t. Now NYC is falling apart again.

We already pay for literally everything, and an extra tax on a public system everyone already pays for is criminal. I see life as the early days of Hollywood specifically the 70s-90s. The movies we love, Beetlejuice, Star Wars, Home Alone, Jurassic Park, etc, they were made on "shit" budgets and some almost didn't get made at all. The movie makers had to really use their money wisely and look at what they made! Now look at all the prequels/sequels/reimaginings that have millions upon billions of unlimited dollars and influence behind them and they either lose money or they don't hit right with audiences like the originals did. Give too much power and money and corruption and a lowering of standards happens. I mean look at Kamala, she is now in debt after getting more money and celeb influencers than trump on the campaign trail. Imagine what she would have done to further destroy our economy
i ain't paying 2.90 for a train that's late, breaking down or there's a crazy guy on it trying to sell me something that's definitelly not good or even "safe" drugs. the only way to increase profits is to cheap down the fares, people wouldn't complain if it was a crappy old dirty system, but cheap.
Reducing fares is a good idea but that must be matched with zero tolerance for fare evasion, zero tolerance for crime or misbehavior. Include the riders in enforcement and also have lots of volunteers involved including help clean up all the stations. You can put in fare gates that makes it much more difficult to fare evade instead of those ridiculous turnstiles built for "high trust" societies. I know the unions will oppose much of this but f..k them. Let them sue.
Law and order and punishing criminals is 'racist'. That's their mindset. They'll never accept that the criminal demographics are accurate and exist that way for a reason other than 'racism'.
Exactly....our justice system is completely cooked. Arresting people doesn't magically make all the problems go away because we have laws in any of the 50 states that give people rights even in jail that creates additional expense which is passed off onto all of us. Last time I heard about the stats...it was something like 50k a year to have someone in prison....somebody will be coughing that dough up and it won't be the wealthy lol.
The MTA is a sh*thole entity. Bus drivers in NYC earn over 70K a year *_plus_* over time. The buses are filthy and rarely if ever cleaned. Trains are cleaner and more frequent, but SAFETY is a big problem on them. The MTA could have bottomless funds and they'll *_never_* get it right because they are corrupt. They don't understand that $200 mil for cops, only $100,000 paid back in tickets, and fare evasion reduced by $400 mil is a net positive
They'd have to increase the quality across the board Because at that point it's not worth paying for most people Even applying for "fair fares" is a shitty process lol

The next question is: how much of the NYC subway system's massive $20 billion budget is wasted on bureaucratic and managerial bloat? Could they not remove some of the managers and admins and reallocate those funds to service improvements and better fare enforcement?
Wrong. They have no money because they refuse to get a job because the government gives them everything. People will always take the easiest way. 95% are there by choice and you pay for it.
BULL. I work at an ER...i have seen coworkers get on the bus, act like they broke. This is not a money situation...this is countless ppl getting free rides because they can get away with it and don't care about the consequences like less service
Nah people by nature want to get things for free. This is why coupon is so appealing because it lowers the price of shipping fee and service. Even for people who is well off uses coupons because like I said its cheaper. So if you can evade paying train fair others will also follow.
Invest my ass. The train's infrastructure is 100 years old and MTA makes 6.8 billion annually. Where's all the money going? And you can't argue that it isn't enough to rebuild the infrastructure from scratch either because Japan built one from scratch with 1.8 billion while dealing with Tokyo on top of it. Note that Tokyo is way bigger than NYC and contains way more people. (Tokyo is the biggest city in the world)
I appreciate that you've pivoted from real estate to current events in NYC. We need to know about these kinds of things and the news doesn't talk enough about it.

We shouldn't have to pay for a subway system that is unsanitary and doesn't respect the safety of its commuters.

The subway receives 20B a year for maintenance, and you argue that 700M in missing fares makes all the difference.
What a jokester. What a clown.
The city imported the 3rd world. This was to be expected in the long term.
Then why do you keep voting for Democrats???
You idiots voted for AOC AGAIN. Why???

The state of New York could use a police agency similar to how the British Transport Police police railways across Wales, England and Scotland. The BTP has policed rail systems, such as the London Underground, from 1949, and would take pressure off the NYPD which could instead focus on crimes elsewhere in the city. There are other issues that have led to a violent crime wave in NYC's subway system but those will also take quite some time to get under control.

Being jailed over $2.90 is crazy
Why?
$2.90 is what’s crazy.

Give too much power and money and corruption and a lowering of standards happens. the only way to increase profits is to cheap down the fares, people wouldn't complain if it was a crappy old dirty system, but cheap.
