    It's amazing that Hermont camouflaged his flat, slice and kick pretty well. Without knowing beforehand, you couldn't really tell from his ball toss what kind of serve would come next. Maybe the kick toss was a tad more to his left, but they all had some sort of arch in that direction.

    • @dps0610

      That’s what impresses me about Kygrios’s serve. His toss is so damn consistent and he can hit all three from neutral.

    One huge factor is the player knows beforehand it’s going to be a kick serve out wide. It’s way harder to return it during an actual game when you don’t know what kind of serve is coming.

    Two of the guys that I used to play with had 120 MPH serves. Both were 6' 5". One owned a construction company and worked construction with his employees. He also had a monster of a kick serve where you have to get the racquet above your shoulders to return it unless you tried to cut it off. One other guy I play regularly had a 110 MPH serve but he's in his 70s now. He's a former D3 player. My feelings on returning these serves is that you have to have some idea as to where it's going unless it's coming right at you. So you guess. If you guess wrong, then you lose the point. But you'll lose it anyways if you don't guess. The other guy was a competitive junior that went to college though I think that he wound up playing basketball. There's a video like this except with Roddick serving. With Roddick serving, it's more important

  • @Jon88

    Saw the GQ challenge vid with Rick Macci, nice to see it recreated. What I got from that video is (tennis armchair video watchers are annoying) and it’s really hard to tell how fast a serve is with the naked eye. Hermont’s serves were def pretty big though.
    I thought Rick did give good tips to the guy so he could have the highest success.

    • @bigrobsydney

      Not sure. I'd estimated the flat first serves at somewhere around 95 mph. They didnt hit the back fence as high up as I would have expected 100 mph serves to do so.

    Just goes to show how important the "split-step"
    is when returning; specifically in this instance; serves.
    Them being relatively beginners;
    being "flat-footed" gives them a slim chance, to none.

    • @LoosSerine
      @LoosSerine ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always split step a fraction too late, I think the point the ball is about to be hit is when right? Or is it when the ball leaves the hand.

    • @RonnieJamesOsbourne

      At contact is when you should be just coming down from your split, which allows you to pounce in the direction that's needed.

    • @LoosSerine
      @LoosSerine ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RonnieJamesOsbourne Ok I'll work on timing it, thanks. I always find when I do it I'm a little late. I see some pros who hop before rather than just one split step. Would that be advisable if you can't time it perfectly

    • @RonnieJamesOsbourne
      @RonnieJamesOsbourne ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@LoosSerine It's preference.
      Djokovic does like a horse stance (martial Arts) (wide stance) and then there's players like Nishikori/Murray, that do a side stance into a split, which gives them forward momentum. I believe Wawrinka does a combo of small horse stance into a few bounces into a split step...just practice several and find your prefrence.
      I believe 2 minute tennis just did a video on split step timing that may help you as well.

      @Tommie22x ปีที่แล้ว

      technically yes. its just requires you to still cut the ball on the side but you rotate your trunk and shoulder less then if u would to serve out wide on the deuce side. essentially u would have to serve the ball out and let the spin bring the ball into the t. just lower margin for error. otherwise the balls kinda in no mans land near the t but sitting into the opponents (righthanded forehand)

      @@Tommie22x I will have to check the video again. A deuce wide slice will curve away from the returner's forehand.A deuce T slice should curve INTO the returner's body. But it seemed like the deuce T slice just bounced straight ahead. It looked just like a flat serve down the T.

    I like the concept of the video but I feel like to be fair, the D1 player has to hit the same serve during each round because during some of the "Flat serve" round he hit a slice out wide and vice versa during the slice rd. If returning deuce court then flat serve she always be T or body and slice should be body or out wide to be more fair to the beginners.
