  • Hi everyone! This week we're back at the 1960 Plymouth Fury project, with even more splices this time, even though it is just some wiring in this case! Agent 223 stops in to help on the Citroen DS project (more soon!), and Agent 0842 is on hand to help with the assembly on the Plymouth...
    We'll also fab up a few more panels for the boogie van project, and try our luck with the planishing hammer to sort out some more stainless for the Plymouth.
    . Thanks also to everyone who subscribed to our channel here, and thanks also for all of your "likes" and comments! We do appreciate that anyone would take the time to leave us a note. If you would like to help keep our channel going, you can get a sticker, hat or a coffee mug at:

      Here in Ontario it's been nice we are having 50 degree days about a week and a couple days it was up to damn near 60 degrees we had a night were it snowed a little bit but it was melted by morning but it's all green grass and spring days for the most part here but everyone is on lockdown so it really sucks to have these nice days and can't really enjoy it. Right now it's Saturday March 28 at 3:20pm and it's 49 degree F out

    You know when I first started watching this channel I thought it was just a bunch of stoners dragging junk cars around. Now I realize I have been watching a master craftsman who puts far more effort and skill into the smallest parts than many body men put into every car they’ve ever done. I have learned tons from watching , including that there is nothing that can’t be saved or re fabricated with a little effort! Keep up the awesome work

    Beautiful piece of work! You have re-captured the beautiful sculpture of the late '50's FORWARD LOOK! Too bad the quality of those cars had trouble starting in '58. But after watching you with all the pieces,its hard to imagine an assembly line that could adequately keep up on the cars in a careful way. Like PAUL HARVEY used to say "Now you know the rest of the story!" Well
    You and your Buds have done a terrific job at bringing back life to a classic-looking better than she ever did.
    I love your shop by the way. Do the project and clean another time. I do the same thing and do not have the OCD that others might about "clean" The shop is a tool and should be maintained but not the focus. Rub on the head to Frankers-sweet dog! Thanks for sharing! Rich

    That old polisher really turns some RPM's. That stainless is coming out better than factory. More of the results of your magic. And you don't do shortcuts, not on what basically has become a full restoration. That Fury is going to be gorgeous. I am also glad your big Newport is a driver. I have always been a fan of those fuselage body Chryslers.

    My favorite part of a build like this is the trim and finishing touches. It makes me think about the assembly line and the workers having to do this many times a day. I have a 1963 Fury and she has a lot of chrome pieces, but not as many as this car.

  • @glennnickerson8438
    @glennnickerson8438 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    Whenever I restore a car, I think back to the guys on the assembly line and wonder if they ever thought about whatever became of the cars they put together. Some probably just put in their time and couldn't care less. But I hope a few did care and took pride in what they did. The end result of the restoration of the Fury is a great tribute to those who took pride in the job they did and hope you have a sense of satisfaction Scott for going the distance!

    • @kimchipig
      @kimchipig 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I wish this were true. By 1960, Chrysler was decently reliable (for the time) but the 1957-58 cars had enormous quality problem. By ten years, they were all gone. I have been in the car scene for 50 years and my dad ran a large shop. Car from this era were quality disastesr and unsafe. I 383 Newport had 9" drum brakes. All that brightwork cost a lot of money and it was recovered in other ways-like body structure.

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@kimchipig In most things, especially consumer items, quality has fallen off a cliff. Cars are somewhat an exception and it really depends on what you mean by quality. You pay out the nose for it. The price of cars has gone up more than 10 times. Most are nowhere near as serviceable as they once were. Back then nobody would have ever built a car where you have to take out the seats to change the battery or have to remove half the front end to replace a water pump.

    • @glennnickerson8438
      @glennnickerson8438 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It seems that there is always highs and lows when it comes to manufacturing quality. The newest car I own is 20 yrs old and my oldest is 74! That's why I love this channel so much. Drive something you can fix yourself and have fun doing it. Thank you Scott for giving people like us a refuge who realize the smart thing is not to buy new and have something that is a rotted out piece of junk before the payments are done.

    • @beyondrepair8949
      @beyondrepair8949 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Quality is a squishy term. It can mean several things to different people. Cars today are all "plastic crap" but they all will go a minimum of 100k and don't rust out as easily and are way safer. Who needs a tune up every 5k miles anymore? Who has to replace tires every 10k anymore? Back when they introduced the first 20k radial tire, no one believed it could do 20k. Prices were lower in the 50s but adjusting for inflation (multiply 1950 price x 10 for 2019 price), not all that much. Styling? well, no comparison there.

    • @hotpuppy1
      @hotpuppy1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I worked assembly line at Mitsubishi in Normal, Illinois for 18 years. For the most part you didn't think about the cars going by too much--no time. You just grabbed your parts and crammed them on as fast as possible, hoping nothing went wrong to put you behind because it might take you the better part of a half hour to get caught back up. They just keep coming at you. Our line was fairly slow at 55 seconds per car. Big Three line speeds were about twice as fast.

    Elizabeth's Coronation looked like an impulse, compared with what you Boys have build.
    I have said it before and will say it again, Scotts "body-work", is the finest I have ever seen in my long automotive lifespan. I really can't find the right words ,he is the "Master".

    Good trade off, clean a grille in exchange for two van parts. I can see the difference of the respray now, was a good decision. The magazine article is beyond cool.

    It really pays to call in the big gun polishing unit for the miles of trim on the Fury. So nice to see it all coming together.
    Liking the new sweater too - has a real Canucks vs. Habs vibe going on. Cheers from the coast.

      Yes. And the fact that the trim pieces fit is testimony to the exceedingly high quality of the re-manufacturing work that was done to rebulid destroyed pieces. I remember when those pieces that extend over the headlamps were nothing but huge rust holes.

      @@classicreaction5340 Too late: Christine was a '59. ('59 was the year for the largest, most extravagant, and probably the most ridiculous tail fins Detroit ever produced. I must admit that the '59 Caddy's fins were huge, but they made a statement that was ostentatious rather than ludicrous.)

    • @plastiksurgeon9129
      @plastiksurgeon9129 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bill Brockmann
      Christine was actually a ‘58.....’59’s had those blades like fins with those somewhat oval taillights at the bottom. In a sense, the ‘60 IMO is a bit flashier than the ‘57-‘59’s as the styling “evolved”, but it was a bit too late for Chrysler as others were de-emphasizing tailfins. The ‘61 was a REALLY weIrd design as Virgil Exner decided to put a tiny fin right smack in the middle of the deck lid on the Fury’s.
      I don’t know what that guy was smokin’, but notice how very quickly after that, the designs came “back down to earth”. 👌🏻

    I've really enjoyed watching this car go back together like a big jigsaw puzzle, especially the satisfying moment where you popped the long piece of stainless in between those two end bits below the grille after a minute of working it in.
    It often seems those early sixties Plym's are the forgotten mopars. Hard to believe how people can overlook them, when the '60, with its last hoorah of the tailfin and dramatic eye catching lines is such an out of this world beauty. Cheers from N.Z!

    Glad you managed to secure a copy of Classic American.with the Frazer in it.
    Watching the effort required to restore all the tiny pieces on a car like this really puts into perspective those bullshit shows where they build a hot rod in the ten days before a deadline at a car show...
