Xander, what a great video in so many ways! Your survival skills and attitude are excellent! The video and scenery is off the charts. Lastly and most importantly thank you for so openly sharing your addiction challenges and blessing of recovery. You are clearly helping a lot of people to find the courage to address their issues and change their lives in a positive way. I have been blessed with and very involved in the AA Program for a long time. I again commend you for your honesty and the hope that you provide others. Keep on being you as you are an excellent human being who brings a lot to our crazy world! May God bless you with continued Sobriety and happiness a day at a time. 🙏 👍 😇

Tips from one spearfisherman to another:
Try to study a bit from marine life, which fish a safe to eat and which are not. After some research from the internet, I can say you got lucky when you failed to spearfish that black fish because of your dull spear and too far shot. It happens to be a clown triggerfish, which is apparently dangerous to eat.
The other tip is to always load your speargun only in the water. It's a lot safer when the water creates resistance if something snaps, like your rubber band cord at the beginning.
Anyways, you did incredibly great out there! Perfect mindset of taking a step back and trying to be safe with things you don't know. You just earned a sub :)

I'd add to just stay away from all trigger fish in these remote areas. They all contain the toxin ciguatera but the clown trigger has too much to eat, as you pointed out. It's not fatal, but it can make you sick even in small doses from the other species. If you catch a trigger fish at home, at least you could treat your nausea and other symptoms, but on a survival journey it could put a person in serious jeopardy. I wonder if that is why he got sick as opposed to the micro plastics. Perhaps a safe rule may be to steer clear of all colorful fish. Here in the Gulf in Florida I don't even bother with trigger fish, they don't taste good to me. Also, I don't know if you saw it, but there was some tasty kelp around there he could have eaten too.

When you’ve been through a terrible addiction like it sounds he did, as did I, most things don’t ever seem near as bad in comparison. Once you get your stuff straight and have hope again, it all seems like icing on the cake. The trick is to keep the attitude. Us humans easily forget important lessons lol.

At the end of the day, majority of people forget how lucky and grateful they should be to experience something. I forget the exact timeframe but 1 hour and 30ish Xander says how grateful he is to experience this and be on an island. Bc u or me might never experience the true beauty of starving, sleep deprived, and then to be able to eat a fish and stare off into the ocean all by yourself on beautiful island. Truly grateful to be there and is only there bc of the career and success he has had to be there. Always be grateful for the moments bc you never know if it’s actually good or bad.

  • @Blaaww1
    @Blaaww1 หลายเดือนก่อน +143

Hawaiian here, something could’ve helped when u had the 5 prong is if u got a good amount of rope (maybe from the hammock that ripped) grabbed a stick and tie the string to the center of it to use it like a back stop. Wear it like a belt and everytime you poke a fish u slide the stick the thru the fishes gills and out the mouth and then it won’t slide off. Save you a ton of energy getting out and getting back in the water, don’t need to worry about flies or spoiling.
Also another tip that might help especially when u near the ocean is if you can find some type of bowl rock put some ocean water in there and put it in the sun and let it dry out to get salt. When you are in the sun and working / sweating it’s always good to put salt back in ur body. That’s why u might have a hydration issue cuz you have nothing that would hold the water you drinking. I think it would help.🤷‍♂️

Wakes up feeling depleted, has a rawback coconut water coffee and gets caffeinated. The power of caffeine is crazy when you are hungry and sleep deprived. It makes me think why a lot of people drink it after a solid 8 hours sleep with a full stomach, good job bro x

Xander, your journey is a profound reflection of the ceaseless beauty of existence. To see you gather rain, hunt for sustenance, and adapt with resilience amidst broken sleep was a reminder of how much life offers when stripped to its essentials. Your awe for the world around you-the way you found wonder in struggle and joy in simplicity-was deeply moving. You’ve shown that even in isolation, the world hums with life’s quiet miracles, if only we have the eyes and heart to see them.

@ I grew up in LA county, and while it offered more than it does today, I got out by enlisting in the Army. We moved to Idaho after I got out of the Army, but eventually started to feel kind of trapped in Idaho, so I moved on to Alaska. I am thankful for the opportunities I’ve had, but a lot of things would have never happened if I hadn’t taken some big leaps!

Hey Xander just wanted to say I really enjoy your content and hard work that you put into it every single time... I'm a recovering alcoholic/addict. This Thanksgiving I will be two years sober, and it just so happens that I stumbled on your channel at the beginning of my sober journey. I have pulled a lot of inspiration from you and your videos listening to you talk about your own struggles with addiction and sobriety. I want to thank you from he bottom of my heart for being so open and also for inspiring me to get back in to nature! This past year I've been camping and fishing nonstop and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Hopefully I'll be able to shake your hand someday and thank you in person... I think it would be an honor and a privilege to go on an adventure with you... Man how I have missed the woods throughout my struggle with addiction. Feels GREAT to be BACK!!!

Two of my favs as well. What sets them apart from others in this genre, is their editing, and content filming. With Xander, you are immediately connected to him. ( us older guys say things like “ we did much the same” or “ the kid is learning”.
And then you realize that while he is learning, and doing he is also giving us our youth, our experiences in real time and in video.
It truly is a credit to him that he gives us his version of our youth. Thanks for that.

This guy is still learning the ropes about making a rain proof shelter Also he had fishing line but never went line fishing, so what was the point of the line. Once it rained heavy and he got proper water he should have just drank the pure water. I think he limits what he does to just survive the 7 days , but if he was doing a few months he would set things up a lot better.
He does look too skinny to be doing these challenges though, maybe try to fatten up a bit prior to each challenge. Like they do on alone.

Pro tip for catching eels next time, take any small fish or crabs you catch and walk up the beach and chum the rocks at the shore right before it gets dark. Once it gets dark they will come out and you can literally walk the beach and spear them right from the sand. We used to do that all the time to catch eels for bait, but obviously you could eat them as well.

It's even scarier when tap water is safe to drink in the UK, but the conspiracies, as we might call them, are allegedly made up by bottled water companies. Every house I have been to drinks bottled water, disposing of 20-40 water bottles per month into the bin, while fresh water runs from the tap. I ask them, do you know what dirty water means? In some countries, there is standing water for months, sometimes larva-infested, and they still have to drink it to quench their thirst. Isn't it too much privilege?

I’m really enjoying this video. Never free based coffee crystals. But in 2011 I did a ‘round the US ‘car trip on unemployment benefits and my breakfast of choice was milk with chocolate protein powder and coffee crystals. ❤

Your ending was prefect, just where I wanted to see for you. You know, when your coconuts supply run out God sent you rain. So much that your cup overflowed. Praise Him! Xander, another wonderful cinematography adventure. Thank you so much for sharing your struggles, challenges, and successes. I so felt the Lord was with you throughout this solo survival challenge. God bless!

I enjoy your content. A few helpful hints. !. If you crack open a bottle of coconut water and it fizzes its been fermenting and I wouldn't advise anyone to drink it. When it has time to ferment you'd get one of the worst food poisoning. 2. You can make a scope for the coconut jelly from the coconut itself. 3. You can fashion a cot from the bush rope. That first fish you caught with the speargun is a bonito. Delish!

Genuine question, what makes it so bad in coconut water? I do fermentation stuff with fruits all the time, and as long as you do it correctly (don't expose to harmful bacteria in the very beginning) it seems like it's safe. Plus, if something goes horribly wrong, you kinda know it by the smell and taste of it.
People used to make light and quick beers historically to drink as one of the main sources of hydration. Fermentation was one of the main (alongside with boiling) methods of purifying water. Because when "good" bacterias take over, they don't allow bad bacteria to spread. So the main thing about fermentation is to ensure that there are more good yeasts and bacteria than bad ones.
Now getting back to topic, i'm just curious, if coconuts have harmful bacteria in them and make fermentation process dangerous? Maybe one day i'll try to make like coconut kombucha and i need to know, how to do it without poisoning myself 😅

You are awesome sir. The video was so raw, emotional, and was filmed in a way like we, your viewers, are right there with you. It was amazing how you survived. It was thought provoking for myself and a few friends about what IF this should ever happen. And I just want to say you made me spit out my water when you found the light bulb and make the joke about doing drugs as well as when you made the joke about forgetting to take off your shirt to show viewers your chest. Hilarious! Now... I need you to take longer than 30 days between extreme adventures like this so you can rest, recover, and enjoy life before you take on stuff like this. To lose 10 lbs and then go on another adventure without picking any of that weight back up only to probably lose another 10 lbs from this adventure. Again, thanks for taking us on the journey. I still have not made it past the thought of drinking back-wash from unknown people. Okay, I am done. Thanks again sir!
