Nice video. Suggestions from Fundy. Wait til 1/2hr or so ebb tide. Then power the boat straight in til it grounds. This minimizes "pounding" time while waiting to hard ground. Or,you can turn boat parallel to beach at last moment,& lay her down with deck listed toward shore. This will diminish pounding during rising tide, but you must drop anchor,(on the way in) to keep boat from being driven up the beach as it re-floats. You need water & a long & short handled coarse (fishboat)scrub brushes for bottom cleaning. When the tide drops to about 1ft or less depth, jump over with buckets & brushes.Dip brush in tide as long as you can & use filled buckets for rinse. Do maintenance, zincs, bottom paint-after tide leaves. Cheers/Len

good vid Sam. When I was a young fella like you I worked on a prawn trawler in the N.W. of Western Australia. We worked out of a place called Sam's Creek (yeah) and it had a big tide range. We were hung up there for weeks while the skipper and the owner wrangled over repairs. Every low tide we were over on our bilge. During the day that was o.k. we'd go visiting, but if it was night time we had to sleep part on the bunk and part on the hull. Tiresome. It went on for weeks. Cheers.

Sam. I know I’m way behind the curve (about 10 months behind) but just a day or two ago discovered your videos. I’ve enjoyed your adventures.
The first video I saw you were in NC. That caught my attention since I live in NC.Also you happened to install a Electric motor on your boat very smartly and on your own. You have done a lot of little improvements to the boat yourself with basic tools using whatever you can find. Not necessarily masterfully but efficiently and cheaply. Which is what I have had to do all my life so I totally understand and admire. And who doesn’t love a sailboat with Quiet power provided by the wind!

Great video! But I can't believe you traveled across an ocean and got within walking distance of Mont St Michel, and you didn't actually visit it and go inside! I loved it so much I've been twice, myself. St. Malo is great, though. My brother and I were visiting Le Grand Be when suddenly my brother said, "There's no more land left!" I was like, what are you talking about!? And he said "THERE'S NO MORE LAND LEFT!" and pointed to the tide rushing in! So we ran to what was now a shore, and we quickly took our shoes and socks off and hiked our pants legs up and ran through the rising water to get back to the mainland. Good times.

The danger in what you did is that there could be a rock that the hull comes to rest on and that could seriously damage the hull. You should aways survey the careening spot on the previous low tide and place a marker buoy so that you can be sure of a safe grounding.

@@dowser81 It was bouncing a little and there was no way knowing in advance that it wouldn't "bounce". Bouncing or not, the rock could easily pierce the hull or damage the rudder, propeller, prop shaft, etc. if in the wrong place. When refloating, you have zero control of how "bouncy" it is and the rock could, again, easily pierce the hull or cause other damage.

Sailor-men ashore : "Hmmm. Oh well, no swell today, so he either means to do this, or he isn't likely to come to harm . . . just a bit of embarrassment for 6 hours.".
60 years ago, my dad used to tell one of us kids to row out to yachts that came to anchor too deep into our home-bay, and ask if they were meaning to careen. :) Almost always they would smle and say "No, we are just going to cook some lunch and go before the tide drops".
A couple of times we got told "I know what I am doing, go away" then hours later you would see them get agitated suddenly and motor out, but the channel isn't marked, changes everytime there is a big Easterly wind, and is VERY windy . . . impromptu careening session.
One old bloke walked ashore from his quite substantial yacht laying on its side in the channel, went somewhere and came back with an old truck, and drove straight down the beach and bellied it out in the mud halfway out to his yacht. The whole bay turned out, got a tractor, and when he tried to tell them he didn't need us interfering the men told him to sit down and shut up, he wasn't going to pollute our beach when the tide came through his truck.
Dragged the truck ashore and he had gone and sat on his yacht, and when the tide came in and lifted it, he sailed away without his truck keys.
That was an absolute AMAZING sequence of events for a ten year old boy, I can still remember our glee as we watched him drive down off the beach, us kids were so excited to watch an adult be such a clown.

If you took a bit left of the castle, you will be able to get a boat closer. ❤
There are arial photos showing more depth in that location.
Thank you for this great, inspiring video. I want to start travelling again

i would pull the engine, re-trim with some extra lead bolted on the bottom of the keel, and scull that thing; with those new laminate sails.... i would just start stripping dead weight, and go to Speedcoat 49 and a 13 foot sculling oar......i mean it would never surf anyway, but your lighter air performance could eliminate the need for a motor....make a lead appendage, the trim factor of the engine, to fair out the prop aperture.

At 9min mark, you showed your prop. Something I recently heard from a surveyor was that the prop lock nut is the larger of the two. The reasoning is because the locking force is greater with more threads. The shorter nut is to push the prop onto the shaft. IOW, yours is backwards according to this.

I've seen this done even with cats. But , with a monphull with a large keel its absolutely amazing how much work you can do ! I've seen bottom paint done and everything. Definitely a great way to save money !

Cover for the autopilot, good idea, I have one. Leash, essential, annoying no eye to attach it to….maybe not good for return sales!

I thing you'll find galloping horse bit is the speed the incoming tide comes at you over the sand. So if you are walking the dried beach and you see the incoming water's edge coming towards you, its already too late. It happens wherever you get what you call a 'tidal plane'.
P.S. you should clean the barnacles off the prop, it would save you fuel/ add some speed.

First time I see someone "beaching" on the Mont Saint Michel Bay. I think it's unlawful.
But the point is beaching is OK when you enter a small bay where you can be sure that water will be flat and the boat doesn't hit bottom repeatedly. It's somewhat possible when you come in… but you're not sure what will be the sea state when you get out and things ca get really bumpy pretty fast on a bay that is very large… the more so that relying on charts is always taking a chance as the bottom at the Mont Saint Michel always changes, and you're not sure you'll be able to take the exact same route on your way out.
There are plenty small harbors around where you can lay against a quay for 6 hours without any issue and give a scrub to your hull. Look around, many people do it.
Anyway best of luck. I envy you !…

Haha, here in The Netherlands we do this too but usually with our traditional flat-bottomed ships without a keel. Sure sleeps a lot more comfortable 🤣 Must be a cool experience

Hi just came across your VLOG. I Love Mont St Michelle I spent my Honeymoon on the island way back in 1993. I use to fly out from UK to Jersey in the channel islands and also to French airfields in light aircraft as I had a PPL. There is a very famous airfield at Averanche it is also affected by the tide and floods so you have to watch them as part of your flight planning to arrive and take off from there. I also know from my many visits to this part of both France and the Channel islands that the sands around Mont St Michelle are very dangerous as there are a lot of Quick sand holes all over the place and it is a regular occurrence to see cars swallowed by the incoming tide where people ignore the locals advice

I once drove rental around my friends place a bit west of St. Malo, and saw a local guy digging out his Jeep from tidal sands. I joined him, we dug for an hour or so and got it out. He was driving his jeep to his boat, and was like 1/2 km off shore when he stuck. The guy was not concerned at all, saying he has 6 hours to get out (ok, he was speaking French and I English, so details may be missed :) )

The Bay of Biscay Can be Really Bad Sam. If you’re not stuck for time, following the Coast down keeping well away from the edge of the Continental Shelf just Offshore, down France, across Northern Spain then down the coast of Portugal is a really nice journey, with lots of places to dive into to shelter and wait for the weather window for the next leg. Great places along the way too. Safe Journey and Fair Winds. Bob in Wales. 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿⛵️🌟🌟🌟
