    In this review I take a look at Sony's fifth full frame E-mount lens, the 70-200mm f4 G series FE lens. It's a great match for the a7 series cameras but is also compatible with all of Sony's E-mount cameras like the a6000 and the a5000 cameras.

    I got this lens recently to shoot my son's swim meets with my a6000 and it rocks! Quite a difference from my 55-210 kit lens. Yes a 2.8 would be much nicer but for my needs the 4.0 is ideal. The sharpness is amazing and the bokeh is very nice! I love it! Great review!

    I have this lens with a Sony a6000 and have been very pleased with it. I find the f4 to be completely adequate for my needs. I agree. The photos are extremely sharp and the detail is amazing!

    I have this lens and use it with my vg900 and a6000. I rarely take the lens hood with me which is about 30% of its size. I fitted a UV filter for a little protection. The A6000 auto focus is blisteringly fast. Should have mentioned the G lock focus on subjects too, it's fantastic. Boken is awesome too.

    I have a a7 and I'm really thinking about getting this Lens but only a F4.0 :( Still looks like it gets an amazing job done plus not a lot of options yet from the E-mount family. I hope more will come.

    I wonder if this f4 will get an upgrade too… I was ready to buy it when the V2 of the 2.8 was announced so I stope my self. Since “winter is coming” I can wait for several month and see. What your thought on that?

  • @ClarkyAv
    @ClarkyAv 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    How would this compare to a lens like the Sigma 70-200 f:2.8? They're about the same price online, and I'm considering getting one of the two. Obviously there'll probably be a size difference, but what about image quality? Is the extra size worth it for the f:2.8? I already have the LAEA4 adapter so it's a pretty straight shootout for me. What do you think?

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Sony 70-200mm F4 is much better in terms of image quality and performance but it depends on what you shoot if for you to go with the F2.8 or F4. If you shoot a lot of low light photos then the Sigma would be the better option for you.

    • @ClarkyAv
      @ClarkyAv 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great to know - I like the form factor of the f4 much better. I'm not shooting too specialised low light stuff - mainly aerial and cars/friends, and it's on the A7s so I'm hoping that will help with LL. It's just the ability to really blur the background sometimes would be nice. But you reckon the f4 will be sharper overall than the Sigma? That will be the main thing for most applications.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Clarky Av Hands down it will sharper than the Sigma =.D

    • @oiboiii
      @oiboiii 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      vasilios dinis Just want to clarify something here - is there a point in using the sony A mount 70-200 F2.8 with the LA-EA4 as in theory the light that the adapter steals would bring the aperture up to an F4, which is then effectively equal to the E mount 70-200 F4?

    • @ClarkyAv
      @ClarkyAv 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The LA-EA4 takes about 1/3rd of a stop, so it would be closer to f/2.8

  • @GRJOHN360
    @GRJOHN360 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hello John! I want to pick one all around/travel lens up to this price. Do you think that 70-200 f4 would be the best choice for the money? My only concern is slow auto focus. Thanks

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its a big lens for travel but if you don't mind this is a fantastic lens for the quality of images you get. The autofocus wasn't that slow but it also depends on what camera you are using too.

      It works brilliantly on the a6000. I don't have the camera on me at the moment but its very quick to focus and almost always spot on.

    • @oiboiii
      @oiboiii 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Sison When using this on the a6000, how does it effect the aperture settings? can you still get it down to F4 considering its an full frame lens on a crop body

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      oiboiii You can still stop it down to F4 even if you're using this on the A6000. The only thing that changes is the focal length.

    About a year ago I got a Sony A7-II with the 55mm f/1.8 and I’m very happy with it (I’m not a pro), now that they are coming out with a 70-200 f/2.8 do you believe that the f/4 will drop in price?

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    does it balance well without a battery grip? i have the grip but i'm beginning to not like how my A7R look with the grip. too square. I wanna sell it but i'd like to know if it's necessary with the FE 70-200.

    Hi I have an older F4.5-5.6/70-300 G Lens (Alpha) that I use an adapt with the Alpha to E-Mount adapter (not the pass thru adapter but the more expensive Sony adapter with mirror.) With my A7-R This shoots really great images in full frame - Is it sort of a waste to get this E-Mount F4 70-200mm G FE mount lens since I have a 70-300mm? Or are there significant advantages of getting this F4 70-200mm G FE over what I have? Thanks.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are quite a few advantages like having a constant F4 aperture throughout the zoom, stabilization built in to the lens, weather resistance so its more rugged and the quality of photos is much better on the 70-200mm. The only thing you are really giving up is the zoom of the 70-300mm lens.

    I have a question that please answer. I have A7 with FE 2470 F4, FE 55 F1.8, and ZA 85 F1.4 now. However, due to limited budget I need to sell one of 55 or 85 to get the money to buy 70200 F4. I shoot a lot of portrait and some travel photo, which one do you think I should sell? ZA85 or FE 55? Thanks a lot.

  • @bobbygfl
    @bobbygfl 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi. I just purchased the sel70200 from Best Buy. Love it and your video is excellent. Question: it has a hard time communicating with the camera. During a typical shoot it will not focus or not respond to aperture or shutter changes. Zooming in and out or snapping a few out of focus pictures or pointing it at the ground and then back up at the scene will "wake up" the lens so to say and put me back in control. Have you heard of this? Are you aware of a fix. This does not occur on my A7ii with any other lens. Thanks!!

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +bobbygfl That isn't normal behaviour for the lens to work like that on the camera. Have you tried cleaning the contacts of the lens? If its still not working, I would get it serviced or get it replaced.

  • @LukesBikes
    @LukesBikes 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    if I already have the 18-105, do you think there's a lot of value in buying this lens? I don't shoot sports all the time, do you think the extra focal length is very necessary?

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think if you don't shoot sports or need that extra focal length all the time, you should be fine with the 18-105mm lens.

  • @bt10ant
    @bt10ant 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm curious about the second button on the barrel. You choose from full focus to 3 meters-infinity. Which situations would need this change? Thanks.... I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who already has used the lens. It's next on my list. I'd highly recommend the 18-105 f/4 G series lens for a great walkaround piece of glass.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +bt10ant You would change the focusing distance so the camera can focus faster without having to hunt from the minimum focusing distance to infinity to lock onto focus. So if your subject is far from you, you can change the focusing distance from full to 3m - infinite.

    Hi John, one more question regarding this lens, do you think that Tamron or Sigma will come out with a native (without adapters) 70-200 for the A7-II (for less money) in the near future, or there aren’t that many Sony cameras out there so they are not going to bother for now? Thank you.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +RickBSO To be honest, I'm not too sure and I don't think that lens would be priority for Sigma or Tamron for the A7 series cameras if they ever start making FE lenses.

    +John Sison thanks for the response. one more ? I'm saving up to get sony a7rii. What would be a good walk around/vacation lense I can use with my soon to be a7rii and my a6000.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +vhb408 There are a couple that you can consider. If you want a cheap lens that wouldn't be too heavy, you can get the Sony 28-70mm lens but if you need more range, the 24-240mm is another option but it will be more expensive, heavier and bigger. Both lenses are also made for full frame.

    hi john, can you give me some ideas if I wanna get this lens, because the 70-200 lens f.28 too expensive
    whether 70-200 f4 lens has been very good for the purchase?
    Color sharpness is very much the result?
    thanks john.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say for the money, its a great lens to get especially for colours and sharpness. Of course, the F2.8 is the better option but I don't think you would be disappointed with it.

  • @actionsportdude
    @actionsportdude 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    John, I am going round in circles here, but here goes!
    Tried the Clear image zoom on my Sony A6000 and it works perfect with the Sony 16-50mm as I see the zoom display in the top right hand corner , with the half way and 2x limit. It worked well and clear.
    However, does it work with the manual zoom action of the 70-200mm f4 G OSS as there then is no zoom display? So I cannot see how to extend into the 2x area to get a 400mm equivilant. OR THIS JUST NOT POSSIBLE?
    Any help aprreciated. Regards C

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      actionsportdude Its definitely possible. All you have to do is go into your custom key settings, assign a button for the function to "zoom" and once you have done that press the button you have assigned to zoom and you should be able to use clear image zoom on the camera.
      Let me know if you get stuck but that should do the trick :)

    • @actionsportdude
      @actionsportdude 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Sison You are the man!!, sure enough it worked, the zoom scale came up in the top right and then the far right wheel on top of the A6000 allows you to zoom in to selected magnifications.

      O0o that's a tough one to be honest. I haven't compared them directly so it will be hard to answer that question. Although, I did feel like the 70-200mm F4 was pretty fast in AF to be honest.

    What do you think of the combination of an a6000 with the Zeiss 24mm and Sony 70-200?
    I'm thinking that since the Zeiss is so sharp I can always crop in to cover the focal length gap (I have no 30-60mm lenses) or I could just switch to JPEG mode for some shots and use ClearZoom which turns my 24mm into a 24-48, sort of.
    I've been impressed with ClearZoom as if I'm just shooting a photo and don't need to crop in after the results of this digital zoom feel like I just shot the image normally, I can only really notice if the photo was taken at high ISO or I zoom into the CZ'd image. To be honest I've always turned my nose up at digital zooms on other cameras but here it actually works surprisingly well!

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drive Cancel That would be an awesome combo. And it looks like you're making good use of the clear image zoom pretty. I've always thought it did a better job compared to other manufacturers who do something similar.

    • @DriveCancelDC
      @DriveCancelDC 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great to hear! I also decided to pick up a Minolta 50/1.7 ($30!), so I think I have it all covered, I'm looking forward to using a fully manual lens but I think cropping (or CZ) using the 24mm is going to be perfectly fine in 99% of situations. :)

    John, I've rented this lens & LOVE it...but it's pricey. How does it compare to the Sony E 55-210mm F4.5-6.3 OSS Lens - if I needed to get that one due to my budget? I'm using the Sony a6000 and shooting lots of soccer (mostly outdoor, daytime). Thanks so much

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michele Giacobbe The 70-200mm G is much better in terms of build, has better stabilization and extra controls on the lens for focusing and stabilization and has a constant F4 aperture at any range while the 55-210mm is F4.5-6.3.

    Hi, I was wondering what your thoughts where on using this lens for indoor sports like track. I’m trying to get into the sport photography industry and the job I’m trying to get requires indoor sports mainly indoor track for the winter months. I’ve been able to borrow this lens from Sony Square for an outdoor event and it was super awesome but I’m wondering how well it will do indoors.

      @JohnSisonPhotography  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Apologies for the late reply. It should hold up rather well given you have decent lighting but if its pretty dim or you need faster shutter speeds the F2.8 version would be a lot better to go with than the F4.

      @justintang6060 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jesse H, depends what your doing. If you think your gonna actually make use of the longer 300mm then get it, but there is a tradeoff. Optically the 70-200 is better, and it will deliver better images in the end. :)

    Hi thanks for your review. You explain things clearly & at a good pace. I like the close up views of the lens & buttons.
    Q: This is described as moisture resistant but I couldn't see a rear seal. I read elsewhere that it doesn't have one. Is that the case? And surely a lens needs this to be described as weather resistant?
    Thanks

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It has a weather resistant design so it would probably be more around the zoom and focus rings but there isn't any rubber gaskets around the mount unfortunately.

    my question is, when would you use the infinity to 3 meter over full

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would use it for sports and wildlife that are far away so it limits the amount of time it takes the lens to focus.

    • @mickspawn
      @mickspawn 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mickspawn when you are not sure if they are going to be closers than 3 meters.

    Nice review. But I'll stick with my GH4 and 35-100 mm f2.8 lens which is the equivalent to this lens.

    • @jeejay98
      @jeejay98 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dont think it's comparable . Though the focal range multipled by crop factor X2 would instantly make it 70-200, you sacrifice the aperture to maximum f/5.6. (35-100 f/2.8 multiplied by crop factor 2 .0 = 70-200 f/5.6)
      The GH4 IMHO is the best bang for your buck.

    Thanks for the review John! I'm hoping to pick one of these up in hong kong in a few weeks to put on my new a6000. So that means i'll have the 16-70mm f4 zeiss (after your review), the 50mm f1.8 sony (after your review) and the 70-200mm f4 G OSS (because of this review)! And pretty much i wont need to buy any other lenses for now! Next job is working out what to put these things into! The 16-70mm is awesome. I dont care what the pixel peepers say! I'm really happy with my shots! The 50mm f1.8 is also great for those shallow DOF shots! I'm looking forward to getting the 70-200mm so i can start doing some longer range stuff! And next year i might invest in the 10-18mm as i've heard great stuff, and your review looked good with it! Pretty much i'm now torn between aluminium or carbong fibre travel tripod (3 legged thing punks range), and which bag to use for it all! The Temba switch 10 seems to be winning!

      It's decent in low light because of the constant aperture but ideally, you'd want to get an F2.8 lens for better low light in this range unless you don't mind pumping up your ISO on your camera.

    Thanks for review - always - just looks crazy big on the small a7/r/s - obviously to heavy for the A7 body so they supply the tri pod collar - other thing it is only F4.0
    Just looks like it should be on a DSLR body - defeats the point of small body and going light
    - Expensive for a F4.0
