If I'm correct I think the measurement separating 1st 2nd 3rd was only .003 or so. . I started benchrest shooting last year. it's definitely a challenge to stay consistent from relay to relay.. CONGRATS BART.
Just saw this, don’t know if I can get an answer but, when fire forming/ speed sorting brass, what rifle or barrel do you use? Can you explain? Is it a fresh barrel that this also serves to break in or an old barrel that has the same chamber as your competition rifle? This is a very expensive way to sort but it seems like the best by far.
It would make sense to me that the perfectly clean bore may allow some gas to squeeze by the bullet causing a slow shot and then as powder fouling coats the bore it may seal better and cause a velocity increase
I think most of the "don't clean" (technically don't strip copper) mentality can be traced back to the Magpul Dynamics Precision Rifle DVD's and Todd Hodnett telling people he doesn't strip copper fouling because of how unpredictable it makes your clean/cold bore shots. I stopped stripping copper out of my barrels after I saw that and since I really don't enjoy cleaning I happily believed that its actually better to not strip copper with chemicals and a brush and that running a few oiled patches down the barrel until they come out clean was the best "cleaning method" And I think the unpredictability of clean cold/bore shots really boils down to the fact that you are not actually getting all of your copper/carbon fouling out of the barrel. The unpredictability comes from the fact that the places that you are missing while cleaning changes every time, fouling left on the top of your barrel will behave differently than fouling on the side ect. And I will further suppose that the longer it takes for your gun to "settle down" after cleaning is the indicator that shows how much fouling you are leaving in the bore.
I just Watch this recently and found it verry intresting, Bart said he did not neck turn I wonder if he do neck sorting? Also I wonder the size of the bigger groups during 3 gun competition.
My factory browning 300 WM barrel was 3010ft/s for the first 300-400 rounds. One year I abused it a little (90 degree day) probably 15-20 rounds without much rest and it was hitting really high next range trip. It sped up to 3125 and required a 2g powder reduction to return to the prior node. Then it was all good. Maybe the needs mores just need a long string to speed them up. Factory barrels are not lapped to a 1/2 broke-in state(?)
@@SigmaBallistics Good call. I now have a borescope and I’ll check it out. I suspect your correct. I looked at some of the old primers and they were really flat…
@@patrick6087 you probably have a hardcore carbon ring in the end of the chamber/throat. Use a good carbon solvent (like boretech c4) with a nylon brush. if that doesn’t get it out just pick up some iosso abrasive (not the bore brite) and that will definitely get it out
@@SigmaBallistics well it had a lot of copper in it. I had cleaned it without the borescope and thought it was good. The borescope was about a year ago purchase. The barrel is pretty dang clean now, used Iosso and Barnes copper remover. Man it’s fire cracked… I’ll shoot it and see if things are better. Thanks for the input.
Eric, has firelapping a new barrel and then molycoating your bullets fallen totally out of vogue? (NECO) Or been proven not to matter with the quality of barrels you use? Lockease is graphite, not as slick as moly, yes?
Erik you sure get way down in the weeds when interviewing Benchrest guys! Great insight to a world of anal thinking. I’m surprised the issue of lubing necks and bullets didn’t come up. Something I have been playing with graphite and Neolube2. Love all of your interviews, keep them coming and keep em small!

Example with toothpaste does not stack up as teeth enamel is actually regenerating over time. If this was not the case, toothpaste would do unbelievable damage as an abrasive. That is not to say that I think Ioso is damaging to barrel steel, just pointing out the 'apples and oranges'. Also your first shot is slow mainly due to barrel temperature. Cold steel contracts and there is more rifling pressure on the bullet for the same propelling force. Lockies allows extra lubrication in the bore until temperature raises (rapidly) and dimensions change (in micro amounts). Barrel contraction and expansion is something many people fail to take into account. Barrel being rough and speeding up through build up of pressure is just nonsense. Gas and fluid dynamics simply don't work that way
No. Once optimum barrel temperature is reached (max. reasonable expansion) and the biggest difference in temperature (between cold to reasonably hot) is bridged, the speed remains constant given the same consistent powder charge. Assuming of course fouling is not excessive. If you drastically overheat the barrel, speed will again change a small amount (lower). Try it with a good chrono. Steel expands at different rates at different temperature.
Tooth enamel does not regenerate. If it did, dentists would not have to fill cavities.Toothpaste is abrasive but the abrasives used are very mild. Over the life of a person the amount of enamel removed is inconsequential with normal brushing.
Process of remineralization is ongoing throughout a persons life. This is what I meant when I said 'regeneration'. Take a piece of shiny metal and use toothpaste on it twice per day as a polishing action, see what happens over time. Without remineralization, toothpaste would eat through enamel within a year, possibly even faster.

did you borescope it? sounds like it needs a good clean

He's 6 months behind with orders of full boxes. Not a real driver to sell smaller lots. Check on forums; they pop up from time to time.

In 3 years, I've never seen the flags where I shoot be in synch. They simply refuse.
