This video will show you how to remove the turbo, rebuild the complete unit, and reinstall it back in the truck.
I'll also show you other problem areas to look for while you have the turbo off. Common problems that are much easier to take care of while the turbo is off.
I'll also show you how to fix some of the most common fuel leaks on these trucks.
I have shortened this video and kept a fast pace so I don't waste your time. I'll show you how easy it is to perform a turbo rebuild yourself, which takes less than an hour from start to finish once you have it out.

I watched your video months ago and I'm there now, sure enough, want to start the rebuild and I didn't save the vid, and no where to be found, Googles algorithm is a beast sometimes trying to wade through the muddy waters on searches. Done this twice now....installed wicked wheels with high flow outlets along with rebuild kits......my buddy’s turbo ended up backing the 4 bolts out of the center section and it came loose. The forums said it was actually common if your up pipes were loose and putting stress on the turbo. They called it heat jacking. We ended up taking it back apart to do up pipes and fix it.

Awesome man! I’m going to be rebuilding mine soon while deleting the the EBPV and new up pipes. I’m studying up before a make a fool of myself on camera. 🤣
Compared to other trucks the old 7.3L fords are one of the easiest turbos to get to and rebuild. If you have basic mechanical skills, the tools to do it and the time and patients to work trough any obstacles it’s not a super difficult job.

I have spent hour after hour on u-tube and elsewhere researching good info on rebuilding this particular turbo charger. You name it, I watched it! This is by far the better of all I have seen to date on the 7.3 2002 powerstroke. keep it up! I take my truck seriously!!

I have plenty more projects i'm working on now and will be posting much more. My videos are all geared towards the do it yourself-er. Thank you sir for this fine video. No Loctite needed on bolts? No oil on bearings when installing? No balancing needed?
No loc tite needed. It will burn off anyways. I would oil everything as you put it together. The wheel should be balanced when you get it. If you have a way to check and balance I would recommend it. I’m still driving this truck 3 years later with 360,000 miles on it so I think you’ll be ok without balancing it. 😁👍

Awesome video Steve. I have a 2000 f350 with the 7.3 and considering an upgraded wheel kit. Mine has almost 300k and has an extra 80 something Hp with chip. It will haul tail. I want to hear more whine from the turbo. Mine is already straight piped exhaust. Great job brother! I have a video on my truck installing a back up camera.

What is your recommended procedure prep for the first restart of a new/rebuilt turbo? Do you crank the motor with the fuel pump fuse/relay disconnected to get the oil flowing, or just pre-lube it to death, and start it normally? Ty
One thing I wish I had mentioned in this video was the importance of completely lubing every single part on reassembly. I did not do a good job at demonstrating or explaining this in the video but I did thoroughly fill the turbo with oil and made sure it was well lubed prior to reassembly. I did not crank the engine prior to starting it. I’m fact the restart I show in this video is the first restart after reassembly.
Grest video. Do have one removing a turbo with mounting bolts that only vaguely resemble bolts or were bolts at some point

Thanks for the feedback Cody, you are correct. I’ve since changed out the belt and idler pulley and put almost another 15k on this truck.

With few exceptions it's best to use OEM parts on this truck. Many of us have found that out the hard way. 250k on turbo seals is PLENTY long enough.
The upgraded rebuild kit is much better than oem here. Also, lots of us just can’t afford OEM prices.
Was it causing oil consumption and blue smoke out the tailpipe. I just pulled my intake off and saw oil build up on the bottom of the turbo and my truck eats oil.
Ricardo Garcia, Yes it started smoking pretty bad about a week or two before I made this video.
Not too bad , but you should have been drenching the parts in new oil before reassembly, rotating assembly shaft, bearings, bushings, orings etc.
very hard on all those moving parts to not be lubricated for initial start up !

Currently my truck is in pieces lol, the wheel looks like it’s a little damage and since i bought the truck used, i want to overhaul anything i can. I’m doing the fuel bowl, fuel lines and some other upgrades. 178k on my 2002.

Awesome! Glad I could help.
You’ll probably never notice any difference if you remove the EVP. in theory it does restrict the exhaust and allows less flow. However if you use your truck as I do for light hauling and rarely ever put your foot in it like your at the drag strip you’ll never notice a difference. The only reason I’d consider removing it is if it showed sings of wear or damage or if you’re building a high horsepower setup.
Another issue you run into is balancing. The wheels were either balanced separately or as one unit from the factory. If their is carbon built up on the wheels the assembly is out of balance, can you rebuild your turbo without having it re balanced sure can just depends on how lucky you feel and dont expect it to go 250,000 miles like the factory unit before it starts to puke again,, but for 40 bucks its worth having it rebalanced.
I looked into it around my area (Cincinnati Ohio) and didn’t find anyone that was interested in doing it quickly. I’m sure there are shops around this area that have the capability but it wasn’t something I had time for when I did this. This truck leads a pretty easy life towing a small camper and a boat less than 5000 miles per year at this point so hopefully it will last as long as I need it to.
My truck 1999 7.3 turbo is smoking and using a lot of oil...you think is the turbo??
abel Osorio, if I were you I would pull the intake tube off of the turbo. This is the tube that runs from your air cleaner box to the drivers side of the turbo. (I show you what to look for in the video)
There are many other reasons why your truck could be smoking. This is an easy one to confirm or rule out just by looking inside the turbo housing while the truck is running with this tube off.

If you got 250,000 miles out of the factory o rings im not sure what an upgrade would consist of regardless if it has a step or not. I'd say the factory equipment was pretty stout

The parts kit I used was purchased off of Amazon but appears to have been discontinued at this time. I did post a link to a similar kit in the description but it is not the same one I used.

Did it leak any oil or was it going out the tailpipe
Yes, It was leaking oil out of the intercooler pipes and started blowing white smoke out the tailpipe about two weeks before I tore it down. It was also leaking fuel so it was not a truck you wanted on your nice driveway. Over two years later and it's still running like a champ!

@@charlesbailey670 I noticed the oil leaking out of the pipes before I noticed the smoke. Smoke was mostly when I first started it cold. Best thing to do is pull the pipe off the intake side of the turbo and look to see if there is oil inside. There's really no other way for oil to get into the cold side of the turbo other than a bad seal in the turbo.

What went wrong with your turbo. I just have my pedestal seals leaking.
Dan Smith, check out the first part of the video. I explain what happened and show a short clip of what to look for. The seal on the main shaft went bad allowing oil to pass from the turbo strait down into the intake. It’s a pretty common common problem on these turbos.

Awesome video, thanks for posting. There weren't many great videos out there on this subject when I looked at doing this last year. Some guy forgot to change pedestal o rings lol on one video. I picked up a used turbo for $80 and will build it to minimise down time. Weather is cold here. One question? How do I choose a new waste gate actuator?
That clip on the back of the turbo is impossible to remove...
It can be a real bear. I ended up taking everything else loose and then prying the turbo back and forth to twist the clamp and break it loose.
Sam Augustine took me almost 2.5 hours to get mine off. Everything else was a breeze compared to that piece
