      I like this pair, but they are really good at performing romantics or Mozart. This Shostakovich interpretation is a bit too romantic for me. He is the genius of grumpiness. The image presented by the boys is more than positive at some points. I hear the panic attacks, less the depression.

    Shosta started as silent cinema pianist. His piano music is thus always a musical theatre. Close your eyes and see the story unfold...the chase of horses and cars...the love story...it's all there!
    The boys are good here...

    I love the directly contrasting (competing?) moods. It is like Prokofiev's use of contrasting keys when he is at his best. Think Romeo and Juliet. And now the difference between 16ths in one piano and 8ths in the other that makes the 8ths feel slow.

    I like this a lot. I do wonder, though, whether leaving the piano lid on one piano but not the other might result in quite an uneven distribution of the sound for anyone present in the hall?

    • @stevearnold8467
      @stevearnold8467 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't know about that, but it's totally necessary to remove the lid from at least the downstage piano because of sight line issues.

    • @Soffity
      @Soffity หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@stevearnold8467the lid also reflects the sound out into the body of the hall. It’s designed that way. If they kept the lid on the front piano the sound would be reflected backwards for that piano and forwards for the other piano.

    Meditative, lively, and fun. Opinions about Shostakovich’s music differ radically: from "of visionary power and originality” to “derivative, trashy, empty and second-hand". We all know that when it comes to this wonderful and divine gift we call Art(s) it is literally impossible not to have to deal with the detested and loved subjectivity lens. So, no matter how much we hate criticism, we can not do anything to avoid it; it will always be there, simply because it is part of who we are. The two main ingredients of opinion are the same two main ingredients of consciousness or the soul: thoughts and feelings. It is what we essentially are, the physical body is just a suit, so to speak. So, even if you're not aware of it and even if you don't use words to express it, you always have an opinion of things. Sincere constructive criticism should always be welcomed, it enriches our experience in this plane... I have to be honest I enjoy Shostakoich music much more than Stravinsky's. A composition doesn't have to be extremely complex to be a good composition. Shostakovitch's music is much more digestible and enjoyable. Let's leave extremely complex and inharmonious music to those who think of themselves as superior intellectually because they listen to it; I prefer Harmony (spiritually healthier)... Shostakovitch composed this piece for his 16-year-old son. It was obviously not only composed with love but it also reflexes the typical energies of a father: reflexive, balanced, wise (the hymn-like Adagio), and his teenage son: cheerful, lively, full of energy (Allegretto). The Allegretto reminds me of the silent-film music used in some of Buster Keaton's chasing scenes (Why not? Shostakovich composed a lot of film music). Could this contrast between the hymn-like Adagio and the Allegretto be interpreted as a mock to Stalin's regime? As if running away from it? Just speculating a little... Anyway, excellent interpretation, guys. Bravi!!!
    PS I guess the staccato octaves might sound even more interesting if played like Bach's staccatos (one of his favorite composers...)

      I agree. It became fast crazy noise for me. The Gromoglasova sisters play their version on TH-cam, it’s not as frantic. Still a bit fast but that’s just my opinion. It’s marked Allegretto not allegro or presto. 😵‍💫 I suppose each performer wants to do something a bit different other wise they would all sound the same but you still want to be able to hear the notes not just a blur of sound.

  • @fluegelspieler

      It’s crazy fast. Just because you can play that fast doesn’t mean you should. I’m a big fan of these two but they often play things too fast. That section is marked Allegretto, not even Allegro, let alone presto.
      When I first discovered this piece I was hoping the Jussens would play it and was so excited when I saw they had posted it. The first bit was lovely but then for me it was just a noise after that.
