The thing that I have learned the most recently with how I view my own faith, is that fear is what drives Christians to become unwelcoming, hypocritical, and judgmental. Because the only reason why they restrict themselves from certain choices is because of fear of punishment. And then they turn that back on nonchristians... which is insane.

this is almost exactly what it's like for me. my whole family is catholic and i have this fear of being disowned, a fear of dying, and a huge fear of going to hell. it's not good. the only thing that's different for me is that i dont project my fears onto other people. i like that other people find it so easy to believe in whatever they believe. but my personal relationship with religion is incredibly strange and awfully toxic. its not good for me or my mental health, but its all ive ever known. catholicism has been a huge part of my family for generations. its impossible to walk away from

I’m a Christian and the fear mongering is wrong. If I believe that everyone who doesn’t believe is going to hell, and that the only way they can be saved is to except Jesus, then the best way for me to spread that to other people is to get to know them and live my life as an example for those around me. If they ask I’ll tell them perhaps ask them if there interested if they aren’t It isn’t my job to scare them into it.

Yeah I'm really worried about him tbh. A fair amount of young Christians end up being drawn to the church through the idea that suffering=holiness and the reward comes after death. Its a good incentive for people to dig deeper into their sorrow and cry out to God rather than seeking professional help.

This reminds me of one of my biggest problems I had with church when I attended. Every sermon assumes that you aren't doing enough. You aren't allowed to be satisfied with your relationship with God. I remember going to youth camp after having a very difficult crisis of faith. I was at a point where I was doing better and just wanted to explore my feelings by myself. When my counselor asked me what I wanted to work on spiritually while at camp, I just said there wasn't really anything I wanted to work on. She scoffed at me and quoted Revelations 3:16 at me ("You are lukewarm, I spit you out of my mouth."). It really hurt and made me question if my leaders were being honest when they said you are always enough for God. Later interactions with church leaders convinced me I wasn't.
My grandma detested fear mongering Christians who made others run to Jesus because they fled from Hell. She used to tell us: “Lets say this man is fleeing from a stabber and runs into traffic. Does this man now love, support and worship traffic? Does he pray to trucks with love in his heart? Or is he only looking over his shoulder?” Far too many Christians love to skip the large part of Jesus’ teachings that people should only choose to follow Him, that they could not be pressured or forced into loving Him. That fear of bad things does not make love of good things. That guilt tripping people about the way they worship Him means you cast judgment which is a massive sin. They don’t seem to listen much to His words at all. I’m so sorry you went through this.

The thing that I have learned the most recently with how I view my own faith, is that fear is what drives Christians to become unwelcoming, hypocritical, and judgmental. Because the only reason why they restrict themselves from certain choices is because of fear of punishment. And then they turn that back on nonchristians... which is insane.

I’m a Christian and the fear mongering is wrong. If I believe that everyone who doesn’t believe is going to hell, and that the only way they can be saved is to except Jesus, then the best way for me to spread that to other people is to get to know them and live my life as an example for those around me. If they ask I’ll tell them perhaps ask them if there interested if they aren’t It isn’t my job to scare them into it.

Jesus spread love to everyone: prostitutes, beggars, tax collectors, thieves, mothers, temple workers, fishermen, etc. He did that to save people and show them the light of God. Whereas the Pharisees preached to make themselves look holier and to make others feel inferior. They manipulated people for power. Christianity should never be about scaring people into acting a certain way or doing works to appease an angry god. Christianity should be about creating a relationship with your creator, who loves you so much, and walking with Him every day of your life. I'm sorry @Remy Carreiro if you've had bad experiences with other Christians, but know that Christians like that are not real Christians.
@@aidenhoogstra8636 I only experienced hate from christianity and a lot of threatening. But I'm more than aware of the loving and positive side of this religion. There are a lot of really nice and loveable christians out there and I accept your relegion just as much as I accept all other religions :) (as long as they are accepting and not hateful, obviously).

As a child who grew up in a conservative household, I would literally have panic attacks and developed extreme ptsd from all of the fear mongering involved in that religion. Now I can't even drive by a church without feeling uncomfortable. This type of fear based religion is so toxic.

Yeah I'm really worried about him tbh. A fair amount of young Christians end up being drawn to the church through the idea that suffering=holiness and the reward comes after death. Its a good incentive for people to dig deeper into their sorrow and cry out to God rather than seeking professional help.

This reminds me of one of my biggest problems I had with church when I attended. Every sermon assumes that you aren't doing enough. You aren't allowed to be satisfied with your relationship with God.
I remember going to youth camp after having a very difficult crisis of faith. I was at a point where I was doing better and just wanted to explore my feelings by myself. When my counselor asked me what I wanted to work on spiritually while at camp, I just said there wasn't really anything I wanted to work on. She scoffed at me and quoted Revelations 3:16 at me ("You are lukewarm, I spit you out of my mouth.").
It really hurt and made me question if my leaders were being honest when they said you are always enough for God. Later interactions with church leaders convinced me I wasn't.

My grandma detested fear mongering Christians who made others run to Jesus because they fled from Hell. She used to tell us: “Lets say this man is fleeing from a stabber and runs into traffic. Does this man now love, support and worship traffic? Does he pray to trucks with love in his heart? Or is he only looking over his shoulder?”
Far too many Christians love to skip the large part of Jesus’ teachings that people should only choose to follow Him, that they could not be pressured or forced into loving Him. That fear of bad things does not make love of good things. That guilt tripping people about the way they worship Him means you cast judgment which is a massive sin. They don’t seem to listen much to His words at all. I’m so sorry you went through this.
