Beware Backward Knight Moves | Climbing the Rating Ladder vs. Torres92 (1292)

  • In this continuation of the "Climbing the Rating Ladder" series I take on players of various ratings levels while pointing out typical mistakes and spots for improvement along the way (possibly my own!? :)). Here I commentate a 5+5 game against a player rated 1292 on Chess.com. In a main line of the Giuoco Piano (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5), Black plays a less critical move featured in the classic game Steinitz vs. von Bardeleben, Hastings 1895 (which I analyze with a physical board here: • Steinitz's Efficient A... ). I obtain the bishop pair and an edge, but just when I think I'm winning material, Torres92 plays an excellent backward knight move to thwart my attack! #Chess #ChessInstruction #ClimbingTheRatingLadder

    • @JusticeStiles
      @JusticeStiles 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Mohammad-zc7gn very possible, but there could also be a selection bias going on here. Many 1200 players would shy away from the chance to play an IM unless they were already ardent students of the game. I suspect this means he ends up playing a better class of 1200 than the average. It's the 1200 and rapidly rising rather than the 1200 and stagnant type (if that makes any sense). One possibly anyway.

    Hey, John, (or anybody really) i have a peculiar question. I'm at 1650 on lichess and I've read only two books; Book of Morphy and Modern Strategy. (Age 22, started playing 8 months ago)
    The thing is tho, analyzing my games, but particularly playing, I sense a bizarre blindness which I can't really explain, is almost like my brain is forcing me to do the wrong move.
    Example, often i see the idea and the right move to do (according to engine after the game), but for some reason i suddenly decide that is not really a good idea or that i should prepare before or whatever. The result is always an average of 5, 6 imprecises moves. On bad days even 9. Is like an urge, a craving feeling that makes me not analyze the positions the way it should, and even when playing rapid or classical, often i found myself making moves within less than 30 seconds.
    Im trying to work on it but is really only a time thing? Im being too hard on myself bc I have only 8months of chess?
    The games that i play "with open eyes", its a grotesque difference. I feel different playing, even beated a 1800+ once without much effort. But what it takes to get to this state more often? Is like i play 10 games completly blind and delusional and one crystal clear...
    Anyone have had the same thing? Or can comment on that?

      I think you’re not appreciating the difference between “easy” games and sharp games. You’re probably playing about the same but our brains learn certain patterns faster than others. If your opponent gets in a bad position early it’s a lot easier to play. It’s like the good moves are the only moves that jump out at you.
      8 months isn’t very long to play, so you’re still new. 30 seconds per move is pretty fast. Do a lot of tactics. If you start doing tactics you’ll see that you’re spending minutes to see them. So keep that in mind during live games.

      @@rathelmmc3194 Thanks for the answer. I do tatics everyday for the last month, I've getting better on that but then arouses another problem, convert a won game into a win is pretty hard lol

      Erick Sallieri, endgame is hard. It just takes a lot of practice, and people don’t get a lot of practice when they have lower ratings. I’m sure most games you win because people hang a piece and you just mop up. Just give it time. It probably takes 10000 games to really be “good”.

      @@rathelmmc3194 Yes, thats correct. And more often than I would like, most of my losses are in the endgame. I pretend to read an endgame book soon, I'm sure that it will help
