Chopping Down the Alapin Sicilian | Climbing the Rating Ladder vs. 2137

  • In this continuation of the "Climbing the Rating Ladder" series I take on players of various ratings levels while pointing out typical mistakes and spots for improvement along the way (possibly my own!? :)). Here I commentate a 10+0 game against a player rated 2137 on Chess.com. The Alapin Sicilian (1.e4 c5 2.c3) is an opening I recommend from the White side, and here I face it with the Black pieces. Although 2...d5 and 2...d5 are the most theoretically sound ways to reply, in this case I opt for 2...g6, a line that may appeal to Accelerated Dragon/Hyperaccelerated Dragon players. The idea is that after a d2-d4 and ...c5xd4, Black will only then counterattack in the center with ...d7-d5. If White staggers their structure with e4-e5, Black may begin to "chop down the tree" by means of ...Nb8-c6, ...Bc8-g4fxf3, ...Qd8-b6, and ...Ng8-h6 or ...e7-e6 and ...Ng8-e7-f5. Tremendous pressure against the d-pawn could emerge, and Black's bishop on g7 may even join the party with a well-timed ...f7-f6.

    Very good tip about remembering that when you move your queens bishop you are undefending your b pawn. Eventually I will be able to remember that beforehand.

    Right at the end, if Ke1 after Ne3+ then you have mate in 1 with Re2# rather than mate in 2 with Rg1 or Rh1. Small point but it's a neat pattern to know about

    22:25 "something that you can use from the white side and really build a pawn for your advantage" is what I heard at first in the microsecond before it collapsed to "build upon" in my head.

    Hi John, I have a non chess related comment if you don't mind. regarding your video thumbnail. As a graphic designer, i would suggest that maybe you would consider starting with the word on top instead of bottom of the blue line. ie: "climbing" should be on top since people tend to read top to bottom you might see how some people would at first glance read the sentence as :"The Ladder Climbing Rating".

    Hey John, I’d be curious what you think of this guy’s account. I think it’s an account with rating manipulation.
    He has wins against high-rated rapid accounts that threw the game to him and all the high-rated accounts are banned. His other games are all over the place playing multiple games against people rated 100-400.
    My conclusion was, he is creating alternate accounts and cheating with them to inflate the ratings of those accounts and then throwing away games against his main account to inflate his rating without using computer assistance on his main account.

      what a bizarre thing to do

    • @gcollins1992
      @gcollins1992 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I will be the first to admit that I'm not qualified to say this, but I found the play from white here very uncharacteristically lax for a player of that level. Every player even close to that rating that I have ever played has completely blown me off the board... but while this player was making moves I felt like the responses were obvious and natural. Only replying to your comment (as opposed to making my own) because I felt like having many comments to the same effect would be a potential dogpile rather than a reply which leaves room for reasonable discussion.
      Potential counterpoints: Having played John three times I also know that the experience is terrifying and I've made outright 1-2 move blunders that are atypical around 1400, and I also know that watching Masters play makes everything look easier than it is... however, even so, after a lot of the moves I found myself immediately confused and THEN John would vocalize the same thing.
      IDK, hopefully not what you suspect but I understand why you think it.

    • @connormonday
      @connormonday 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gcollins1992 the guy’s level was what made me look at the account. I have experienced similar fear while playing against people John’s level that probably affected my decision-making. That doesn’t explain the weird game history on the account, however. Also, I would say certain blunders like Rxe6 exceed the explanation in your counterpoint. A genuine 2100 would at least resign against an IM after such an embarrassing mistake.

    • @gcollins1992
      @gcollins1992 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@connormonday to be clear, I don't think you're wrong, I was just trying to find other explanations to give potential grace. I am a little glad that at least one other person was raising their eyebrow though, because sometimes I fall victim to the: "My opponents don't make bad moves like this" fallacy and had a brief thought that it could be that at work here.
