Stalking Double Isolated Pawns in the 3...Qa5 Scandinavian | Climbing the Rating Ladder vs. 2350

- In this continuation of the "Climbing the Rating Ladder" series I take on players of various ratings levels while pointing out typical mistakes and spots for improvement along the way (possibly my own!? :)). Here I commentate a 10+0 game against a player rated 2350 on Chess.com. For the past 8+ months I've been working on a course on the 3...Qa5 Scandinavian that I'll be self-releasing in a couple months (details forthcoming!), and this game (like the previous CTRL game: • Don't Fear a Discovere... ) provides a good opportunity to test the repertoire and discuss some move orders and ideas. Here, my opponent chooses a Stockfish-approved line with the early knight jump 6.Ne5, but after 6...c6, they spurn the most theoretically critical 7.Bc4 in favor of 7.Bd3, offering a simple bishop swap. A few moves later, my opponent shocks me by voluntarily taking on double isolated pawns!

Perfect way to spend a cold, snowy night, huddled in front of a warm laptop watching a John Bartholomew analysis fresh from the video oven. And now that you've hooked me on the Scandinavian, I could use all the guidance I can get.
Super instructive, sometimes I realize that my opponent has double isolated pawns but struggle to figure out a gameplan to exploit them. Even as a non-scandi player this was very informative, thanks John!
Pleased that this helps you!
This is like a Scandinavian Player's fine wine! Thanks so much for walking us through all these common positions and how to think about them!
You bet! Thanks for watching 🙏
I love how John takes the time to explain his thoughts. He id giving to use useful chess theory for free
John's like, "I've been engrossed with the scandi for 8 months." We all know it's been more like 8 years!
*20 years! :)

This is just insane, you did the whole video standing up.. 😯😯
😂 Good eye!
I immediately found Nc8 to be a strong candidate move. Interesting that the engine likes that move too!
44:26 - 45:47 is super insightful. Very helpful info.
Really psyched for your Qa5 Scandi course... I've been playing it for decades, I had all the old books by GMs Evans & Emms, Dunne & Taylor, Grefe & Silman, Harmon & Taulbut, Hodges, and the Scheming Scandi video by IM Martin. Dug your other takes on Qd8 and Qd6 too, but Qa5 is my favorite. You rock JB!!
Love it! I will have to check out those older works sometimes; it'd be cool to see how the theory of the Scandinavian has involved going back to before I was born. I think you'll enjoy the course!
"I didn't want you guys to yell at me in the comments that I'm giving you a heart attack."
_slowly backs away..._
(Thanks for the instructive--if cardio-intensive--game! 😉)
Early bird! Get em, John
im just in awe that you did the whole video standing up, poor knees 😅
I really enjoy watching these long analysis videos, thanks John.
Glad you like them!
Love the emphasis on the Scandi lately. Really looking forward to your course release. Following along in the main line is satisfying..."oh, I know that!" is a great feeling. Getting that feeling in side lines is going to be fantastic!
wow, really surprising your opponent didn't make you play that out with R+K! Look forward to the analysis later!
By sometime i mean 11 or 12 years ago.. Johns Memory!!!
Thanks for the vid...always good getting a notification that one has dropped.
Thanks Ben 😊
There are situations where double isolated oawns can be really good. I had one today. They were passed and I had two bishops, a knight and two rooks fighting against a queen and two rooks so I had a winning advantage. The pawns controlled several central squares and provided support and protection to my three minor pieces - a really awesome combo! The engine also preferred the isolated pawns even at a high depth so I think I made the right decision.
Much fun. Now I hope for a Scandi opportunity soon.
Love it 😊
Really enjoyed all of your analysis and instruction that followed this game. Thank you, John!
Great game and even better analysis. Thanks John!
Glad you enjoyed it!
You had me a little scared with the time situation in game, but well finessed.
Thanks for another instructional video. Your Scandinavian Course on Chessable is rock-solid.
Thanks for the video!
You bet - thanks for watching!
Hello Johnathan, it is guys
John not Johnathan, but I'll give guys a pass this time 😉
Ahhh I was really hoping to see Bc4 in the opening after Ne5 where you'd have to demonstrate what you ended up talking about in the post-game analysis.
Maybe next time :)
Love the Scandi streak.
Can confirm you did look at maneuvering the knight from b6 to f5 at 7:13...
Will your course be dropping on chessable? Watching your games and very clear and cogent explanations, this Caro-Kann player is intrigued
Love to hear it! Caro and Scandi share a lot of similarities, but I think Scandi brings a different flavor to the table and empowers you a bit more to play on your own terms.
I'll be self-publishing this course, with full PGN download available to the student. Haven't decided which platform I'll use, but you'll surely here about it on my channel in the next couple. Appreciate your interest!
another instructive scandi
As someone at the 2100ish blitz range I found some of your opponent's choices very weird too. I looked up their profile and found out they're 500 blitz. I'm not one to accuse people of cheating at the blink of an eye, but giving himself double isolated pawns seems like a 500 move, not a 2000+ move.
Thank you ❤
It is a good night! A new JB video just dropped!
Hey, guys and John. This is guy.
I just love how you're crushing fools with the scandi :)
Hey John, I'm a proud Scandi player myself and looking for the newest trends. I found recently an article by GM Lorenzini, who claims the Qa5 Scandi doesn't work anymore because of 6. Bd2. After 6. e6 7. Ne5 Qb7 8. Qf3 c6 9. O-O-O Nbd7 he said black is suffering and fighting for the draw. Do you cover this in your course and do you have a solution? I'm really looking forward to your course
Hey, thanks for the comment! See my last CTRL video against Pink_Yeti, as well as my Charlotte analysis video against Restelli for that move order. It's a dangerous one, which is why I propose Black avoid it entirely with 6...Nbd7!?, as played in both of those games. I'd be curious what GM Lorenzini has to say about that approach (or 6...c6), as I haven't seen his article.
scandi ranks right up there with london as least happy to play either way
I appreciate the honesty 😂
Hi John this is guys
Where’s the beef!
SNL little old lady, didn't like her hamburger
John, guys this is hey!
Hey John, this is guys
The fact I learnt how to play chess from books and a board makes it, difficult to learn from courses online.
Ah, interesting. Do you use any chess software/digital programs?
Cooluser2525 is 600 blitz
Always love the long analysis, but please take care of yourself, don’t overdo it -- health is more important 😢
Hey guys, this isn't John.
Your opponent has a blitz rating of 588 and a bullet rating of 781 (he’s not inactive either).
I think he is using an engine on a weaker setting. This game had all the typical random looking strategic decisions of a weak engine.
2350 oh yeah come on another come??
Hey John
🙋♂️
You need to play few games against someone rated ≥200 points higher than you to see how your theory works out.
Idea of the opening is to equalize first...that he definitely does but GMs can overpower in endgame or later middle game.
Hummm. 2350 you say. Interesting. Strange. Shot himself in the foot, maybe?
