Developing a Plan in the Early Middlegame | Climbing the Rating Ladder vs. trhdude (1844)

  • In this continuation of the "Climbing the Rating Ladder" series I take on players of various ratings levels while pointing out typical mistakes and spots for improvement along the way (possibly my own!? :)). Here I commentate a 5+5 game against a player rated 1844 on Chess.com. After some standard moves in a Hedgehog, White hesitates, burning valuable time with his light-square bishop. Meanwhile, I'm able to implement some important plans like ...Be7-d8-c7 and ...Re8-g8 followed by ...g7-g5-g4. Although later analysis reveals White is OK, it is critical to develop a plan after you complete the opening phase (or, better yet, even before you complete the opening!). #Chess #ChessInstruction #ClimbingTheRatingLadder

I believe this rating class is the best for the series, since it's enough to get quite complex games with useful themes for explanation, but it still garantees some minor (sometimes not) mistakes to comment on that is very useful as well.

John, I've a question: you seem to flick through and decide between candidate moves really quickly, like you'll go 'x is a move I'm considering, but no, let's go for y' without pausing. Is that a calculation thing - you've seen the one or two-move responses to all your candidates and chosen on that basis, or is it largely instinct, or both? I'm just amazed you can do so much background calculation while talking. Great video as ever!

Thanks John. I sometimes find myself in a situation where I'm starting to drift - where I'm just making "nothing" moves because I can't really think of a plan. And 3 or 4 nothing moves in a row can morph into a horrible position. This usually happens if I play when I'm not really in the mood. Junk play is the worst kind of play!

I actually was really excited to see a Najdorf.
That was the first opening i learned with black but i realized that many just know the theory well and i got dry of ideas.
That made me to change my opening to your Scandi repertoire against 1.e4 which is wonderful against strong players who are not well prepared for the opening and it is unbreakable almost. But against weaker players it doesn't gives as much problems and sharp positions as the Najdorf and they can take me to unnecessary long exhausting games.
Next time try to play it on the standard series i want to see a mainline :).

Hi John. Something I've been meaning to ask about for some time. How on earth do master players quantify 'compensation'? This is a topic that is utterly beyond my understanding. I mean, what is sufficient 'compensation' for a pawn, the exchange, a piece or even the queen [ where I'm assuming that the only compensation is a forced mating attack]. With material, you can count the points, but how do you 'count the points' when assessing 'compensation'?

This is the only video of John's (that I've seen so far) that has been slightly disappointing. I need to develop my sense of 'developing a plan' but I don't feel I really learnt anything from this video. I hate to say it, because the other videos I've just watched before this, in the 'Chess Fundamentals' series, were brilliant and really useful, so I was expecting this to be similar. (I also see it's really out of sequence with the other videos - I watched it because it was the next one recommended by TH-cam.) But overall, there's so much instructive and generous content that John's put out that I don't want to sound too critical.

at 11:56 instead of white playing Bg5 he goes Kd5 and after trading Bxd5 , Qxd5 black has to capture the queen on d5 or f5 is hanging
so Qxd5 cxd5 and now white is threatening to take f5 and also is black trying to protect the f5 with the rook, Rc2 doubling rook on C file winning the bishop on c7 and if black plays Rf7 white can win the exchange with Bxb6 ( and win the game )
I think it was very obvious and clear how did he miss it?
