  • μῆνιν ἄειδε θεὰ Homer’s Iliad 1.1 Sing Wrath, Goddess. Bettina Joy de Guzman. UCSB Concert
Sing wrath, Goddess: the wrath of a suffering hero in a time of war, when gods loved powerful queens, and mortal deeds lived forever through song. Composed and performed by Bettina Joy de Guzman on Luthieros.com phorminx (Homer, Iliad 1.1-56)
    τίς τ᾽ ἄρ σφωε θεῶν ἔριδι ξυνέηκε μάχεσθαι;
    Λητοῦς καὶ Διὸς υἱός:
    ...
Sing wrath, Goddess, the wrath of Achilles, son of Peleus,
that destructive wrath which brought countless woes upon the Achaeans,
and sent forth to Hades many valiant souls of heroes,
and made them themselves spoil for dogs and every bird; thus the plan of Zeus came to fulfillment,
from the time when first they parted in strife
Atreus' son, king of men, and godlike Achilles.
Who then of the gods was it that brought these two together to contend?
The son of Leto and of Zeus…
For nine days the missiles of the god ranged among the host,
but on the tenth Achilles called the people to assembly,
for in his heart, the goddess, white-armed Hera had put it,
since she pitied the Danaans, when she saw them dying.
Sing wrath, Goddess, the wrath of Achilles, son of Peleus.
Thank you for hosting the event, Dorota Dutsch, and
special thanks to Helen Morales for making it possible through the Argyropoulos endowment in Hellenic Studies.

Revelatory! People overlook that these magnificent verses are meant to be sung, not monotonously read in prosaic fashion. I'm so glad to have discovered your work.

The minds of the ancient Greeks are alien to our own. You'd think they'd love Hector, but Achilles wrath + Aristoi was what was considered best, especially in the archaic period.

I love this! If I may ask a bit about your process, was there a rationale behind deciding which of the polytonic pitch accents to incorporate and which to leave out? I noticed that you sing a lot of the circumflexes, which sound beautifully haunting in your rendition

thank you so much! When studying ancient music that has both lyrics and music notes like Athenaios' paean to Apollo, you will notice that the composer did not always follow pitch, so I can only conclude that, like me, he sometimes followed a melody that makes sense to him, and made the lyrics make more sense, rather than strictly following pitch when spoken. You are really great and I like your voice ond the composition of the music and the lyrics. As a Greek I can tell you that you could try to have a better pronunciation in Greek words. But you are incredible!

When I’m in Greece, I pronounce Ancient Greek in Greek, but in most countries where Classics are studied, they prefer reconstructed Ancient Greek pronunciation , so I sing that way in recordings. If you’re in Athens, I’ll be performing in Cycladic Museum in November! You can check bettinajoydeguzman.com events! I’ll update my website- it’s very much behind since I got too busy last year!!
