  • Hymn to Pythian Apollo: When Apollo plays his lyre, the deathless gods can think of nothing else but his songs. Composed by Bettina Joy de Guzman on Luthieros phorminx, performed with Thanasis Kleopas. (Homeric Hymn to Pythian Apollo, lines 182-191)
Leto's all-glorious son goes to rocky Pytho, playing upon his hollow lyre, clad in divine, perfumed garments; and his lyre, at the touch of the golden plectrum, sings sweet.
then immediately the undying gods think only of the lyre and song,
and all the Muses together, voice sweetly answering voice,
hymn the unending gifts the gods enjoy and the sufferings of men, all that they endure at the hands of the deathless gods.
Notes: Ah, Santorini...This was the second day that I had ever spent with Thanasis Kleopas, and we had rehearsed this song a total of one hour, because of our crazy schedule conflicts. The day before, when we met in person for the first time, I knew the words I wanted to sing, and the rhythm I wanted to sing-- dactylic hexameter. What I did not know until Thanasis lent me a lyre, (as I couldn’t carry mine from California to Santorini without inflicting damage on my instrument) was what key the instrument could carry best. I had requested that he try to borrow a 7-string lyre for me-- one I could handle easily. So he had borrowed one from the generous Yannis Pantazis, owner of Symposion, and he tuned it for me, to a key that sounded good with his own 11-string lyre. Then I composed in about five minutes, and we rehearsed for about fifteen, before the fabulous film director Christos called and said we had to hurry to catch the sunset. So we climbed hills for about half an hour until we reached a gorgeous destination. Then we played the song-- it was our first real rehearsal-- as Christos filmed and recorded our “First Rehearsal at the Caldera.” As the sun was setting, we rehearsed a few more times. Then, as Greeks do, we ate a fabulous dinner at Mama Thira Restaurant. We could have rehearsed then, but all I wanted was to relax, after the brutal schedule of the previous week, of two TV interviews, a magazine article, and two concerts. And we relax we did, listening to Thanasis sing in his mellifluous tones. The next day, Christos and I filmed “Sirens Call,” during sunrise. Then I insisted that we go to Akrotiri excavation site. And finally, later, we met up with Thanasis. And there we were, with only a total of one hour of rehearsal, to film this song, live. But we trusted the magic of music, and we just each took a deep breath… and sang, and played on these lyres. And our voices and lyres wove something here, I think, that the Muses would have smiled about…

Special thanks to Armand D’Angour for helping with meter and pronunciation. Admittedly I’m a bit stubborn about some things but I mostly take his suggestions-- it’s not his fault that modern Greek has affected my ear...

I'm writing a book about Odysseus (his entire life) and your videos are very inspiring. When I hear you I am here, in Troy, or at Ithaca, or even in Olympus. Divine. You deserve to be more known. Best discovery on TH-cam

To hear this beautiful song, is the closest I will ever be to visiting a holy site in Ancient Greece, I can almost smell the incense in the temple. Very soothing to the soul. Such gifts are priceless in the chaotic times in which we live. Thank you.

I found this quite by accident, while searching up hymns to Apollo, this appeared in the suggested. At the first note, the tears started. At the first word, the dam broke. This is beyond beautiful and, as one touched by Apollo in multiple aspects, may I say that blessings from Apollo and the Muses be upon you.

You mean in hymns? This is from Homeric Hymn to Apollo. 😊 there are two parts- to Delian Apollo, and to Pythian Apollo.

@@arthurking6639 its the same god, but in different aspects - usually the difference comes in what each aspect is more known for (e.g. Pythian Apollon is more well known for His fortune-telling powers)
