What If Asteroid Apophis Hit Earth?

  • Asteroid Apophis was recognized as one of the most dangerous asteroids that could collide with the Earth in 2029. However, when astronomers watched Apophis and learned more about its orbit, their judgment of its impact evolved. Now, astronomers have concluded that there is no risk of Apophis reaching our planet for at least a century, thanks to the results of a new radar observation campaign paired with precise orbit analysis. But what would happen if it actually hit us? Watch the video!

If this is coming within 20k miles of earth and we have that much notice, this is 100% an object we can interact with. @@Cosmoknowledge That is a very weak argument. That data has singular, simple to control origins. If NASA what you to calculate a 30,000km miss they can give you that data to add up to that. I'm not implying that is what's happening. The other logical inconsistency is to acknowledge the Yarkovsky effect and suggest certainties with regards to longer-term orbital mechanics and the impacts on gravitational assists; these are permanently compounding possible outcomes. The simple fact is, an event such as this has been in the religious texts for millenia and this rock they named so innocently is the best candidate for this generation. So, while I hope you are correct, I think you are very wrong. Quite simply, the powers that be will never be honest once the truth is known and all they need is an event to get all their folks to a safe place...like a funeral of a monarch or something. Enjoy the dry run/rest of Operation London Bridge.

Also, the meteoroid that hit the JWST's was less than .1 millimeter in diameter. The only reason it did any damage is where it hit, and because there is no friction in space, so objects fly around at great speeds. Anything hitting Earth loses mass by burning up while entering the atmosphere. Also, no offence, but yes, NASA doesn't track every single fuckin' meteoroid that's about one tenth of a MILLIMETER in diameter. Space is full of micrometeoroids, but they don't and won't impact anything or anyone. Actual objects of notable sizes (y'know, bigger than grains of sand) are humongous distances away from each other.

@@bobgrant7593 If memory serves, the last estimate was around 19,400 miles or so. A question is whether the trajectory will alter or not. I read somewhere that when the flyby occurs it will be visible (using binoculars) in the central Asia area. My trouble is having difficulty believing nearly anything from mainstream science these days, whether planetary, geophysical or medical, etc.. For example, concerning the one that flew by a week or so ago, a science news article I read described that it would be "terrifyingly close to Earth" at 1.2 MILLION miles. If 1.2 million is terrifying, I can't wait to see what they'll say about less than 20,000 miles. Bottom line, be careful about trusting the media. I should know since I'm been reporting local news for 24 years. And I can tell you, if I wrote the way "news" is being written today, I would have been fired long ago.

We are underestimating the diameter. It's probably 500m. It's not apophis that is the problem it's the number of small 100m objects that are orbiting it. Large asteroids usually have companions orbiting them. There are several examples of this for 800m range rocks.
The chelyabinsk blast was a smaller rock orbiting 2012 DA14 was a 50m rock that made a close pass but it had the 15m chelyabinsk asteroid orbiting it that did hit from a different direction because its orbit is likely large and elliptical.

The only realistic vivid recurring dreams I've had my whole life, is of a mushroom cloud off the coast here in Perth western Australia. I've had it 3 times, at 12yrs old, 32 and 3yrs ago. when I learned it's closest approach is above the west coast here...😳 Let's just say, I now treat life like I've got 7yrs left.. I can't understand how they're 100% sure it's going to fly by..at less than 20k miles in 7years from now, the window looks smaller than others on computer models, and this is massive! what if it changes 1mm 2yrs from now?.. they don't even know if it's metallic or a Rock rubble pile which must effect its gravitational pull. Below geo stationary orbit for a 350km wide asteroid is nothing to be relaxed about.. Don't Look Up" feels all to real. Apophis is big but Earth isn't densely populated enough to suffer that many casualties, even if a metropolitan area would be hit. 1000 megatons is a lot bigger than you think it dude. it isn't the initial impact that matters. the debris kicked up would be super heated and deadly over a long distance. and once it cools down, we'd face basically zero plant growth and dwindling food supplies for around a decade. so yes, a large percentage (in the billions) of humanity would die (probably from starvation.)
