I live in Post Falls, Idaho, over a far flung part of the Yellowstone magma chamber far below. Most folks don't realize how very, very large this magma chamber is. And yeah, most of it is very deep down and, for the most part, stable (for now, anyway). And I don't really worry about Yellowstone blowing up anytime soon, or at least in my lifetime, because this is a live volcano that "breathes", in that it is regularly releasing steam/super heated water from it's magma chamber. The surface of the current caldera, which surrounds Yellowstone Lake, rises and falls on a pretty regular basis. Pressure builds and the land of the caldera basin rises, then pressure is released, and the land subsides again. It's been doing this for hundreds of thousands of years and no significant changes have been found since it's been monitored on an hourly basis.
First time I saw Yellowstone was in 2013. I visited again last year and absolutely could notice way more steam vents and dead patches of trees surrounding them than I did ten years prior.
You see, unlike science fiction stories, in which nuclear weapons seem to be the cause of, and solution to, many geological catastrophes, science fact tells us that you aren't likely to trigger a Yellowstone cataclysm with a nuclear weapon. There is a possibility but you will need to drill down at least a mile and place the nukes which would be impossible to hide. There is also that the geological processes that Yellowstone undergoes every day release more energy than nuclear weapons so possible but highly unlikely
A supervolcano eruption is by far the worst natural disaster possible and if you want context on how horrible an eruption from a VEI8 volcano would be... Mt st helens was barely VEI5 so yellowstone would be over 1000x worse.
I live about 30 miles from Mt St Helens and had several small earthquakes before the eruption. The ash plume was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen, it didn't look real.
Two problems: 1, there is a string of supervolcanic explosions following what's now the Yellowstone hotspot going back 17 million years, not mentioned in the video. 2, the Yellowstone caldera system is a whole lot larger than the comparably tiny Prismatic Spring shown in the video, which I might describe as deceptive imagery.
@@lEGOBOT2565 When videos like this talk about Yellowstone, they tend to focus on the last three while ignoring the previous history, and yes, if you're talking about the size of the Yellowstone caldera while showing the Prismatic Spring, that's just wrong.

Volcanoes do not work in predictable ways and their eruptions do not follow predictable schedules. Even so, the math doesn’t work out for the volcano to be “overdue” for an eruption. In terms of large explosions, Yellowstone has experienced three at 2.08, 1.3, and 0.631 million years ago. This comes out to an average of about 725,000 years between eruptions. That being the case, there is still about 100,000 years to go, but this is based on the average of just two time intervals between the eruptions, which is meaningless.
