I went over the other side of that plateau to this reasonably sheltered spot but it was still gusting. My Hilleberg Soulo has stood up to 70mph+ winds in the Cairngorms. They're absolute bomber tents and I wouldn't trust anything else in such strong winds. Great video by the way 👍🏻
Right. So I'm just trying to get into camping & I'm exploring shelter options, including the Soulo. This video convinced me that the cost is worth it. I'll be ordering when my preferred color comes back in stock. Thanks, from the US.
Great video which gives a proper view of the tent in real conditions. For out-and-out strength this has to be the best there is, but it's just too much weight for my liking. My Luxe Hexpeak V4A (with third-party inner) has been fine in some serious wind and rain in Snowdonia this year at half the Soulo's weight (and a quarter of its price!), but I wouldn't pretend it's ultimately as strong. If I was going to make a habit of venturing out in stormy conditions it'd be a Soulo for me. As it is, I just have to keep a bit more of of a weather eye open and try to select sites with some natural shelter. It's difficult to compare tent performance unless you have them set up to the same standard in the same location facing identical conditions. Personal estimates of windspeed are unreliable, and one man's stiff breeze is another man's hoolie. Any tent will stand up in calm conditions, and no tent will survive exposure to a Force 12 hurricane. Much depends on the skill of the setter-upper, and the ground/stakes combination. I think we all find the compromise which suits us best, and stay safe so long as we operate within our equipment's limitations.
Thank you David. I also have a Luxe Mini Peak 2. I find it takes up quite a lot of ground space but is great for most conditions and the vestibule is huge. I agree with wind speed estimates so went off the weather reports. I don’t mind carrying the extra weight when it’s offers a bit more confidence in harsh conditions. It is a lot of money though. Nice movie! Hilleberg is the best! I use Unna when i hike alone and Staika when we are two. Lowly suroundings! I live in south of Sweden and I hope some day wisit Wales for hiking.

If you enjoy listening to a radio while camping, you might want to look into a company called "C. Crane." They specialize in radios that pick up broadcasts originating from very far away, I mean a hundred miles or more. They have a full line of them, including a handheld radio called the "CC Pocket," which only costs like sixty bucks. The CC Pocket's AM reception is good, but the FM reception is outstanding and might be better than you've ever heard before. They have other radios that are superior, but they cost more and most are probably too heavy for hiking.
Could buy more than ten vango nevis's for the price of one of these. The nevis held out against seriously strong winds perfectly well. I'm not a bit jealous 🤪
You probably could Martin 😂. I’m glad your Vango held up well mate. I had a banshee for a couple of years and it held up well but I never really tested it in high winds. This tent was my mid life crisis, a bit safer than a motorbike 🤞🏻. ATB Jiffy 👍🏻
Fantastic log - indeed great run out and test for your gear hats off I probably would have stayed with the car those trees where bending in half, always a good thing to do (CPD) the poles on the your tent where hardly moving during your well deserved panad, thank you for sharing and I will hopefully bump into you one day out on the hills of Snowdonia.

Great video Jiffy. You have been unlucky with the weather lately but it still makes fine viewing for us. Ive retreated from that very same spot twice in the past due to strong winds. Needs a good tent like that. My new Scarp tent has similar ‘crossing poles’ which are optional and Ive not used them yet. May need to soon. Atb Joss

Nice one, a great test for the tent. I have found using the storm pegs really gives that extra sense of security. They are bulky but well worth their weight in gold. Hopefully the other chap was ok. Cheers Si. The young lad will definitely remember his first experience of wild camping. I did warn him about the weather and advised him to look for somewhere sheltered. When I got to the plateau, I couldn’t find him so hopefully he went back down 🤞🏻. The problem I had with the pegs was the ground being a little soft. I could have done with some 2ft pickets 😉. Proper test for the soulo jiffy & it'll stand that all day long,can be a bit nervy setting up in high winds with the poles bending & all the flapping but once clipped up & pegged out it's nailed to the ground & ain't going no where.just come off a rough one on axe edge in the peak district myself.looking at getting up snowdonia pretty soon probably around the glyders area,looking forward to it.always a worry when you come across someone out in rough weather that don't seem to have the right gear but hope the kid got down safe.looked a good one despite the weather but all experience & character building.tfs mate.Andy.
It’s certainly built my confidence with the Soulo Andy. It was flapping all over the place when I was setting it up but was solid when clipped up. I do hope the young lad made it down ok. The Glyders are my favourite place mate. The wind makes you feel so much more alive 😁. TYFW ATB Jiffy 👍🏻
Which brand & model gaiters were you wearing? Have you any thoughts you'd care to share about them? Have you had any experiences with any other brand gaiters? I have & wear Kahtoola LevaGaiters, Tall with GTX (Gore-Tex), only 5.2 oz for the pair + the stuff sack; YKK zipper, no Velcro, a unique Instep strap, & a one year warranty, $84.95 + Tax. here in America & exceeded my expectation in terms of working like their supposed to. That looked like a Soto Windmaster Stove with a Triplex pot holder. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.
The gaiters are Rab Latok Goretex: rab.equipment/uk/latok-alpine-gaiter-gtx I haven’t had any issues with them at after 3 years of use. Yes, the cooker is a Soto Windmaster with the tri flex fitted. Best wishes from Wales 👍🏻🏴

Hi there. I knew nothing about camping until april of this year when i bought my first tent. Now im on youtube every night.. I must say i am particularly really enjoy your channel as you are doing a great job. Well done.. im going to buy the thermarest xtherm pad. Is your pad the rectangle regular 20" wide pad or is it the 25". I find it hard to stay on the 20" wide pad but at the same time it does keep the weight down... ATB from republic of Ireland.

I take it given the horrendous conditions you pitched in a sheltered dip in the terrain, which would explain the lorry like sound followed by the gusts. A very impressive tent btw. Apart from the hiileberg which other tents stand up to such weather?

Well that’s a test and a half! Question: if you’ve ever camped with this tent in the woods or when it’s not so windy, do you suffer with condensation at all?
You’ll get condensation in every tent. I’ve only had condensation forming on the inside of the outer (fly sheet), not on the inner. And yes, I have camped in woods with it. Take a look at my winter film from Jan 20. ATB Jiffy 👍🏻
daniel emmett I mention in my next video that, after some comments, I contacted Hilleberg to make sure this method is ok and Petra Hilleberg said she does it the same but not to store it compressed long term. I unpack it when I get home to air it out 👍🏻
Was the wind coming from all directions ? I've camped in high winds but always found a rock face or trees or even dirt mound to tent behind and block most of the wind.
Hi Patrick, most of the time the wind was coming from behind the rocks over the crest but the gusts were coming in from all directions. It took me a while to find a spot that sheltered me from the more persistent direction. Thank you for watching ATB Jiffy 👍🏻
Hello jiffy.ive got a soulo also and camped on y garn a few months ago.it did rain! But my question is how do you dry your tent in the cooler months.in summer an hour in the sun.but winter time?cheers!
I doubt the oex buckled under those conditions, if he’d pitch in any spot similar to where you did in a tent with such a low profile as that phox 2 has then I’m sure he’d be fine.
I hope so 🤞🏻. He told me that he was going to pitch by the Llyn, which was open and fully exposed to the wind. I went looking but couldn’t find him, so hopefully he found a sheltered spot or went back down. TYFW ATB Jiffy 👍🏻
I'm on a rooftop and it's windy up here a lot, today is 34Km winds. I need a tent to sit inside during winter as I can't smoke inside, I was wondering what you guys would suggest, I also have problems securing it as I can't use the pegs, I can nail down the corners to the 2x4 flooring but would rather not. So does anyone have any suggestions for a all season tent that wind proof? Peace and Blessings
Wild Camping Welshman weed and smokes, I got over twenty diseases and conditions and medications stopped working ten years ago so I gave them all up and just use herbs. I like to sit outside and watch the clouds, sky, Hawks and other birds, I can walk ok but not too far and as winter sets in if I slip I will fracture bones or break, so thought I'd ask someone who looks like they know what they're talking about, but this was first time seeing your video and coming to the channel. Hi there another great vlog! I spent weekend in the black mountains, walked in from Talgarth carrying 40 lb kit plus 2 ltrs of water. Currently I’m using either a ex army sleep system or a Buffalo 4s system , problem being they weigh a ton! I would value your comments on your sleeping bag whether it’s down and how does it cope with condensation and the weight etc. kind Regards Jim
Hi Jim, thank you for watching. I use a Rab Ascent 700. It is down with a pertex shell and hydrophobic down. I haven’t had a problem with condensation. It packs down small and is relatively light. I also use a Neoair Xtherm mat which helps with the warmth. If you are worried about down sleeping bags, an option could be to cover it with a lightweight bivvy bag like the alpkit hunka. Hi Alan, Petra Hilleberg got back to me and stated that she packs hers the same way but stores it rolled up in the original bag. So I think that it’s fine as long as it isn’t stored compressed for long periods of time. Thank you for pointing it out though so I could ask for some clarification. I would hate to damage the tent, especially considering the price 👍🏻
I’ve just come back from a wildcamp and a wet one. I’ve got a 20l dry bag but always fold my soulo or my unna before it goes in . I find that the best way . I hate seeing tents crushed in . In time it will damage the tent. I’m not having a go . It was a good vid two 👍⛺️

Wild Camping Welshman where was that lay-by you parked in? I can’t picture it on the road.
On Google Maps, it’s opposite the entrance to Glan Dena, on the A5, east of the Tryfan lay-bys 👍🏻

Nice one, a great test for the tent. I have found using the storm pegs really gives that extra sense of security. They are bulky but well worth their weight in gold. Hopefully the other chap was ok. Cheers Si. The young lad will definitely remember his first experience of wild camping. I did warn him about the weather and advised him to look for somewhere sheltered. When I got to the plateau, I couldn’t find him so hopefully he went back down 🤞🏻. The problem I had with the pegs was the ground being a little soft. I could have done with some 2ft pickets 😉. Proper test for the soulo jiffy & it'll stand that all day long,can be a bit nervy setting up in high winds with the poles bending & all the flapping but once clipped up & pegged out it's nailed to the ground & ain't going no where.just come off a rough one on axe edge in the peak district myself.looking at getting up snowdonia pretty soon probably around the glyders area,looking forward to it.always a worry when you come across someone out in rough weather that don't seem to have the right gear but hope the kid got down safe.looked a good one despite the weather but all experience & character building.tfs mate.Andy.
It’s certainly built my confidence with the Soulo Andy. It was flapping all over the place when I was setting it up but was solid when clipped up. I do hope the young lad made it down ok. The Glyders are my favourite place mate. The wind makes you feel so much more alive 😁. TYFW ATB Jiffy 👍🏻

I have & wear Kahtoola LevaGaiters, Tall with GTX (Gore-Tex), only 5.2 oz for the pair + the stuff sack; YKK zipper, no Velcro, a unique Instep strap, & a one year warranty, $84.95 + Tax. here in America & exceeded my expectation in terms of working like their supposed to.

Well done.. im going to buy the thermarest xtherm pad. Is your pad the rectangle regular 20" wide pad or is it the 25". I find it hard to stay on the 20" wide pad but at the same time it does keep the weight down... ATB from republic of Ireland.

I take it given the horrendous conditions you pitched in a sheltered dip in the terrain, which would explain the lorry like sound followed by the gusts. A very impressive tent btw. Apart from the hiileberg which other tents stand up to such weather?

Well that’s a test and a half! Question: if you’ve ever camped with this tent in the woods or when it’s not so windy, do you suffer with condensation at all?
You’ll get condensation in every tent. I’ve only had condensation forming on the inside of the outer (fly sheet), not on the inner. And yes, I have camped in woods with it. Take a look at my winter film from Jan 20. ATB Jiffy 👍🏻

Was the wind coming from all directions ? I've camped in high winds but always found a rock face or trees or even dirt mound to tent behind and block most of the wind.
Hi Patrick, most of the time the wind was coming from behind the rocks over the crest but the gusts were coming in from all directions. It took me a while to find a spot that sheltered me from the more persistent direction. Thank you for watching ATB Jiffy 👍🏻
Hello jiffy.ive got a soulo also and camped on y garn a few months ago.it did rain! But my question is how do you dry your tent in the cooler months.in summer an hour in the sun.but winter time?cheers!
I hang it up in my polytunnel until it’s dry mate. You could hang it over a bath perhaps. Failing that, wipe it dry with a few towels. 👍🏻

I doubt the oex buckled under those conditions, if he’d pitch in any spot similar to where you did in a tent with such a low profile as that phox 2 has then I’m sure he’d be fine.

I'm on a rooftop and it's windy up here a lot, today is 34Km winds. I need a tent to sit inside during winter as I can't smoke inside, I was wondering what you guys would suggest, I also have problems securing it as I can't use the pegs, I can nail down the corners to the 2x4 flooring but would rather not.
So does anyone have any suggestions for a all season tent that wind proof?

Why not just get a decent coat? Or do you plan on smoking for hours? If so, perhaps different cigarettes? If all else fails, quit 👍🏻
Wild Camping Welshman weed and smokes, I got over twenty diseases and conditions and medications stopped working ten years ago so I gave them all up and just use herbs. I like to sit outside and watch the clouds, sky, Hawks and other birds, I can walk ok but not too far and as winter sets in if I slip I will fracture bones or break, so thought I'd ask someone who looks like they know what they're talking about, but this was first time seeing your video and coming to the channel.

Hi there another great vlog! I spent weekend in the black mountains, walked in from Talgarth carrying 40 lb kit plus 2 ltrs of water. Currently I’m using either a ex army sleep system or a Buffalo 4s system , problem being they weigh a ton! I would value your comments on your sleeping bag whether it’s down and how does it cope with condensation and the weight etc. kind Regards Jim
Hi Jim, thank you for watching. I use a Rab Ascent 700. It is down with a pertex shell and hydrophobic down. I haven’t had a problem with condensation. It packs down small and is relatively light. I also use a Neoair Xtherm mat which helps with the warmth. If you are worried about down sleeping bags, an option could be to cover it with a lightweight bivvy bag like the alpkit hunka. Hi Alan, Petra Hilleberg got back to me and stated that she packs hers the same way but stores it rolled up in the original bag. So I think that it’s fine as long as it isn’t stored compressed for long periods of time. Thank you for pointing it out though so I could ask for some clarification. I would hate to damage the tent, especially considering the price 👍🏻
I’ve just come back from a wildcamp and a wet one. I’ve got a 20l dry bag but always fold my soulo or my unna before it goes in . I find that the best way . I hate seeing tents crushed in . In time it will damage the tent. I’m not having a go . It was a good vid two 👍⛺️
