    Was caught in a thunderstorm with five days and nights of continuous rain and hail with 3 friends in the bed of river Indus.
    We were all in early twenties and were saved by our kerosene stove that burned constantly, keeping the tent comfy and dry all the time.
    The roaring of wind outside your tent recreated those moments in my mind after almost 20 years!
    Stay blessed and safe ever!

    • @GoingSoloOutdoors
      @GoingSoloOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Just trying to share the experience as best I can. I don’t think I was in any real danger this trip as the low temperature that evening wasn’t too bad. However, I’ve had a tent fail on me in the past in strong winds, so I try to never underestimate the weather or how quickly it can change. I’m pretty confident in the durability of the Hilleberg that I use. I probably wouldn’t have even left the car with any of my other tents. If I did have to hike out because of a tent failure in rainy windy conditions, in the dark, that definitely could be dangerous. I also always carry a personal GPS SOS beacon (Garmin inReach) on me for these types of trips. I may be overly cautious, but I’m a father of two young children so no harm in that! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

    Welcome to the Land of my Fathers! I was brought up in Snowdonia, and this was my back yard. In my childhood, when all my friends were playing football, I would be out exploring my local mountains, solo, and I would estimate that 60% of the Welsh mountain weather was like that… character building! Great video, made me feel homesick!

    Wonderful video, thank you. Had a similar experience in Snowdonia many years ago but our tent collapsed and we sat huddled in two inches of water being battered by wet tent sides in absolute until predawn when we escaped. We stayed in a very nice bed and breakfast the next night. Anyway, this is a great video.

      Yeah it can really stink went your tent fails. I had a tent fail years ago also. It’s actually one of the reasons I got the Hilleberg. I wanted something that should hold up well in the wind if I find myself in less than ideal conditions and I can’t find a sheltered spot! It did the a great job this trip! I really enjoyed this video whereby you have a commentary. I'm an old codger who can't do hill walking anymore and am a little bit deaf. I do have a lot of silence in my life, and to watch a video in silence does make me switch to another channel where there is commentary to which I feel I can re-live my past. Some commentaries do have little humour which can make me chuckle. A laugh I feel does make me look forward to the new day. If you do feel that a reply would be welcome, please do so.

    Its funny that you say here how this is "different" and you don't normally talk in your videos. I hadn't watched any of your earlier silent ones, all the ones I watched, that came up in recommended, you were quite chatty! Also your cooking, you say here that you don't always cook. The best bits are your talking and cooking! Personally I love the videos in terrible weather, they're so exciting, my favourite so far is the one where it hailed and you hid behind a rock. I've watched that one 3 times now. Great work

    I wonder, where the lightnings are? Making it more exciting. Not in the borderline boring… Reminds me of a friend who were on a long drive one night, raining and alone on highway 55. From Mississippi to Chicago. Thunderstorms and lightnings suddenly appears few miles away around his car. He steps on the break to slowdown. A lightning strike half a meter away in front of his car. He regrets that he left his camera videoing the excitement. Could have been viral. And of course thanks our maker by saving him.

    Thank you for taking us along on your trek. I usually avoid cooking in my tent too. But, it doesn't look like you had a problem with ventilation. Nice to see someone else using a Spice Rocket. I like real cooking in the wild but hate doing dishes so I usually have freeze dried meals or dehydrate my own creations at home and the freezer bag cook on the trail. Dish washing . . . lick the spoon. Thanks again for the trek. Beautiful scenery! Thank you for leaving no trace.

    • @GoingSoloOutdoors
      @GoingSoloOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the weather is cooperative I will always leave the door open when cooking, but even with it closed I’ve found the ventilation to be pretty great in the Soulo! I am not a fan of cleaning the dishes either. If I have a dirty fry pan that can’t be easily wiped clean, I will usually just seal it in a ziplock bag and just wait till I get home to clean it. Making your own dehydrated meals is great! I’ve only ever done Beef jerky or a simple marinara and pasta with my dehydrator. It’s definitely the most convenient way to cook and I agree you can’t beat the ease of dish washing with just the lick of a spoon! Really appreciate you watching the video and taking the time to comment! Have a great week!

    Whow a real adventure and hello fron Scotland. When I was caught on a summit in gale force winds I was not calm enough to speak to camera and concentrate so well on frying a meal. Really you must be confident in your gear and your experience in using it. I got no sleep and was noise plus fear of pole breaking frazzled. So fair recognition a job well done. I liked that you put the stones back if I can go again Ill have to remember that.

      I was confident the tent could handle the wind despite being a little nervous with some of the stronger gusts. I read most of the replies B4 composing the following:
    This is the first time I've watched one of your videos. Checking, double checking, triple checking the guyline tension & the rocks on top of the pegs is what likely saved the day/night from having your tent blown down on top of you.
    What have you done to repair the seam leak? Did it work?
    Couple of tips. When the ground is soggy or I'm preparing for strong gusty winds, I gather up the rocks B4 I start pegging out my tent. This way, as soon as I put a peg in the ground I can reach out & place a heavy rock on top.
    2nd tip: When breaking camp, stretch out your guylines to their maximum length, then fold them in half, in half again, in half again, now tie a simple overhand knot which will keep your guyline in a neat lil bundle & ready for the next time.
    Yes, I'm now a subscriber & I rang the notification bell.
    My tent is a Hilleberg Enan, I'm 5'3" tall so I have plenty of room inside.
    Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.

    • @GoingSoloOutdoors
      @GoingSoloOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Welcome to the channel! Agreed, checking the guy lines is a must in conditions like this! Happy to report I only had to give them 2 good re-tensions on the side receiving the brunt of the wind. The 3mm line Hilleberg uses for their guys on the RL tents is fantastic. Getting the rocks ready ahead of time is a great tip! I had seen a few lying around that I was planning on using immediately but half of them I didn’t realize were half buried and couldn’t be used. Getting them together first just makes sense, and is a good habit to get into. If I couldn’t find enough stones this trip I would have had to move. No way the pegs would have stayed in otherwise. As for neatly putting the guy lines away. All I can say is that I use to put them away neatly, but I’ve gotten lazy. I use to do it when I got home though. Normally I setup the tent in a room, give it a good wipe down and let it dry. At this point I would normally tie the lines but I eventually stopped. I believe in one of my earlier videos you can see I actually have them tied. Haha back when I wasn’t lazy. To be honest I haven’t really found they get tangled too much. I definitely still have to do this on some of my larger lavvus that have really long lines though. Otherwise it’s a tangled mess. After this trip, when cleaning the tent at home, I was able to seam seal the opening in the base of the zipper on both sides. It seems to have solved the problem! really excited for my Enan to arrive! Excited to have a lighter Hilleberg for some longer distance treks! How do you like it? Thanks for watching the video! I really appreciate the thoughtful comments, tips, and the support! ATB

    Have a leaking hilleberg myself, the anjan 2. One of the porch elastic attachment to hold the door open leaks. A new tent , the Akto , supposeldy leaks at the botom of the top vent, not used it yet though. Got an akto to be different as everyone else and their granny has a Soulo, most likely because they are chicken.

    • @GoingSoloOutdoors
      @GoingSoloOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      I was able to fix this leak with a little seam sealant at the end of the zipper. Everyone does seem to have a Soulo but it’s just a great all around tent for UK weather. I also had a small leak on an elastic loop for the tent fly on my Unna but I have since fixed that as well. Kinda stinks these little leaks had to be fixed but these tents still perform better than any of my other tents. Fortunately my Nammatj and Enan haven’t had any issues though 👍. The Hilleberg is overkill on most of my camps, but I’ve always told my wife you don’t need it until you need it. On this trip I was happy to have it as I’ve had other tents fail on me in bad weather and that’s no fun. I’ve also been able to pitch it on only rocks (like in my Jurassic coast video) and because the floor is so durable I don’t really worry about it! Llyn Bochlwyd (The lake of the grey cheek), named after an old stag who swam across the Llyn to escape hunters. Lovely spot and ringed by the cliffs of y Gribin, Glyder Fach and Tryfan. Lots of fun times scrambling and climbing the classic rock climbs there

    GS, mine leaked in exactly the same place,after many hours of driving horizontal rain. There is a small gap where the zip ends and that’s where I think it comes in. I’ve dabbed some seam sealant there and sprayed some fabsil over the seams in that area. “Touch wood” it’s been fine since. I also had a leak, which is well known, on my Akto which was resolved by a bit of seam sealant. Hilleberg really should address this because it has been brought up with them in the past. It is a small fix but if these tents are advertised as not needing some sealing, they shouldn’t. It doesn’t put me off because of the quality compared to others but I do think they need to clamp down on well known issues. ATB Jiffy 👍

      Yeah it’s definitely something that should be addressed by Hilleberg. I actually recently was talking to Chris from MCMoutdoors. He has been having the same issues with that gap at the zip end also. He contacted Hilleberg about it, long story short, they basically said they have no plans to deal with it as of right now. Which was a bit surprising of a response. After this video I did a couple coats of seam sealant to fill the gap and mine hasn’t had the issue anymore either in similar driving rain. It’s still kinda ridiculous though, since it’s something they could also easily fix themselves before sending the tent out. Especially since they are already aware of the issue. I agree, I’m still crazy about my Hilleberg tents and it was an easy fix but their response did surprise me! Maybe one day they will take care of it. All the best Jiffy!

      @@GoingSoloOutdoors I hope they aren’t being complacent about it because it will have a negative effect on their image / reputation, as times go by and all of us highlight it. It’s an easy fix, which they could easily do at the point of production. I know Petra reads comments on the Hilleberg Owners Facebook group because she likes and sometimes comments on there. Fingers crossed, she gets the team together and sorts these issues out. Oh and my Nammatj delivery didn’t work out because there was a stock issue so I’ve got a Nallo 2 on route. We will see how it goes with that. Addictive but great for your health! 😂. Speak soon mate 👍

      @@WildCampingWelshman completely agree! It’s an easy fix for them, even if they just seal it like many already have. Hope they make it right. I looked forward to seeing you use it!
