      Jane, thank you for watching my channel!! Freezer paper is what butchers and cooks use to wrap meat and other things in to store in the freezer. One side has a wax coating which works great for your palette. It is thicker than normal kitchen wax paper. It can be found in grocery stores here but n the section with aluminum foil, wax paper, Saran Wrap etc.. Once you are finished using the palette, you just throw it away! Easy clean up! 😁

    Was that water sprayed on the cold wax and oil? I am familiar with the technique as it relates to acrylics, just not so when dealing with oils and cold wax. Perhaps your oils were water-based? I know that's a thing, less chemicals to clean up, just water.

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dinese, I use Gamsol-odorless mineral spirits to spritz on the painting, which will lift the top layer to reveal the history below. We never use water oil paintings, the Gamsol is made by Gamblin. A fun technique! Thanks for watching!

    • @DineseBeckert
      @DineseBeckert 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LisaBBoardwine ah! And yes, water and wax don’t mix anymore than oil and vinegar, unless you add a thickening agent.
      So the technique is similar in its effects with wax as water sprayed on acrylic, it will remove the top to reveal the colors below, or the canvas itself! Thanks!

  • @dianehansma1725
    @dianehansma1725 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Loved these 3 parts...very soft look, you are so creative! I would love to see more abstracts with just acrylics! When your cold wax and oils are dry....do you spray or varnish your work when finished? Thank you!!

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Diane, thank you!! I plan on doing more acrylics on video soon! I love both mediums! You can varnish them if you want to but you don’t have to. Since you are building up the cold wax in each layer you wouldn’t have to varnish. But you can use GamVar as a final varnish or even a coat of the clear cold wax -once the painting is completely dry.

    Wow this is so beautiful. The colours are so well blended in - with many layers. I have two questions. The big oil crayon makes a very nice effect. Is it possible to use that together with acrylic paint over. I also wonder what the Spritz water is. It makes very exciting effects. Don't think we have that in Europe. Is it possible to use alcol ink instead.? Thank you for all the beautiful paintings you share with us.

    The history, mystery, and mark making creates a lovely painting. You make it look easy. Do you have in mind where the light and dark areas will be in your composition before you begin? It appears as though 'light' is coming up through the layers. The orientation that you chose is the one I would have chosen also. I hope you'll share the finished painting after you look at this for a few days. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your talent.

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Becky, Thank you for your comment! I really don't usually have anything in mind at the beginning, because I may turn the painting completely around if I think it needs it, but that being said, once I start layering, I may push the lights and darks in a specific area when I start to see a certain orientation that I like. Thank you for watching the videos!

    This has changed so much from video one ~ unless you look deeply, the red is almost gone! Very nice 👍🏼

    Hi Lisa I have just finished my first attempt at cold wax art and I feel this a great opportunity for me to break away from landscapes. I love your tutorials and I am inspired and I can learn a lot from you. Can I ask what is the paper you use scrunched up? Is it a baking paper or something else? I am in the UK so no wallmart here. Also is there any other cold wax's that you have found that work just as well as the Gamlin official wax? It is expensive.
    Also if you work on a block or board/canvas that has a thickness do you paint the sides? How exactly do you leave it with the view to hanging it or selling?

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good for you! It is a fun medium which allows for so much play and experimentation! So glad you like my videos and channel! The paper I use is plain, cheap tissue paper, gift wrapping thin, tissue paper! In addition to Gamblin cold wax medium, I also use Dorlands, it is very creamy! Not sure if you can purchase in the UK, but it is also a great cold wax medium! Have fun!

You do not have to varnish these painting because you are building each layer with wax, however if you want to varnish Gamblin makes a product called GamVar in gloss, satin and matte finishes , or you can cover a dry painting with a coat of clear wax and lightly buff. This is very exciting and I will be following your website very closely. Do you ever mix cold wax and acrylic paint together? ... so, if you don’t uses all your mixed color and cold wax can you save it ?

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tina, Yes you can save it!! It will keep for several days- usually. You can cover your palette with saran wrap or wax paper each day after your studio session, or buy some of the plastic little containers with lids and store your extra paint in these. If it dries out a bit either add a little wax and mix or spritz with a small amount of gamsol. Thanks so much!!

    So how do you protect it like can one glaze it ?
    Can you say use it as background and paint oil on it.
    I love it but totally new to it

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John, You do not have to varnish this at the end- like traditional oil paintings. However, if you choose to "varnish" it you can use a clear coat of cold wax, when the piece is completely dry, then lightly buff with a soft cloth, or Gamblin now makes a product called GamVar- in Gloss, Satin and Matte, that you can put over the painting when completely dry. It is such a fun medium to work with!Thanks for watching!!

    YOU ARE AMAZING....THIS IS THE KIND OF PAINTINGS I LIKE.....COULD I DO THIS ON A CANVAS....I KNOW THERE IS A LOTS OF PRESSURE FROM THE BRAYER AND SCRAPING....TFS....

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ann, this is done best on a rigid surface. The stretched canvas has flexibility and does “give” when pushed. However, Gamblin makes a product calledGalkyd Gel which is suppose to help with the flexibility -if you choose to work on canvas. I prefer panels or paper. Thanks for watching!!!
