    Hi Lisa,
    Im so Happy I came across your channel,, I have spent most the day watching your videos...Im an artist which uses nature as my palette. clays wood etc. and I recently did an encaustic course but I'm loving the cold wax and pigments, all types ..its giving lots of ideas...what i love about this is that it doesn't need to be spayed etc.... Do you buff it at the end? and also because of the wax it has to be open framed(no glass)? is there anything the customer needs to know about the maintenance of the piece....? thanks a mill for your sharing of knowledge...

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomasina, thank you for watching my channel! Oil and cold wax medium is so fun to work with! You can buff it after it is completely dry, you can cover it with a layer of clear cold wax, let it dry, then buff with a very soft cloth. The look is meant to be a matte finish, but if you want a sheen or shine you can use GamVar, made by Gamblin, in satin, matte or gloss, for the desired sheen. it can be framed under glass after it has completely dried, especially the paper works. Just make sure to set the glass back so it doesn't touch the painting.

    I'm guessing that you could scrape dry pastels and use them like the pigments and pan pastels? Graphite powder? Also, I use oil pastels as a final touch-up to make some accent marks to finished pieces. Thanks Lisa!

      Bob, Absolutely! I use pastels a lot in my work. Also, the graphite and powdered charcoal work wonderfully with the cold wax! Pan pastel is another great material we can incorporate into our paintings! Thanks for tuning in to my channel!!

    Hi Lisa,
    I adore your channel..!
    As I’m from Ireland I find it hard to get my hands on gamsol... I know it’s like odorless white spirits but that doesn’t give the desired effect when I spray & scrape off...
    can I use turpentine ?
    I bites through oil paint better but I’m just not sure about using it with cold wax..
    Thanks so much .. 🌺

      Lorraine, Thanks so much for watching my channel! Sorry you cannot find the Gamsol in Ireland. I have not used turps with the cold wax but I would not be afraid to try it! I used to use turps all the time when I painted strictly with oils, before I started using cold wax. But give it a try and see what you think! I will give it a try too!! Thanks for tuning in!

      I found that also. However, I tried it with Spike Lavender essential oil and it really works well. I could also imagine that Limonene oil would work efficiently too.

    I have 2 questions: How long does it take to dry with the cold wax and do you use a fixative or varnish to keep its longevity and vibrancy? Thank You🙏😅

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  ปีที่แล้ว

      According to how thinly or thickly you apply the layers determines how fast or slowly it dries. Usually it takes about 3 weeks but could take more.

    Never having used cold wax, I was wishing you would show what it looks like. How does it come? How is it used? Are the oil crayons the only oils used? I see you using a scraper to paint with, which implies that the paint does not come from a tube and is not in a bowl, but somehow is on a flat pallet? I do wish you would back up occasionally and show your setup and not just the individual painting being worked on. I am basically an acrylic painter and I do dye on silk. But am interested in your materials also.

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kathy, thank you for watching and for your questions and comments. I am using oil paint from tubes and I mix it with cold wax on a palette, which I do show in some videos. I use a 50:50 ratio of wax and paint. I do use R&F oil pigment sticks which can be used throughout the painting. I also use other mark making tools- art crayons, graphite, markers, etc...Thanks for your suggestions, I am glad you are interested in my materials! Some do cross over and work in my Acrylic/Mixed Media Painting as well!

    How do you seal pigment/pastel on the top most layer of the painting? I find that adding a layer of cold wax over these areas often changes the color and texture of the underlying pigment layer.

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Annie, The powdered pigment and pastel are put into a wet layer, either of paint/wax or just clear wax, then I brayer over them to embed. You are right, you can cover over the top with clear wax- but it will change the color and texture. I have never had a problem with just embedding it, but I use these touches very sparingly as well.

    I am glad that I came across your channel! Great inspiration... May I ask how long it takes for a piece like this to dry?

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching my channel! The drying time depends on several factors. How thickly or thinly the layers are applied, how much wax is used and the temperature and humidity affect the drying time. But usually within 2-3 weeks it should be dry.

    • @lullowitch

    Have just come across this cold wax and wonder what happens to it over time. Does it go brittle?

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Music, Cold wax paintings dry hard once they set up. The cold wax medium actually helps the oil paint to dry faster! Paintings created with oil/cold wax are very durable, unlike hot wax(encaustic) which is subject to temperature, etc.. The cold wax medium will stay good for a very long time, if you keep the container closed. Thanks so much for watching my video!

    Is this like pigment you bind with oil? Are you wearing a mask?

    • @LisaBBoardwine
      @LisaBBoardwine  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Look4Good, yes this is dry powdered pigments that are used to create a variety of painting media such as oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels and encaustic. Dry pigments are often used in mixed media and for different techniques in various media. I sometimes wear a mask, but not always. My recommendation is for each artist to take their own health and safety into consideration-- always. Every artist has to be their own judge of what to use or not use when experimenting with art supplies. Be safe!!
