      Also VR Wire II is a product which is genius because it allows for a sliding along a wire effect as well as pulleys and along with Turn Signal, it really ends the cable twisting issue.

    Karl, the reason your cable is getting mangled is due to the cable not being given enough slack. You have a cable tie on the back of your headset which appears to be very tight to hold it in place, which is fine, but you also have the cable tightly held on your last pulley as well. That is putting a ton of tension between those two points. What you should do is get a key ring(the round metal kind you separate with your fingernail) and attach it to the final pulley. Run your cable through the key ring and THEN you can cable tie it to your headset. The key ring will allow your cable to slide back and forth and also twist freely without tension. You can test this yourself by holding any cable in your hands. Grab either side with your index finger and thumb and try to twist the cable. You'll see that it starts to form a tight loop almost immediately which puts a lot of strain on the cable. Now try it again but this time, hold it tight on one end and let the other end rest on your palm. Even though you're twisting it just as hard, the cable has the ability to move back and forwards freely, which allows the cable to twist more without buckling. You still need to be aware of how many rotations you are doing, but I find it super easy to just let the headset spin itself out before and after playing. just hold the cable over your head and allow the headset to hang an inch above the ground and the cable will correct itself. Do this before and after you play and your cable will last months, maybe even years.

    • @KarlGosling
      @KarlGosling  4 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      Thanks for the lengthy input! :) lol
      The tie on the back is lose and I do exactly as you describe at the end of each session letting it hang to untwist (even midway through some times) but you make a good point about the final pulley, I knew why it was happening (you can see it pull tight) but I hadn't thought to loosen that last pulley to allow a greater length of free play... I'll give it a try! :)

      There are cable pulleys that allow twisting.

  • @8Beet
    @8Beet ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There is another cieling cable solution (called VR Wire II) -- this does a much better job at keeping your cable suspended while reducing the amount of tension/twisting.
    The cable rests on cirling wheel system that is also hooked to a pulley system. The cable will instead roll along the wheels.
    It does have tension near the pc connection though it can be somewhat adjusted (this is a requirement with any system that suspends the cable since you don't want to end up bending any of the connectors) though since it's not as close to the HMD it takes a very long time to twist it to the point you create kinks given it's closer to the source instead of the output. I've been loving the system over stuff like the kiwi. It also looks much nicer and easier to take down if you don't want to have a permanent suspension like me.

    • @johnhertel3931
      @johnhertel3931 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the problem is that wireless with the current technology is essentially impossible to do well. Remember, if you want to avoid getting sick, you have to get all your rendering done and the image transmitted in a single frame, so at 90hz you have like 12 ms. I have the vive wireless setup, and its not great, because the data transmission takes like 5ms. Thats just the limit of the bandwidth. So now you have to render the scene in 6 or 7 ms instead of having 11. So your settings have to be noticeably reduced etc. I am hoping a 3080 will give me enough speed to go back to the wireless, but for now i am back to using wired, its just a lot better fidelity.

    Good discussion.
    Turnsignal works OK. After a few sessions with over-head management, I decided that the cable is just a write off, it is a maintenance item that will probably have to be replaced. I feel not getting tangled or tripping on the cable is worth probably having to replace it at some point.
    When the cable was across my floor, I was constantly stepping on it and standing up, almost yanking the headset off. I figured that would damaged the headset or cable at some point.

    I'm glad I had an old network cable that you can roll up into a small plastic thing with a spring laying around. Free ceiling cable management basically. But yea, I always have to be careful with twisting it. I tend to keep a bit more of the cable on my side of the "pulley" so it doesn't get twisted as quickly, and I always pay attention to my floor boundaries, turning 180 degrees at most before repositioning myself. With a cable, controller turning is still the best option to keep from damaging stuff.

  • @Deathano0bGaming
    @Deathano0bGaming 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I always left the cable on the floor and didn't care about turning too much cause if you feel the cable getting tight at all you can just turn the other direction. I got very used to just switching the direction and have never really had a bad playing exerperince because of it you just kinda get used to it and stop caring.

    We're all out here with $5000+ gaming setups and we fret over small things like a $15 cable replacement every now and then.
    An interesting idea I had was to leave some more slack and turn your cable into a sort of spindle (very loosely) as if you were going to pack it up so when you start turning, the spindle just gets a bit smaller or larger depending on which direction you turn in.

    I will say though - Even if you don't rotate around freely, I think they're still worth having? Without the pulleys, if I crouch down in a game, the cord would go under my feet. Then if I standup, it catches under my food, and YANKS really hard on the headset.

    Better solution would be to get a high quality slip ring with enough commutators for the connection pin out then just solder in some male/female connections to it (you can sometimes find them prewired for things like USB3). This would allow for complete 360 dregree rotation of the connection without any line twist. Draw back is depending on the number of connections they can get alittle bulky which might be a issue for some line pulleys.

    I have had a ceiling setup for years now. The problem with having it on the floor, is the risk of tripping over it and how it might destroy more than just the cable.
    Being without a cable with the Quest is probably the best solution, but then, it becomes uncomfortable... which might be solved with the Halo Headstrap replacement you can get for it. The Vive DAS Frankenquest mod does make it a bit more comfortable as well, but not as much as the Rift, Rift S or Index.
    With my Index I have come to find that it seems the cable being so thin, light and flexible on the Rift might actually cause this problem, because that is useful overall... but not when it comes to this, because it twists up so easily. But the comparatively bulky Index cable seems to be much less inclined to twist up. Its likely to avoid twisting as you turn around because of this, but it might still happen. Still I have not ever ended up with the mess of a cable above my as with my Rift, where the cable and the pulley is all twisted up.
    Some games I end up preferring to play on my Quest using Virtual Desktop because of this.

    I wonder if you could take a fairly heavy wire -maybe cut the ends off a beefy extension cord- and cable-tie it every few inches along the length of the Oculus cable. It wouldn't eliminate the cable's ability to twist, but would reinforce the Oculus cable. You would also have the added benefit that any twisting at all would be immediately visible.

    • @TunaSub1gf
      @TunaSub1gf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe even braid some wire starting at the last pully and using heat shrink to reinforce it? I know that old guitar hero cables at a Game store had heavy duty metal tubing on it going from one end to the other, completely stoped it from twisting and the cable would just loop up.

    Sadly alot of games now use OpenXR instead of SteamVR on WMR headsets meaning that when you launch a game it kicks you out of SteamVR and into WMR instead so turnsignal or cableguardian dont work. Yes, you can force SteamVR but as developers use the OpenXR more and more many of the control schemes fail to work properly and interfere with SteamVR overlay buttons (such as joystick press) however you can remap the controls IF the devs give the ability to map them. If you just need to avoid trippin on the wire & twisting just mount the a simple pully on the wall at ear height and secure the cable from the head set with zipties like you did but with some minor difference
    Use a thicker hair tie the is a rolled fabric and secure the tie while it’s in the fold of the hair tie.
    The extended cable will have one ceiling pully to eliminate slack from the wall pully
    The position you would want the cable to finally leave the head strap is an area where a person would wear a pony tail or feel the top of your skull and move towards the back there will be a spot the curves around into a divot at the start of that curve is where you need the cable to free from the equipment and into the pully system the angel will help with minimal conflict based on your proportions and the wall pully at eat level will be the range to let you spin a couple times slowing making the cable noticeable to guide you based on how much you spin
    The pully holding the slack will need to be tight and have minimal slack for both sides this will give you a measurement of changing your rotation count and how strong or weak you can set the resistance to get the right feel without overly abusing to much at a time

    I wonder why there isn`t allready a Wifi or faster then bluetooth attachable module to the VR Mask, transmitting the signals to a USB receiver at the PC for gaming, because cables disturb walking around in a room. In the civil sport drone piloting are headsets that transmitting multi K high resolution feedback from the drone cam miles away. Therefore should be possible for normal VR headsets too.
    I just raise that question becaue they could apply that on the many VR masks without players disturbed by cables.

      There is mate, HTC have had one out for a couple of years for the original Vive, but it's heavy, expensive and slightly laggy.
      Bandwidth is the main problem, 2880×1600 @ 90hz and upwards with a low latency is very demanding, current mainstream Wifi is not fast enough and Bluetooth is not even in the same ball park.

    Oculus really needs to release an official wireless option (direct from PC to headset). Virtual Desktop has a bit too much latency, dedicated hardware would be much better.

      @@KarlGosling Thank you for reply! Oh snap! That´s a bummer then :( Optical cables are probably quite expensive (even when there is probably just one string). Oh well, next time I will buy something wireless (but i will need 5Ghz wireless router to play from PC).
      Cable from Rift S seems tough, but loves to tangle. I had to give it´s shape "O" how it came in package and taped it. Now I shouldn´t damage it with my stomping or so on. Oh well, but otherwise I´m very happy with it - it has great performance, reactive and it has no problems even when i play in near darkness, just in ambient light from monitor. I think those cables are one of the reasons they discontinued it. But probably during the lifetime of my Rift S they will come with more advanced models.
      I´ve just noticed - deformities on the cable itself are normal? (it has those nicks).

    Not a solution to the twisting issue but an idea that might save you money. Chop the cable at the back of the headset and strip the ends of each cable and screw them into a plug connecter, when you trash a cable you can unplug them from the headset and buy a reel of cable you can cut to legnth for a fraction of the cost of an official repair. A lot of headphone modders do this to help prolong their expensive wired headphones.

    Thanks so much for making this video. Uploaded. Subscribed.
    I swear I have seen a piece of tech that can address this and allow us to spin while not allowing the wire to twist and not interfering with this process.... now to remember where I've seen it and then to hunt it up and see if I can apply it to this process.
    (On the side, keep up with me, come chill with me and vrchat, in 2 months or so I will have the index and another month I will have shaken off of the noob by then,..
    Then I will be in need of directions for activities.
    Keeping up with me will also keep you dialed in if I discover a fix for this issue, which I probably will or I will conceptualize some tech of which will be poached and then applied if someone else didn't think of it already, which they probably did... Either way, it won't be long before we have this cable issue, when it's twisting, macgyvered as well.
    On a fishing pole there's something called a spin reel. That prevents the line from twisting as it reels out in reels in. I swear I've seen this for other things besides a fishing pole and I am still hunting.
    (If steam were to employ me, this would have already been invented and be part of the package... it's the sort of thing that never would Escape me during quality assurance testing processes but of course nobody wants to pay me for that sort of thing when they can get it for free from everyone's feedback. Again, absurd waste and trivializing...
    Both of the likes of me and the majority who are enslaved through this quality assurance and user interface testing and feedback process. It's a new form of slavery that needs to be addressed on a global political level and an end to it must beyond our near horizon.)

    There is an easy way to prevent the twist problems, set the pulleys after figuring it out. I have mine set around the ceiling, but the main rear retractors, I use 1 static, BUT, behind that mount is another that attaches in front that has 2 pulleys in series. What you get from that is the same retraction, but the initial point is a soft retraction that allows the cable less tension and the ability to turn and twist over a greater length.
    The entire headset cable of mine is in the retraction cables. Years later, no issues...
