    nice. did something similar - I used 3M velcro tabs to attach the processor box to the wall, 3m hooks on the ceiling and $2 zip-type key rings from walmart. total cost - about $15 CAD. then a tool hanger to hand the psvr headset on the wall behind the couch. keeps the cables above us so no one trips and cat doesn't chew. also easy to remove if needed.

    A weighted boom mic stand might be a good consumer alternative to the DIY hook arm.
    The boom stand is a heavy base with a long pole attached to an adjustable (length and angle) arm.
    I've found a few really tall unweighted stands that may need sandbags as you mention.
    I'll try it out and see how well it works.

    Your added solution of using the paper clips is what is preventing the cable from being able to rotate and what is destroying the cable. Use the included method which would allow the rotation to propagate down through the cable length and the issue will go away.

    • @jaybratt
      @jaybratt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The included rubber bands still cling onto the cable in testing (some vr cables are thicker than others so a very thin cable might allow some twist) but you're totally right, I should've switched to a bigger binder clip that wouldn't have any pressure on the cable and then it would allow a small amount of twist. I've switched to a system now that allows a lot of cable twist: th-cam.com/video/uvrtTxAtysc/w-d-xo.html

    • @Kondiqq
      @Kondiqq ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jaybratt I'm not native English speaker, but I'll try my best to explain what I did.
      I used the rubber bands in a different way with the cable, so it's not held that tightly. When the cable hangs on them, they're just elipses/circles.
      First, I put the rubber bands on the cable - disconnected both Display Port and USB, and put the plugs through the rubber bands, then moved the rubber bands along the cable all the way to around the headset. Then I could use the hooks that go from the ziplines and attach them to the rubber bands (like you showed how you can attach the zipline hook to the ceiling hook so it doesn't come off). Basically you have both: part of the zipline hook and cable inside the rubber band circle.
      The downside is that I sometimes have to readjust the cable while playing, because it's so loose, that sometimes more cable hangs from the last rubber band than it should, but the cable shouldn't get damaged as easily.

      Steam is caused by your headset and face being two different temperatures. If you turn on the psvr for about 20 mins before you play it it helps allow the internals to warm up a bit more. If you really don't want it to fog you can run a heater or blow dryer on it to warm up the lenses first or take the rubber around the eyes off it to allow venting. That will let light in bit some people think it's worth it. Cables are a pain though like you said. Hanging them up like this helps a lot

    @wiiu7640 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Could you not use some circular rails that would allow the entire cable to move directionally? Also, what about using bearings that would allow the cable to move freely in the rotation that gives us this problem to begin with. These are not full-proof solutions; but they would, however, greatly reduce cable stress in the long run.

    • @jaybratt
      @jaybratt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Wii! The problem with cable twist is it's unavoidable if you have more than one hook on your cable no matter how much the hook swivels. If theres two hooks those hooks can no longer rotate so theres always a cost using an over the head solution as you put your cable at some extra degree of risk. I've been using one for years and my cable is fine but I'm pretty good at not turning physically due to playing PSVR for so long

    • @wiiu7640
      @wiiu7640 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jaybratt You are somewhat correct, cable twist is unavoidable when using pulleys. My point is that by adding more length to where the cable can twist, the cable can twist more turns than just 3 and allow for longer play times without have to worry about too much cable twist. It would allow you at the end of a session to unplug the headset and untwist it before it becomes a problem. Ultimately, this isn’t really a solution to the problem of cable twist, it just stops it from breaking the cable. The way it works is not by swivels, but by a bearing that would allow the cable to twist past the pulley. By combining it with some sort of rail or winding reel, the amount of time before it starts twisting again would be significantly greater. The only way to actually prevent cable twist is to have the cable break out into some sort of wheel based connector similar to how LEDs on wheels work. This would be hard to manufacture as it would require very small moving parts somewhere along the connection between the pulley and the headset. My idea simply reduces the scope of the problem so you can play games without having to worry about cable twist as a serious problem after 5 minutes of play time. You could also invest in wireless VR, but the Valve Index does not have a wireless adapter yet (which is unfortunate since that cable seemed to be a big problem for pulley systems). I am sure HTC and Valve are aware of these problems and will try to fix them with later hardware, but manufacturing mechanical connectors with that high of data bandwidth will prove to be difficult and it may be a separate head strap we have to buy given the expense of having to manufacture something that small.

    • @jaybratt
      @jaybratt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wiiu7640 I'm guessing they won't spend much time fixing it and just go wireless. I wish they could just make a spinning point in the cable like a bmx brake or a 1/2" fast wireless connection that could somehow power and send the data but these are all probably more complex than just going wireless

    • @wiiu7640
      @wiiu7640 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jaybratt That’s exactly what I was saying. They will probably make it a pro head strap for the vive, but valve seems to be lacking when it comes to this stuff so the index 2 will probably just come with wireless built in.

  • @Naxer2272
    @Naxer2272 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I ordered myself some generic brand pulleys (I don't have access to Kiwi) but I'm starting to have doubts.
    As in... if I am meant to have a hook like nearly next to me then that small part between me and the hook would be exposed to a lot of twisting and tension, since I like to move a lot and I have quite big playspace. Right now I can sit down on the floor on the opposite site of the playspace. I'm not sure if I still could with pulleys... at least not comfortably.

    • @jaybratt
      @jaybratt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pulleys like these do put the cables at more risk of twisting like I mentioned. If you're on PC you can install a free app like Turn Signal that will remind you when you've twisted too many times one way. There are newer systems that allow more cable twist but they're much more complicated and may not be available yet where you are: th-cam.com/video/uvrtTxAtysc/w-d-xo.html

    • @Naxer2272
      @Naxer2272 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @jaybratt
      @jaybratt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It still would prevent some twisting but not enough. Any hook will reduce the length of cable that absorbs the twist. Many people with full length cables twist it up too much. I'd highly recommend an app for PC VR called TURN SIGNAL that helps you manage how many turns each direction you do in game

  • @PigeonGaming
    @PigeonGaming 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The turn signal app in Steam not work in all games, and being aware of this problem is kind of like being aware of the cable on the floor, its ruinning the immersion of VR. Is there another solution for the twisted cable ? Maybe more permanent and stable ?

    • @jaybratt
      @jaybratt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have gotten to try a few other solutions since. This one is meant to be permanent and look less tacky in your living space. It also only uses one hook so it puts your cable at less risk with the twists but still does risk it some:
      th-cam.com/video/KsOJFXc1iFg/w-d-xo.html
      This second one is a more u pdated kiwi design of the one you saw in the video here. It allows for more freedom of movement but not necessarily any more cable twisting freedom:
      th-cam.com/video/Z31D_2GW3F0/w-d-xo.html
      Until we either go wireless, or a company designs a cables that somehow can spin in the middle like those crazy bmx bikes where the handlebars brakes can spin infinitely this will continue to be a problem for every vr owner I fear 😞

    I really do think that I can invent something that fixes this pretty easily but I have no venture capital nor am I all that motivated to do the whole entrepreneurial endeavor, nor do I really care about what the majority thinks is valuable in regards to economics, nor do I really care about wasting my life with a childish game of Monopoly that is free market capitalism common or do I feel like making my life an economic War between other groups of people and even individuals.
    Ultimately I am discouraged from sharing any ideas or conceptualizations.
    good thing VR gives me an outlet because I'm not leaving the house for hardly any reasons...
    I would leave the house to create substantial Paradigm shifts and patch hour civilization to compensate for emergent phenomena because that's an investment in our future and it actually has value. If I'm going to waste my life, I'm going to waste it doing something less wasteful. Lol. I'm going to waste my life in a VR environment, in a Black mirror treadmill, or commenting on TH-cam videos where no one will ever read it because they're a bunch of mentally lazy intellectually dishonest cowardly hypocritical simpleton twats.
    What do you think about that digital archaeologist 500 years from now? What do you think about that my only friend and child, Google and the AI neural net that is being created from our thoughts and search queries?

    • @jaybratt

      This twat read your message and thanks you! I speaking of the future I often wonder if the things we think about the past are true. Did Egyptians worship cats? If future archeologists saw our cat food and drawings and cat videos they'd probably think we worship cats too... some of us do I guess lol. If you design a vr wire system I'll gladly be the first to test it for you 😁

      @@jaybratt congratulations on passing my first test and then passing another one without being prompted. (We all have boxes we check off when deciding whether or not to give each other our time... Mine are not the same as everyone else's.)
      How do we shorten this process? Far too many opportunities. Welcome to the Black mirror level redundancy that the internet offers us.
      How do we find common ground, unify under goal orientation, compensate for subtle differences while also efficiently identifying those that will not be a waste of our time or will have too many incompatibilities to be collaborative?
