Working in Lithgow Loco a 49 was the first engine I ever drove. A chargeman Chubby Perry (still alive today) said me "you're a railway enthusiast have you had a drive of an loco yet" to which I answered "no" and he replied "well it's about bloody time you did!" So Chubby taught me how to drive, do hand signals, safely couple and uncouple and stow engines in the paddock which in Lithgow was the old roundhouse area, work the turntable. If I was on back shift and he was the chargeman for the shift we'd give the loco shed crew a hand shunting locos from the fuel point for diesels and sand shed for electrics round the depot to where they needed to be. I drove 46's, 85's, 86's 49's, 48's, 80's, 81's and 82's. I worked in the steam shed which was at the far eastern end of the depot washing locos.
There was an accident at Delec where a fuelman moving a diesel somehow open the throttle wide and then panicked. The diesel was 8029 and it hit a Victorian G class with such force that it broke the G's motor from it's mounts shoving it into the electrical room. Then after that some bloke from Sydney had to train us all to drive locos but what he didn't know was that I already knew so I had to play the role of "I've never done this before" as Chubby teaching me to drive was against the rules. 8029 was bent in the middle like a banana for the rest of it's service days. What the fuelman should done was switch out the generator field switch on the 80's driver's control stand which even in 8th notch would return the engine speed to idle.

I remeber when just transfered to Delec in 1990 there was no 49 class et al just 48 and 73 class. Than for all sudden there were 49 class everywhere like frogs in rainy season. In this video I was expecting the sight of entering rozelle yard, but again, nothing. If any clip of the yard please share it. But this is still excellent upload, thanks for this.

The 49's were all based at Parkes and then some big wig decided to group all the GM's together in Sydney and that's how the 49's ended up at DELEC. They were there until the big sell off with some being scrapped and other's sold. Manildra Flour Mills bought some.
