    Great car when it works, but it's always a matter of when the next thing fails and where it'll leave you stranded, nothing like my 740 and 940 that just needed normal maintenance and soldiered on until I sold it (740, still regret selling that one) or cracked the head of the crappy VW diesel engine (940).

    The sound at first start could have been the dry powersteering pump if you didnt prime the pump and rotate it enough. Just a thought!

    UGH I HATE the power steering on the P2 Volvo's for multiple reasons. Many of them use the awful ZF variable assist system, which was used on many other luxury cars at the time. I've had a few and none of them worked because of the TINY valves on the rack that clog up, and they fail in the "low assist" mode. I fixed my S60's but it took me weeks to figure out. Then my pressure line blew and and it goes up and down around everything and is super hard to get out. And the pumps are expensive...and yada yada. I'm so glad you just needed a pump! Make sure your fluid is supppperrrr clean (and maybe even install a filter) because if the fluid is too dirty it will clog the variable assist system!

    I have a Volvo story to share. I picked up a 2015.5 XC70 T5, sadly the spark plugs exploded often and triggered four replacement engines--eventually Volvo re-purchased the car. I was so sad, that I went out and found a 2016 Volvo XC70 Premier--and that vehicle was involved in an accident. Chubb--our insurance carrier decided to deem the car as a total loss. Sad again. Then this past July, I happened upon a 2016 Volvo XC70 Platinum with 19,600 miles (I paid $30K). The car was not driven for a year (August 2021 through July 2022). I suspect the driver died and there was a delay in returning the car to market.
    I tell you this long story, because I believe that Volvo ownership is somewhat cultish. Volvos are heavy and don't have the best steering feel. They do however offer you a an opportunity to beat the odds of death by car. For me, that is worth all of the pain and misery we all suffer keeping these Swedish jalopies on the road,
    I salute your effort to return the 2005 V70R to service. Having a manual transmission is an amazing plus. Once you get all of the mechanicals sorted out, you can work on the paint and interior. The alternative is spending $60K plus on a brand new Volvo. Clearly a better path to restore the gem you found. Good luck!

    I swear the power steering pump has only one thing that matters and that is what type power steering fluid has been used in it if you ever are to replace a used one. Later models use environmental friendly fluid while the older model still use age old red ATF oil. That is the thing that could happened if you swap one of them out with a different, the pump could possibly seize or leak and power steering rack due to containments loosing up. Keep up the good work on keeping the car alive greetings from Sweden.

    I noticed the lower lip of the front bumper isn't installed properly causing it to sag.
    There are 3 'L' shaped plastic brackets molded into the lower radiator support, the rear lip of the bumper needs to be lifted up and into those 3 brackets, this stops it sagging.
    Most people don't seem to notice these brackets, I didn't at first...but they're there. 🙂🇦🇺

    I keep thinking about my Volvo 240s that I had, one Turbo, one NA. Both had 150,000 miles plus and were going strong when I sold them on. Basic Maintenance was all they needed. I wonder if most of these issues on your car are from complete lack of maintenance and being parked for a long time after it initially broke?

      @lbnewell23 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      100% my family have had many Volvos from this era and they had tons of miles and no issues ever because they had miles probably. Cars aren’t built to sit especially outside exposed to weather and being ruined by water like this one was which is sad

      @Dockhead ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lbnewell23 cars that constantly wear are cars not worth considering as a primary car or even something you ideally fantasised about.
      at a certain point cars just become a line of maintenance and once something explodes or breaks or wears then the next part around it will suffer and need maintenance next.
      see too many assholes buying rust bucket Miata's that never get running properly or stay running, but they pour a couple thousand into only to realise they cant call it quits because they'd look like assholes and be grands down.
      my point im tryna make really is the effort people want out of the car is sometimes out of sync with the practicality of the cars condition and function as a whole. nothing wrong with buying a clapped up car and fully restoring but you cant just expect somethings to be idealistic because you has a liking towards it. this is what i see a lot on youtube videos.

    Gotta love RockAuto. I'm in Canada and they are my go to for anything that isn't super heavy or if it's something I don't need right away. Can be their prices even with the recent rise in shipping costs.

    I got dumb lucky with this on my 2005 Viper. It was just the pressure hose fitting that leaked. The pumps are unobtanium...

    Well done Elliott... just a quick observation, is the accessory belt on backwards in regard to the V's which should be against the power steer pulley and not facing out... may pay to change it if it's had a lot of oil on it too. Man that power steer fluid was disgusting... may have to do my old BMW's after seeing yours... Stu from New Zealand

    My V70 xc has a similar issue. But as I've never seen it drip on the floor at all, I've determined it just uses some power steering fluid(ATF)

    You’re gonna have fun when that rack goes. Not easy to find a replacement, not easy to replace. Found out how expensive mine would be and drove it until it would not hold fluid long enough to get me to work

    On the flip side...soon you'll have a Brand New Spaceball One after replacing all the parts.
    I cringed when you touched that other computer....are you free of static? OUCH.

    Fun fact i think they dont like being taken care of 😂 call me crazy but my s60R the previous owner said it broke almost every week and he would baby it taking to the dealer every time and the giant book of recipets over 6 years i believe it lol he let it sit for a while and sold it to me as a parts car. I fixed the collar sleeve and the intercooler and its been fine! Granted its been slammed into a tree stump on the door because of a deer in the road. But i haven't fixed the door and haven't been fixing every tiny thing on it its basically been my beater R while i wait for v70R to get painted. Its been dead reliable to me and the previous owner on Facebook is completely shocked and mad every time i bring it up 😂

  • @AZACKAL
    @AZACKAL ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh and to the power steering pump? Ive changed them out all the time with one from junkyards they're the same as long as its in the correct year range. Newer models had a screw on line. The lines going to the rack are in fact different you don't need to change the lines to change a pump. Between my car and my friend's Rs ive changed 4 now lol all still going fine

    I thought I had killed my V70 R when the steering started making that noise too. Luckily it just turned out the clip on the hose to the fluid reservoir wasn't on tightly and it was just slowly leaking oil.

    Easiest way to remove the belt is to pop the plastic cap off the belt tensioner then use the bolt hidden behind the cap then use a wrench to release the tension.

  • @JWIVCCX

    I bought mine without power-steering. Replaced the pump (which was bad) and found it was leaking from the rack. After replacing the pump, reservoir, and hoses it seemed like it was caused in the first place by a leaking screw on the rack.
