Replacement of the oil plug washer each time is pretty standard. Also, over tightening will make the plug leak. Make sure you torque it to spec. Good call replacing the oil filter housing. When the get old, sometimes they just wont seal. Best wishes to you and thank you for continuing to make entertaining and informative content!

Yup, they are single use crush washers designed to form a seal once crushed. Sometimes you'll get away with re-using them a time or two, but it's bad practice. Personally I use copper washers which do the same thing (crush to form an oil-proof seal) - that's just because the parts store charge extra for a crush washer, and I have a huge pile of copper washers I bought decades ago for some job I was doing at the time - I expect I'll be dead long before I run out of them.

Couple things: 1. I’ve learned with any power steering stuff, if you replace one part due to age then you’re most likely gonna have to replace the entire system. I had an old BMW E38 that had one of the power steering hoses crack due to age so I replaced it. A few days later, the next weakest hose in line failed. And the process continued until I replaced all of the rubber components in the system. Basically once the weakest component is fixed, the next weakest component in line will end up breaking. 2. I work on BMWs and they may not be the same but I always replace the crush washer and oil filter gasket every time I do an oil change. If you don’t then they have a good chance of leaking, ask me how I know. With non American cars it’s always best to do things by the book. Cutting corners usually ends up with more issues than you started with. Those two things aside, this was a great video! Keep up the great work!

I bought an 04 V70R for $6K back in Sept. 21 with 225K miles on it. Mine is also a manual. I've spend just under $5K on it. That's including oil changes, new set of tires, a tune up (new spark plugs, fuel filter, air filters), engine mounts, new front wheel stoppers--I think that's what they're called--for when turning the wheels, right CV boot, both front sway bar links, and other things. I love it!!! It's fun to drive and pretty damn fast for what it is and how old it is.

As Elliot said, don't buy a car that has been sitting. The tell is the PCV and all the leaks. The car has never been maintained as it should have. Personally not surprised at any of this, it is not a Volvo thing, it is neglected thing. Bravo to Elliot and his uncle for their dedication.

I went through my own set of issues with my 2009 Volvo V50. Bought it with a lot of deferred maintenance courtesy of the previous owner, so I had a lot to fix when I got it. Slowly had a few more problems pop up as time went on, but I think it's mostly sorted. Only issue happening currently is a rattle coming from somewhere in the back at low speed bumps. Doesn't seem to be a functional issue so I haven't worried to much about it, but my time spent to track it down hasn't been fruitful yet. It's funny you said burning oil is Ford issue, because I own two Fords and one burns no oil and the other only burns a quart an oil change period and that one has over 200K miles. My Volvo burns nearly 3 quarts in 5k miles though. I still change it every 5k miles, but I've started using the cheapest synthetic oil on the shelf because I know it doesn't stay in the engine and just top it off every now and then. Blackstone oil said my engine was in good running order, so given the age and value of the car I'm not going to worry about fixing it. It's easier to add a quart every few thousand miles.

Elliot it would be a good idea to clean the engine thoroughly (and all surrounding areas that have been covered in oil from past misadventures) and then check for leaks again after another 140 miles to definitively determine where any remaining leaks are. There has been so much fluid sprayed around your engine and undercarriage that some of it may still be dripping down onto the floor. Once its all removed you'll be better able to identify any leaks.

    Hi,
A Volvo enthusiast from Scotland UK. Number one nice V70r. Please buy 20 cans of clutch and brake cleaner and use a couple of them to wash away all the oil from top to bottom then you might see what’s happening. Please use a proper socket for removing oil in plug, never over tighten them as you can strip all the threads causing a major issue. Check the cam shaft oil seals that sit at the top of the engine you’ll need to remove timing belt cover. You’ve just been unlucky to get a Volvo that’s not been cared for. But you still have what could be a diamond in the rough. Hope that helps Nick Scotland

@@ElliottAlvis your welcome, a little oil goes a long way… clean with spray cans then sit and idle 1500rpm and just sit and watch with very bright lights. You’ll find it. I’ve a 1997 AWD auto, 113,000 miles great car, 2006 V70 AWD D5 229,000 miles and a 2007 xc70 D5 with 115,000 miles. All great but always doing something with them. The "oilseparator" for the crankcasevent is mounted at the front of the block and it could wery well be the leak, it cind of sits just beside/behind the altetnator, its a pain to get to and the best way to work on it is to remove the intake witch isnt to big of a deal.
Try to look down there with a boroscope or something to see if it leaks.

I have a leaky old BMW but never have a drip on the garage floor. Crush washers for the drain plug and new rubber gasket for the oil filter housing with every oil change comes with the replacement filters anyway. Clean the housing and light lubrication of new housing O ring. Other thing is don’t over tighten your drain bolt like it’s a lug nut. It should be tightened down firm but not over torqued.

At 17:57 into the video you mentioned how the washer is “kind of collapsed” well with the washer you put on it’s going to give you more Volvo leaking video comment, because those OEM washers are called “crush” washers for a reason. The are one time use and intended to crush as tightened so that that make a proper seal with the pan. The solid washer you used will deform the pan and cause leakage. Don’t over tighten with that solid washer, or the proper crush washers can’t do their job. Regardless, glad to see the Volvo getting some more love.

I had a similar leak on my 2004 V70R that took a while to find, but it was a high pressure power steering line that came out of the pump, and went to the rack. It had a pinhole that would lightly leak in a rubber part of the line, then the oil would follow along the line and drip near the middle of the car near the crank pulley. I also had oil near the front, because that line runs up behind the bumper. If you thought getting to the bolts on the bottom of the turbo was hard, just wait till you stuff a stubby wrench in to get to that line on the rack. 😂

The oring on that filter housing may have been the original factory one or at least quite old. They get flat and hard and then leak even though they are not broken.
The threads being dirty is irrelevant. Only the oring seals the housing. Overtightening it will ruin the oring and cause it to leak.
It looked like you were going the wrong way when trying to remove the pan plug with the wrench and socket.

That is what goes bad on a car that has not been driven, is all the hoses and seals and such. They never start leaking until you start driving.

I feel your pain, I drove an S60T to 225,000 miles and had nothing but problems with it. Seemed like I was under the thing every other weekend. LOVED driving it. HATED working on it.

I suggest adding some oil dye to the engine oil, run it and use a uv black light to try to see where it’s leaking. If you don’t see any dye then it’s another fluid. Add dye to that fluid and repeat

if the oil changes on the Volvo engine are not done, the PCV valve can block, this then causes pressure and blows oil gaskets all over the engine. there is a simple test with the engine idling to check the operation of the PCV valve.

Happy holidays, Elliott! I absolutely expected the Volvo to be a drama queen at least once more this year! Gah, what a frustrating time! I really hope the new year treats you much better than 2022 did. Meowy Christmas to you, your Uncle, coworkers, and of course the rest of your friends and family!

    A well-oiled alternator equals greased 🌩 lightning.
How about using leak detection dye to help trace remaining leaks?
    Congratulations on 50,000 subscribers.

I loved but absolutely hated my 07 XC70. Always broken, always expensive, but very comfortable and great for road trips… other than being extremely unreliable.

SMH... New oil filter gasket (in the box, small coat of new oil) and new crush washer on the drain plug for every change. Hope all the troubles haven't soured you on the car. Just be happy you don't have to deal with the AW55-50SN! lol A VCT2000, a old copy of VADIS, and swapping everything short of engine internals/Brembo calipers for performance parts taught me more than I care to know about the P2 platform (04 and 06 S60R owner).

Every car needs a good fitting name, and your Volvo let it shine through, you should call it Puddles. 😆 (And congrats to 50k! 🥳)

Seems to be a less then stellar example of a V70r you got hold of... had a 2004 13 -14 years ago with 111k miles and I was lucky under my ownership, only services and tires... 😊

I had same issues and I sprayed and cleaned everything then seen it was leaking from top of oil filter. Grave it some gas and yep oil filter wasn't tight enough. As I'm writing this looks like your onto it now 🤪

I think I've found the root problem causing all the problems you've had with this Volvo: The one common denominator is that they start when you drive it. Have you considered just not driving it? I'm sure if you take that approach, you'll have no more issues with it.

Get that volvo wrapped and you'll think it's more attractive than the maserati. Mine is wrapped in Hidden Forest color change.... I also super appreciate that this was a Volvo R slash Prius ep, I'm a big fan of the Prius.... just my prius is broken (and a gen 1!) and my R is the reliable daily lol. I've been wanting a prius back though... and a beat up 2nd gen is my go to answer for a reliable car, the motor generator thing never really seems to fail on the old ones and battery replacement is so cheap.

I mean, the modern crescent wrench was invented and patented in Sweden, so if you want to use it on a Volvo, at least you can say it's in keeping with its origins!
