Africa in focus: Self-governing, autonomous Somaliland | DW News

  • Africa's Somaliland is a self-governing autonomous region with its own currency, military and passport. But it is not recognized as a sovereign state. Somaliland broke away and declared independence from Somalia 30 years ago. It's seen as a stable region, especially when compared to the rest of Somalia, where there is a big terrorism threat. But most of Somaliland's 4.5 million people live in poverty. DW takes a closer look at Somaliland and its society.

The same that Somali people wish for us, if suddenly more and more Germans would come the country because they dont want to live in Germany anymore. In any case Germany is not just East and West. It comprises of several former kingdoms like Bavaria and Saxony and surely the world has learned that it was not a good idea for German tribes to unify. Maybe they are afraid of Somali tribes to unify too. And anyways German speaking countries are not unified yet either. Actually we are in the same situation. See Germany and Austria. 70% of Somali women are the breadwinners in their households. DW missed the mark. Women in Somaliland have definitely a voice and they use it whenever needed. They are clan based which means women in Somaliland are able to use their voices because they have the backing of their clans and subclans. There is much less violence against women in Somaliland than in Germany because Somaliland's women like I said have the backing of their clans and subclans which makes them more safe than many women around the world.

      Because this Somali identity is bigger and older than any other names appeared last 100 years such as Somaliland , Ogaden or Puntland these are just a subcategory irrelevant names.
      I used know many people from hargeysa early or mid 90s they used hang Somali republic flag in their house and cars but the idea of seperate nation of Somaliland surfaced early 2000 and unward they start to taking the republic flag down and replaced with the Somaliland flag. See politicians guide their people in any direction they want and remember when they're gone they don't give a damn what is left behind and this is only true for Somali politicians they leave broken nation and people behind watch Siyad Barre left Somalia burning and Musa Bixi will leave Somaliland unrecognised and marginalised people.

    DW NEWS reporters seem to defame the culture and traditions of the Somaliland population! Because our community does not oppress or deprive women of their freedom as you put it in your news… Our mothers and daughters are the most honored in among our society, for example, a Somalilander mother is safe and being cared for at her home, and protected from being sent to do difficult tasks. Instead, the Father has a responsibility to protect and care for the Family. As understood from your report; There is no place for girls in Somaliland to be deprived of wealth or are encouraged to not make money.
    Our Mothers are happy and content with their lives, honored and respected in their society.
    If you are concerned in expressing about women's rights! Your daughters desperately demand someone to speak for their rights more than ours, and report about the violence and negligence against women that is going on every day in Western societies such as rape, murder, and humiliation, etc.

    • @JokoCi
      @JokoCi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You seem to have a very skewed understanding of the word 'freedom'.
      Freedom does not mean that you only have the choices that others decide for you. It means that you are free to do what everyone else is allowed to do aswell.
      I wonder if you see how you are denegrating women, is it inherrent in your upbringing? Do you recognise that you have described "women's tasks" as the easy ones. That as you say, they are not being sent to do 'difficult tasks'? As if they would not be capable of them?
      The fact that western societies do not hide the crimes against women, does not mean that countries that do hide them, do not have them. Rape and murder, violence against women are far more prevalent in societies that do not afford equal rights to them. They do simply not care to look.
      Humiliation is a word that literally describes the state of lowering someone else below one self, literally the way you did describe women.
      I think you have a severe lack of introsepection.

      Cultures can be brutal, injust, inhuman, just plain bad for everyone in them.
      Believes can be incorrect.
      Voicing your ideas is worth nothing if they are not allowed to affront other peoples ideas.
      Whenever you say 'you cannot criticise something' , what you are realy saying is, that you do not want to have to defend it. Most likely because you do not feel equipped to actualy do so, because they are wrong, or because you are simply not used to the idea that people who think, do.
