With 70 million cattle, 42 million sheep, 52 million goats, 8 million camels, and 56 million chickens, Ethiopia has the largest livestock population across the African continent. However, the problem in African cattle is the absence of productivity and value add industry including meat, milk and skin proceiving companies.

There's a habitable zone for significant animal domestication and ranching that is parallel to the civilization of mankind and empires, the Rift Valley Plains of East Africa are the beginnings of mankind and human civilizations, and the Sahel of Africa is where humanity first thrived free off tropical pests and diseases....
The Sahel and the African Rift Valley intersect precisely in South Sudan , at the point of the most fertile and contested land on earth the flood marshes of Kerma, that are the "lower Egypt" and founding of an empire romanticized by European (Greek and later Roman) conquest and cultural appropriation....
But, there many other stories of humanity, in the glory of Africa that preceded the founding of Egypt----

In the rest of the world, cattle are raised and milked on the farmers own land, as a business. Without land, there is no point in owning cattle, no milk, no butter, no cheese, no dairy industry. Land ownership has to come first.

Then if this were a natural market driven reality, then local beef farmers would make a killing, but because the beef industry has been abrogated by the state to foreign exchange, then the beef imports will forever keep increasing to meet the needs, for foreign exchange dollars...
The Nigerian INTERNAL beef MARKET is the target--- countries like Kenya, have nationalized (parastatal) the nomadic agriculture/husbandry sector. Kenyans also have new emergent problems to, in the creation of land consuming "ranches" aka "conservancies", but atleast, in the short-term those reduce conflicts between animal and crop farmers....
There is clearly no need for Nigeria to reinvent the wheel, they can learn from either Kenya or Botswana granted the Fulani-Sahel nomadic cattle ranch circuit that is as old as civilised Africa itself, is an EXTREMELY difficult proposition, that will require multinational and indigenous DEMOCRATIC solutions..
There already exists a western solution with African (social) characteristics....

A Sri Lankan/Tamil and my parents lived in Nigeria for a long time in Ibadan city and we have travelled as far as kano. It is better to stick to the traditional ways of doing dairy farming that Nigeria has been doing since time immemorial. Nigeria could provide various forms of assistance to the small diary farmers to make things better and increase the production. . Small-scale diary farms also provide jobs to thousands of herders and others. Another interesting fact is, cows in Nigeria, are mostly free range and the milk produced is way better. Above all, political stability would provide boost to everything.

Most of these experts that come on air to analyse issues are experts in criticism than proferring solutions. While the challenges will always be there, the new initiative should be embraced and supported by majority of the stakeholders.
At the height of the Nigerian herders-farmers crisis couple of years ago, Tinubu released a press statement where this idea now being implemented were highlighted. There's the need for action and having a dedicated livestock ministry will surely boost efforts geared towards addressing the challenges in the sector.
Going commercial does not necessarily imply an end to subsistence livestock farming. I am from Southwest Nigeria, I won't take unprocessed cow milk. Even if I can buy from my local livestock herder, I can't drink it. Synergy is required to maximized the potentials of the sector.
Do African countries still adopt developmental strategies that the advanced countries have now jettisoned? Yes because it's a necessary process. I don't think we can jump the process particularly in respect of industrialization.
What is most required is character and leadership from those saddled with the responsibility of implementing this new approach and support of the major stakeholders. Security should also be boosted and national interest placed above personal entrepreneurial benefits.

Small scale farming is not a sustainable model. There is no economies of scale. Nigeria seriously needs to scale its agriculture to feeds itself and then share with the rest of the world. We have had subsistent farming for decades, where is the impact? Infact, it is highly susceptible to failing under adversity, but commercial agriculture could be highly resilient - if the incentives are right by the government. Part of this incentive is the Nigerian government getting out of the way of progress.

She is talking nonsense. Just keep the cows in ranch whether as a commercial or small scale farmer). This stops the blood- bathing encounters when the Fulani pastoralists and the host communities and farmers.

    FOREIGN EXCHANGE----dollars!
There already exists the possibility in the Sahel for a western solution to beef farming, albeit with African (social) characteristics....

    • @pk3778
      @pk3778 25 วันที่ผ่านมา
