Man, hearing these old stories just really shows how HORRIBLY managed WCW was. Can you imagine? With that roster? If they had a meeting, and ONE booker was in charge and everyone from vets to rookies understood how the business worked? They’d still be around today and maybe bigger than WWE
Agreed - terribly managed environment (wrestlers forming groups backstage), terribly managed booking and a general lack of understanding the business. Also it's pretty obvious that Sting should have been the one to finally defeat Goldberg.
sadly when WCW rose to fame and attracted the big dawgs egos and money went straight to their heads... clear cut classic of cut your nose to spite your face.
I've been watching WCW episodes through 94 to 97 now and time to time it shows through how much it lacked managing. The Sting shenanigans are just sad and why did they let Macho Man go so long without a contract? Yeah, it gave more space to Nwo, but there was only ever 1-2 storylines going on. Benoit ja Eddie Guerrero get so much less interesting stuff going on than in WWE.
26:40 Jericho calls him a goof. In Canada at the time, calling someone a goof was fighting words. It was jail slang for pedophile, but was also the word you called someone when you wanted to kick off a fight.
Goof is such a gentle insult that it carries no malice in the USA. It's like saying buddy. It's wild that it apparently is or was such a strong insult in Canada.
This video was put together extremely well, even compared to this channel's usual high quality. Ending with the backstage 1-0 record was a superb touch to give the whole thing a through-line.
@@dmurphy1578 I think it was more a status issue. While Jericho had more in-ring talent and better mic skills than just about everyone, he was one of the many kept down by the older generation at that time. Status wise Jericho, as great as he was, was a tv champion aka 3rd tier, he was at the time in the same status as guys like Dean Malenko, Chavo, La Parka, Regal but was a fan favorite due to in-ring work and promo ability. Goldberg was up there status wise with the main eventers, the world champions, the 1st tier guys like Hogan, Flair, Nash, Sting, DDP. His rise was too fast for him to look at himself like the guy who should be doing favors to guys like Jericho then. He didn't want to work with him at the time when he could be headlining PPV's with Sting, DDP, Steiner, Hogan, Savage, Nash, The Giant, Hall, taking out entire factions in handicap matches etc. Was he wrong for it? Hell yes! But like it was mentioned in the video, there were lots of people in Goldbergs ear at the time saying he shouldn't be working with Jericho, which was most likely the same guys keeping guys like Jericho down. They not only wanted to be the guys working with Goldberg, but also the longer Jericho got the rub working angles with Goldberg, the more likely guys like Hogan and Nash would have to be working with him and sharing their spot with him as well. That would have actually been great for WCW, but those guys wanted to keep their own circle to draw money for themselves and keep main eventing.
5:33 is just one example of Chris not afraid to laugh at himself and do whatever it takes to push a story even at his expense because it’s good storytelling

Yeeeah... Goldberg was green at that point, while Jericho had been around the world and had been in business for several years. Did Goldberg seriously think that wrestling was about actually beating somebody in a fight?
It’s around this time I was starting to get sick of Goldberg. Squashing jobbers is one thing but three minute matches against established stars was too much.
Imagine how much better so many things would have been if people just listened to CJ’s ideas. He’s not selfish or egotistical; he’s smart and hardworking
Yeah maybe young Jericho. AEW Jericho buries all the young talent that he works with and has been responsible for some of the worst wrestling television in history
Used to watch WCW just for Jericho. Heel Jericho was absolutely hysterical, and when he brought the whole show over to WWF/E, it was awesome, and the Rock did him a real solid with that debut.
I have watched wrestling scenes the late 70's . I never cared for Goldberg , but Jericho is a underrated wrestler. He should have been a lot bigger than some of those wrestlers . Some of big men was not wrestlers. Just washed up football players that didn't save there money. They were stiff in the ring and not very agile , but still entertainment for people.
@@pleaseshutup7053 that was WCW. They disrespected everyone. That is why they were great for a period of time. An organized shat show was more entertaining than what Vince was putting on TV.
As a kid watching this feud live on WcW was special like Chris says. It was a legendary feud similar to Vince and Stone Cold. You have a goofy character and a serious character and it worked very well. You wanted Goldberg to get his hands on him and when he did it was golden. Then when WWF had the clock counting down, that 3, 2, 1 BOOM! Break the wall down! Welcome to RAW IS JERICHO. Dude I never seen someone transition from wcw to wwf like that and do it this well and hype it the way he did.
I remember someone making a video on it. Apparently in the US (At least at the time) the courts would only look at the sheet for the music, they wouldn’t actually listen to the song. That meant that when Nirvana or Pearl Jam got pissy with WCW they had no chance in court
This was so well done and not in small part due to Jericho's accounts. I think I will pick up his books. It can't be overstated how Chris Jericho is likely THE greatest wrestler of all time IMO. He has been able to reinvent himself over and over, maintain being interesting, integrate his various talents into wrestling for a better experience (ie: his music), and perform at a high level. I will argue that some of his best OVERALL work is in AEW and he brought me back to wrestling after bailing at around 2008. I remember the antics of Jericho and he was a troll before troll culture became an artform and not something necessarily reviled. Not to mention, he didn't get buried by the WWF. And if anyone wants to see what Jericho was just a couple years into his career, watch the pop for Jericho's debut in WWF. We all knew he was possibly going over, but we didn't know when. Then there he was. The only other pop so big was DDP unmasking.
I cant stop thinking about Goldberg screaming with tears in his eyes to Jericho, who just punched him after getting pulled by the hair by him, "your mother is a goof!" its hilarious.

The best thing Jericho did was leave that company in WCW. His matches along with his heel character were underrated but never really noticed by higher ups. Pretty sure Goldberg has had issues with other people other than Jericho.
I remember when Jericho went to WWE, I was confuse why it was such a big deal because he was always a Mid card in WCW. Twenty plus years later and I'm glad Vince gave him a chance to do his thing. He literally became one of the greatest wrestlers in the history of wrestling.
He made the right choice but it would have been interesting if he'd stayed during the Russo era. He'd probably have gotten Jarret's spot and might've even become champion, although it was a sinking ship by that point so he'd have still ended up in WWE with the invasion most likely.

That was when he just became mid 40. Dude still bumps in AEW in his late 40s and now early 50s.
Sounded like Bill Goldberg had a ton of personal insecurities during his initial runs in the WCW and WWF. Definitely didn't help he was fast-tracked past training and mat fundamentals. Jericho knocking him down a few pegs was probably the best thing to check Goldberg's fragile ego.

Wait, wait, wait... at 24:40 Jericho held onto his patented front facelock??!!?? I for sure thought once he got him on the ground, he would've locked in THE AAARRRMMM BAAARRR!!!!!
What I'm probably left wondering the most about is this: Jericho went into detail about this incident, and while you pointed out his chronology is a bit "loose", it's also not entirely unbelievable. Goldberg doesn't talk much about it, because he doesn't want to talk "comedy" wrestling. (Nowadays it's more tragi-comedy, but that's another topic...) But with Nash being around for BOTH scenarios... has he gone into depth about it on any of his shoots? Kevin LOVES to talk like he's the coolest cat in the room, so him adding his two cents about this heated situation is not far from the Nash bag-o-tricks!
He'd take a chance to bury Jericho... Every one of them still acts like it was not a big deal him jumping to WWE, which shows how far from the pulse they were
@@rileyk5228 See just don't think he can do that here. Listen to him talk about the Fingerpoke of Doom, lying b****rd knows that he had a hand in it and REFUSES to take responsibility for it. He won't talk unless he twist it, and he is smart enough to know that he can't do that here.

Man, hearing these old stories just really shows how HORRIBLY managed WCW was. Can you imagine? With that roster? If they had a meeting, and ONE booker was in charge and everyone from vets to rookies understood how the business worked? They’d still be around today and maybe bigger than WWE
WCW with sting was absolute gold back in the day... WCW knocked WWE outta the park back than...
@Renatogabriel1221 no it never.
Wow learned some thing new
I've seen more fights pop off over the word goof than anything else in Canada Lol
USA's hat has some crazy culture to be sure.
Goof is such a gentle insult that it carries no malice in the USA. It's like saying buddy. It's wild that it apparently is or was such a strong insult in Canada.
Down here in the states, it’s “chomo”, fyi
This video was put together extremely well, even compared to this channel's usual high quality. Ending with the backstage 1-0 record was a superb touch to give the whole thing a through-line.
Gotta love that Jericho gave Kenny Powers his WCW debut as the Jericho Ninja.

Goldberg is taking himself too seriously during this saga w Jericho.

Wrestling backstage drama is such a gold mine for a youtube channel like this. There's TONS of stories out there like this one and I'm looking forward to more videos along the same lines :D Good job.
"You could never last with me in the ring"
I'm sorry, but I had to pause the video for a moment because I was laughing so hard. The ego Goldberg has to have the audacity to say that Jericho couldn't last with him, even in 1998? Come down from the clouds sometime, Bill.
Yeeeah... Goldberg was green at that point, while Jericho had been around the world and had been in business for several years. Did Goldberg seriously think that wrestling was about actually beating somebody in a fight?
Yeah Goldberg was a super mark for himself and it had to be pretty embarrassing for veterans of the locker room back then
The fact that his evidence of greatness was that he beat a "wrestler" (Hogan) in the ring, so he would beat Jericho IRL? Jesus Christ this guy.

Booker is a funny guy. He could cut a hell of a promo.

Utterly LOVED Eddie Vedder's vocals for Even Flow hovering over Jericho's WCW theme which of course was "influenced" by the Pearl Jam classic. 👍👏👏
Yeah, maybe he should get Cobain’s vocals over DDP’s theme for a DDP bio.
Exxxceeeeeeeept they were in two different keys…. Painful 😫😫😫
I remember someone making a video on it. Apparently in the US (At least at the time) the courts would only look at the sheet for the music, they wouldn’t actually listen to the song. That meant that when Nirvana or Pearl Jam got pissy with WCW they had no chance in court
@@RevTekMedia Yep. Jarring!
And Booker T's reaction too.
Late 90’s petulant and egotistical heel Jericho is one of my favourite wrestlers ever. I still chuckle to myself When I think about him feuding with Dean Malenko and he would come out and read from his list of moves.

I remember falling out of my chair laughing when he first said Greenberg! WCW didn't know what they had with Jericho. However, it did lead to the greatest WWE intro of all time.
Brilliant! Yet another situation that contributes to the demise of WCW. I mean just imagine if Bischoff took a gamble on Jericho. I’m not saying it would’ve ultimately saved WCW but it certainly could’ve done the company some good.

Jericho loves bumping. He's as good a bumper as a promo cutter. Remember his falls from the tall ladder in the 2016 RAW where the lunatic fringe climbed up Jericho's ladder while everyone else was getting off theirs, and gave Jericho a big punch to make him fall to the mat?
Nash won't tell a story without some lie that makes him look good. He can't do that here
He'd take a chance to bury Jericho... Every one of them still acts like it was not a big deal him jumping to WWE, which shows how far from the pulse they were
