When Shawn Michaels met Hulk Hogan at the 2005 SummerSlam PPV, fans witnessed something quite unusual inside in the ring. A battle of the egos took place as HBK and Hulk's backstage issues transferred into the ring, and Shawn Michaels decided to oversell everything the Hulkster did in the ring. It's been widely reported that Shawn Michaels vs Hulk Hogan was supposed to be a match series where the 2 legends would share victories over a few pay per views, but when Hogan decided it was a "one and done" deal and when it was decided that Hogan would win the match, Shawn Michaels decided to make a joke of the match by selling all of Hulk Hogan's offense with high amounts of gusto.
Hulk Hogan made his WWE return in 2005 after receiving a Hall of Fame induction. Initially, Hogan and Shawn Michaels joined forces, but it didn't take long for Michaels to turn his back on The Hulkster. A storyline developed where Shawn Michaels would say he never bought into the myth of Hulkamania, and Shawn turned heel in order to work this one single match at Summerslam. Many will remember Shawn Michaels dressing up in Hogan gear and making an appearance on a Larry King live ripoff, and many will remember Shawn completely ripping into Hogan at every oppurtunity.
This video looks at the entire buildup of the Summerslam 2005 "Legend vs Icon" match. Topics covered include:
00:00 - Hulk Hogan's 2005 WWE return
05:32 - Shawn Michaels turns heel
11:16 - Shawn Michaels dresses up as Hulk Hogan on Larry King Live
15:05 - Shawn Michaels heel promo in Montreal
17:55 - Hulk Hogan vs Shawn Michaels at SummerSlam 2005
23:14 - HBK's final jabs at Hogan

I'll never forget the greatest comment I ever read about this match, "Hogan thought he undersold."
I don’t get it…
Not sure if I’m stupid, or if I’m missing some inside knowledge that fans who watched every episode in the lead up and laugh because it’s funny based on something hulk has said leading up to it….
I just don’t get it, either way.
Can you lay it out for me, please?

@@kyleerrington8004 no
@@kyleerrington8004 no no it aint that deep, Hogan likes to play bacstage games so Hogan likes it when other wrestlers make him look ultra strong. The joke is even in hbks crazy ass over seellin its not good enough.
@@kyleerrington8004 to “sell” is to make the other wrestler’s move look ultra effective. A good example is when the Rock took a Stone Cold Stunner. He flopped and flipped all over the ring to make the Stunner look super effective and powerful. Hogan is regarded as being a wrestler that you either sucked up to and do what he wanted or you’d be raked through the coals and end up doing it anyway. He had a lot of creative control and ended up with a lot of “political” control in the organizations he was in.
Lol Hogan actually said that though...he didn't notice anything
That last oversell with HBK getting knocked down with the big boot, getting up, flopping around, and falling down again gets me every time
I always thought Shawn did this for one of two reasons: he oversold so much that Hogan would hate the match and agree for a second then third match, or he oversold so nobody would remember Hogan won, they would remember Shawn.
I thought he did it 2 show how crazy it is 4 those powerful simple moves from a senior citizen is supposed 2 conquer everything
You're absolutely right about the second reason. Everytime I think about this match and rivalry the first thing that comes to mind is the fake Larry King interview and Shawn's antics and overselling. Hogan winning the match is a distant afterthought for me.

Hogan made a career of no selling and his 7 moves of doom. I loved watching HBK shred him in promos. It was a crazy match, but Shawn over selling seemed fitting.
No, Hogan made a career out of amazing selling of his opponents, then he would "Hulk Up" and send the huge crowds that he drew home happy.
@@handsolo1209 I must have been watching the wrong Hogan matches then. Because I can recall watching him no sell everything in WCW, before he even "Hulked Up". But to be honest, I always hated Hogan. Back in those days I was more of a Piper fan.
@@boatshoes4life You must have done because literally EVERY pro wrestler that he ever worked with said that he sold their offense brilliantly and only no sold when he was Hulking Up,. His act would grate on a person if they were not a fan of his, and I get that totally, but to be honest 99% of the people who watched WWF from 1984-1992 and a massive percentage WCW from 1994 until 2000 were only there because of Hogan, so you can see why every promoter tailored the product to suit him.
@@handsolo1209 Ohhhhhh I get the draw. In that time you couldn't get a bigger name. You wanted to put butts in the seats, you had Hogan, still works a little to this day. If you were alive in the late 1980’s or the 1990’s. Then you got plenty of heel Shawn. By the 2000’s rolled around, Shawn was coming to the end of his career

This felt like a microcosm of what would have happened if 90's Shawn had left to join Nash and Hall in WCW when he hit the roadblock that was Hulk Hogan.
He would have been relegated to the US Title like Bret was till Hogan buggered off.
When Hogan left in 98 that should have been it for his career.
That's my biggest 'what it's of the attitude era. An hbk led nwo would have been amazing

The montreal thing where Shawn Michaels trolled the audience into thinking Hart would appear is one of wrestlings finest moments. Every time i rewatch it i get pumped up for Bret to appear and everytime i get dissappointed by it. Regardless of my knowledge and after seing it 50 times it always gets me and that is thanks to Michaels selling and absolute savagery. I love it.
Nice job on the entrance music splice, I never would’ve thought it would’ve worked so well lol
I gotta say this was one of my favourite summerslam matches just for Shawn's selling for me somehow made up for Hogan's limitations in the ring
That’s something that I always assumed was part of the match and not politics. Shawn always sold like a champ for everybody, and I figured his cartoonish selling was part of selling for the absolute cartoon that was Hulkamania
That Intro music was done so well tho
Wrestling Bios keep a dope ass intro
@@MrMDMPOfficial dem a do
Honestly don't know how he has time to keep popping them out!
As a kid I couldn't get enough of the build-up, some of my favorite memories as a kid I looked forward to those summer nights so much.
Hbk with the imaginary shovel is one of my favorite wrestling images ever hahaha
