Quest for a New Species: Midas Cichlid & Red Devil Cichlid

  • I decided to drive down to the Cutler Bay and Homestead area of Miami to try my luck at getting some new species. This small canal was very clear, very deep, and filled with many different fish. Unfortunately, it was hard to get them to bite the live redworm. They were all interested in it, but didn't want to commit to biting it. Eventually, I was able to hook into two cichlids and after trying to identify them I decided to list them as hybrids and thus didn't include them as a new species for my lifelist. The day wasn't a lost cause though since I did also hook up with my first ever mullet. I ended up identifying this one as a striped mullet, but would love it if someone could confirm this. All things considered, it was a decent Sunday morning.

    I catch mullet all the time on worms here in Louisiana, and yes they fight hard.

    Fish #2 is a Red Devil. Black blotches, big lips, and body a bit more elongated.
    Fish#1 might be a hybrid. Midas usually has a fat forehead or even a hump, and the color is usually not quite as intense. ( Also too red instead of orange ) Your fish is too awesome; a female wouldn't have a hump, but wouldn't have that much color, while a male with that much color ( breeding color ) should have a hump. As such, I think you have a hybrid.

      Thanks for the detailed explanation. These two are tough to tell apart and the hybrids just make it impossible for me lol

    I know a bunch of places to catch them...i caught some on shiners one time. Bread most of the time though.

      Thanks. I figured bread would be a good bait too. I know they're all over Homestead and southern South Miami, but I just don't get down there very often any more.

    Have you ever checked out the dania pier? Amazing fishig with tons of species

      I have not. I've actually been thinking about going to either dania pier or anglins pier this weekend. Have you been to both and do you have a preference?

      @@TheFishingNomad I’ve only been to dania so can’t tell u much about anglins but definitely check it out! Bring a sabiki rig to catch bait, and you can cut it up or throw it out live. Shrimp works too, of course. Can catch anything from jack, snook, snapper, pompano, mackerel...

      @TheFishingNomad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think most canals in the southern part of Miami should hold these.

      @@TheFishingNomad awesome! Did you catch any buttikoferi cichlids aka zebra tilapia?

    • @TheFishingNomad
      @TheFishingNomad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tysonl9782 Not in this spot, but I have caught them. They're more likely to be found in the actual Miami area. If you venture too far out of the city, it's harder to find them. Check out this video.
