In this video we talk about how to care for Midas Cichlids (Amphilophus citrinellus) and Red Devil Cichlids (Amphilophus labiatus). We will also discuss how to breed Midas Cichlids and Red Devils. We have some great footage that has taken over two years to accumulate and you will also see the HUGE spawns produced by this awesome fish!

I enjoyed my tank busters years ago too. Now I’m into smaller cichlids and dwarfs. My experience is all the cichlids have personality which is enjoyable and easy to attach too. Jason love the topics, keep them coming. Again love Joanna’s decorating skills.
I agree with you. They always look like they are thinking about something (usually food and attacking someone else), but at least they are thinking. Haha

Midas Cichlids tend to have a larger nuchal hump than the Red Devil and comes in a more variety of colors

Awesome documentary! Usually if cichlids grow up together they tolerate each other especially when they pair up, you can expect excellent parenting.

I just picked up a small group of 7 from Fish Farm in Georgia. They are in a 75 gallon. Probably about 1.5"-2". Central American Cichlids are my favorite. My goal is to sometimes keep several in an indoor pond.
It’s so cool how they go through their color morphs as they grow up.
I find that interesting too!
I want one so bad, but it's that jump from finding a spot for a 4ft tank to finding a spot for a 6ft that is so prohibitive. The nuchal hump is pretty epic. But honestly, pretty much all my cichlids behave similarly to Roger. When I walk in the room the subdominant fish all emerge from their caves, and this might sound insane to people who don't keep cichlids, but it's like a truce is called and all the fish lose interest in chasing each other and all come to the front of the tank. All but the tank boss (a largish Cobalt Zebra Mbuna I inherited with the tank) will take food from my hand, and depending on the day most are comfortable enough to let me pet them. They certainly like to peck at my arms during water changes.
I guess that's just a long winded way of saying that all cichlids seem to have abundant personality, I think it's just a matter of how much time you have to interact with the fish, and given that's my only tank that has cichlids in it, I do tend to spend a lot of time interacting with those fish. Another great vid that is tempting me to play more fish tank tetris in an attempt to find room for a 6x2x2 :)
My red devils just bred today and they are only like a good 6 to 8 inches. They will continue breeding every like year or half a year for like the rest of their lives so consider that when keeping big central american cichlids.
If you were in the UK I would give you one if you could tank it. I have 25 amd im in the UK and I was told them were convicts but 2 years later they defo aint. L

My brother was telling me 7 of his fish were dead so I went over to investigate. Sure enough spotted the culprit Red Devil I said you got a straight killer in your tank. I had to take him and put him in one of my empty tanks. Thanks for the video Jason!!!!!

Got 2 of these about 9 or 10 inch live with my other cichlids, Oscars, severums, green terors etc no issues the ale occasionally chases if he is being grumpy but never seen him bite any of the others.
i use the fry as feeders for other bigger frys. and give them to who ever wants them and or trade with lfs for fish food. i have pair that breeds every three months.
Hey Jason, here's a question for you:
-What weight of stones would you say is optimum for a 50gal corner tank with about 3 inches of sand?
I know it's nothing to do with this video but it just came to mind as I was watching your tank set up here.
That is a good question. I'm not exactly sure because I haven't had that tank configuration. I would go on the lighter side because corner tanks and bow fronts seem to have a lot more stress on the seals.

Very informative video. Thanks for sharing. Maybe you could help give me advice. I want to get a Midas or red devil for my 6 ft 135 gallon tank with about 40-45 African cichlids (mostly juveniles with 3 full size adults). Do you think it’s a bad idea with this size tank, or is it worth a try?
Usually it doesn't work out. That being said I have the female in this video in a peacock tank and it has worked out for quite some time. I had a male from this group in a 125 with peacocks and he had to be removed - he was brutal!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks for your response. Do female Red Devils/Midas tend to be less aggressive than males? I’ve found a ~8inch red devil female that I’m told is peaceful with her tank mates, but my tank has sizes ranging from 2-6inches. Do you think this would put the smaller ones in danger of being eaten?

Does sponge filter (less surface agitation) trigger spawning? Will they spawn with high filtration and high surface agitation?

The Red Devils dominate the lakes of Puerto Rico. The local biologist wants to stock the lake with the large species of Amazonian bass to thin them out. We have the smaller Peacock bass. The bigger Peacocks are between 4 and 6 pounds. What amazed me was how good the Red Devils are to eat, one of the best tasting freshwater fish I have ever ate.
Never actually thought about eating them. : -)

How long would you say a 40 breeder would be sufficient for a grow out tank? Planning projects in the fishroom and will have a 40 breeder available with a 75 gallon free in several months.

They will guard them until a new batch is coming. I would remove them at about .5”.
What you feed this great Cichlids... I had also One pair
I feed them Hikari food sticks, blood worms, brine shrimp and flake food as well.

Unfortunately, we lost him after they had fry. The fry were eating off his mucus coat and he wouldn't eat. Tried to separate him in a different tank, but he wouldn't go back on food. Very sad.

A 125 would probably work out better long term, but a 75 gallon is usually ok for a while.

Hi, what nice looking cichlids could I keep with my blue scars in a 55 gallon
My guess is they would kill just about everything else in a 55 gallon. A lot of people just keep one in a 75 gallon or get a really large tank and overstock it so the fish don't kill each other. : -)

@@willpanes7692 angelfish, keyhole cichlids, apistos or Bolivian rams could work, acaras can get bullied by more aggressive cichlids especially in smaller setups
i also find red devils attain their adult colours far quicker than midas and are also not as round and tall bodied right from a young age

My Midas might be the biggest gluttons I've ever kept in my 15 years of fish keeping lol
Couldnt be more timely , picked up a 3 inch midas yesterday , got plenty of big tanks with other big cichlids to experiment who is happy living with who but also plan B of it living on its own , at what sort of size did they show signs to sex them ( the males hump etc etc )
And yea super clutches of aggressive cichlids can be a right hassle to deal with , just had a pair of juvenile Jags drop hundreds of fry

I had a large male Midas who was unbelievably aggressive. He would slam into the tank if you even walked in the room. He was in a 90 gallon and systematically killed all of my bristlenose plecos.

I've heard that most Red Devils in the hobby are actually hybrids with some Midas Cichlid DNA. I'm not sure if the same is true for Midas Cichlids.
Ya, I think it is becoming increasingly difficult to determine if what one is getting is a purebred.

I think it's nice to add that these fish are so aggressive when breeding that they can keep their fry untouched even from fully-grown peacock bass, as I have seen in São Paulo's public aquarium.

definitely not Red Devils because true amphilophus labiatus have huge lips from about 2 inches and up most Midas or red devil cichlids you see are a cross between the two. Those are still really beautiful fish. Thanks for the vids Jason

I suppose it’s possible. I have seen so interesting crosses with large SA/CA cichlids.
not with the severum but parrots and Midas can easily hybridize

I've had RDs in my family for 20+ years. Even un a 200gallon they would often eat their babies. All of them. We managed to raise 40 of them up to 8inches and then the dad (aka "King") would attack them and momma killing all but one child. His name is "Lucky".. and I had to donate King to local pet shop. He went in the big boy fish tank.
Great parents when they want to be.. but also has no problem with Oden like tendencies.
Mine haven't eaten in weeks. They just sit there and let the babies pick at them. Ahhhhh

I love my red devil, I obtained jim on father's day. He is only 2 inches and resides in a 30 gallon, my plan is to gain a 75 to 90 gallon for him, I believe it's a male, although still to young to determine...

They frequently pick them up from one area and spit them out somewhere else (they are usually alive though) : -).

She has one - they built a giant structure that only she can get in to (buried a fake wood thing that she can get in to). Glad they did the work. : -)

keep em alone- it killed all my africans and the pet store said it was something else(it was tiny there and looked different) it grew up and we knew what it was and before u knew it all fish were dead after one night because of breeding 2 months in
