My tank houses red devil, midas, blood parrots, Carpintis, Texas cichlids, and a pleco. All of which a central cichlids. The bp is a hybrid of central cichlids. Guess this is why they work out well. Also helps to grow them with other tank mates if you want them to co exist with others. Adding a fish of that size to a community tank, even with other centrals, is asking for trouble since it hasn’t been acclimated to having tank mates.
Got 2 breeding carpintis and a red parrot with a common and clown pleco (justly named David and Goliath) and a cory in a 120 gallon. Been doing great for about 4 months now.
Can't wait to get more New World cichlids. Got a 240 gallon tank 1 week ago for FREE, so I'm thinking maybe a jaguar or wolf if I can find 'em. Something big, aggro and Central American.

How do you certify a fish's lineage? They were originally caught in the wild and presumably still are. At what point and under who's authority did some expert say only they can authenticate them?
Put them in a 200 gallon they calm down . Now put them in the small tanks and then they get aggressive.
They may be getting a 300 gallon soon :)
Wouldn't breeding thos 2 together make a flowerhorn I know there's the midevil but I'm sure even that would technically be a flowerhorn cuz breeding these fish together is how flowerhorns r made

I have a 125 with 2 Red Devils and 3 Silver Dollars. Zero issues. I even reach in and pet both Red Devils. I’m sure this is a rare thing but they live happy.

Why do people keep confusing red devil and Midas the same fish. They look different!! Midas has a large round hump on the head while the red devil does not.
This is likely due to the massive amount of interbreeding, 99% of the fish sold in stores that are marked as Red devil is a midevil hybrid. Unless you can get proven lineage of either midas or red devil it's usually classified as a hybrid, and both of these fish do get a nuchal hump.
Devils get humps too
I would say minimum tank size for these fish would be 75g for one. A 55g is really only good enough for a grow out.
75 is better than the 55, I can agree, but the 55 is doable as an absolute minimum as long as we do our part with maintinance. This RD will eventually be in a 125.
I have a 12 inch Red Devil Fish in a 55 gallon tank and had it for 4 years so 55 is good
I’d put one in a 60 breeder before putting one in a 55. 60 is shallow, but the depth (front to back) is better than a 55. 55 tanks are good for community of tropical fish that only get 1-2” big. These fish need surface area more than height.
@@Subi_doo I said a 55g is only good for a grow out, not a permanent home. IMO a 75g is the minimum for one Red Devil.
Red devil & midas could be recognized by its 'labia' or lips that differ from midas.

I have a red devil that lives with my oscar 2 blood parrots brown knife fish highfin pleco snowflake pleco a giant comet goldfish bought as food that became their friend and now apparently a minnow that I have had for 2 months and hes not aggressive towards them nor me and luckily him and my oscar like my scape
More than likely there is enough large fish in there that he is starting to worry more about himself thank being king of the tank, your pretty lucky that it's working out!
Oh I knew it was a game of chance but baby red devil vs full grown oscar hes not taking his throne anytime soon oscar still does his rounds every morning keeping everyone in check I love him lol

It's easy to tell difference between Midas n Reds , the Red devils noses and mouth are more pointed as Midas have thicker nose n mouth
Lmao! He’s like “NOOOOOOOOO! My TANK! I don’t want those stupid plastic plants back there! Gonna just push ALL this sand up against this here wall!” It’s such a waste of a tank to keep cichlids like this. Same issue w flowerhorns. & tanks are SO expensive!
I don't think it's a waste, but to each their own, also most of my tanks I get are free off of Facebook that need repair work so the prices are good lol

I successfully had a Chinese Algae Eater in my my Red Devil until fry came along. Those parents were so protective and beat him up.
I'm fairly well convinced the only thing you might be able to get away with long term is a large pleco
They grow very slow they normally aren't big eaters
60 years has destroyed the lineage of many species of fish.
For sure, the same has happened with dogs, all the selective breeding and inbreeding to get certain traits had had serious impacts
@@TrafishAquatics very true I was looking at imagines of dog breeds 100 years ago and the same dog breed today and it's sad, 100 years ago they looked much more healthy and now they can also bone structure problems, heart problems, jaw problems and so on

It's more likely a midevil hybrid as I have no way to prove the lineage.

Where are we “venting” these? Venting I thought was when u poke a hole into their swim bladder so they can actually swim back to the bottom of the ocean???
Venting is looking at their butthole to see the shape of their vent, if the shape is a U it's female, if it's a V it's male. The poking the swimbladder is called aspirating a swimbladder

Chances are pretty low that it would work, i met a gentleman with a 730 gallon aquarium where he had multiple different African cichlids as well as large South American cichlids, a Pacu and redtail catfish, along with a red devil. The Red devil ran that tank lol.

What I find with Red Devils from my experience, even with a big tank, they are the biggest assholes at the sub-adult period (6 inches or so)... will happily bully and beat the crap of other cichlids in the tank quite a lot when they feel like it during that period in their life. However, when they hit adulthood (around 12 inches) they become very chilled, and for most of the time don't care about other cichlids in the tank (given that the others are smaller size) during that time they care more about the owner interaction than other cichlids in the tank.

My red devil doesn't have a tail and he also has a tank mate which is a blue tiger gournami I didn't expect them to get along but they're like best friends
Sometimes we just get lucky but I'm glad to hear they get along
The only time I've successfully kept a red devil with anything was a small one with full grown mbunas because the mbunas kept killing new additions but the red devil was the only thing that could survive. They're mean as hell. after I broke down the mbunas tank and put the red devil by himself he killed any new additions. I may have dropped a garden cricket or two in there and they didn't last long either
Yeah they are very difficult to keep with anything because of the aggressiveness
You can tell the difference by the lips Midas have a smaller upper lip and Red Devils have big lips
This is a good tip however if they're a hybrid midevil it could be either way.

Not really the red devil has fleshy and pointed lips this is the key of the A. Labiatus. Colors do not tell anything in my opinion although I have a red/orange red devil cichlid

It was interesting actually it is not very hard to tell the difference between the Midas cichlid and Red Devil cichlid even though they are in the "Red Devil" complex with a few other cichild from the same lakes. The Midas cichlid has a different niche from the Red Devil cichlid which is true with other Cichlids from the "Red Devil" Complex. While I have no clue, other than I learned in this video, about the "Medieval" cichlid. I assume is like Sunfish in North America fish in the Red Devil Complex mix in the wild. But they are not as competitive as the parents are in the niches the parent fish was designed to be. Therefore liked the mixed Sunfish the mixed "Red Devils," i.e. Medieval die out in the wild. This is true when Florida bass is introduced to Texas lakes that hold Northern bass, the mixture, sometimes called the Gorilla bass or the Tiger bass combines the best traits of both in the first generations but successive generation of bass lose their Florida Bass genes and deteriorate into a bass with only Northern bass genes which can stand cooler water better.

I guess I got lucky. I got a red devil from a breeder and put him in my community cichlid tank and he is the sweetest fish. I can put my hand in and he will swim through it and he gets picked on by my green terrors and jack Dempsey
How often do you feed him? I have him with goldfish and Minnows.
Well i gave it a shot, cut the shrimp up small he ate three pieces and then turned his nose up at it . I will try again in a couple of days. thanks James
I found that Red devils can be very picky with their foods, especially when given the opportunity at new foods.

I have changed his food up the last couple of days was strictly only feeding the hikari floating pellets. Bought some of the north fin products and wanted to try some shrimp when i seen your video i had to try.

In my experience they gain size fairly quickly I got sherbert at about 3 in and in about 6 months he is now at 10 in

Mbunas are usually good tank mates for Red Devils because they are fast enough to get away from them and are really mean too. You can have a lot of African cichlids and a single red devil and that combo works out pretty well in my experience.

Agree 100% fish with similar personalities and that are faster. Mbunas can get beat up tho
