    Car insurance agent here! This is a great tip for staying in a hotel, which is where most of my customers are when their car gets stolen overnight!!! One customer thought parking outside of his room window was enough to keep his car safe but it probably only helped their equipment more by being close to the fob!

    This is not the only way thieves can steal your car these days. Sometimes they don't need to scan for your key , all they do is find an entry point into the can bus system that is quick , usually through the headlight as with the lexus , on range rovers its usually at the rear hatch where ive seen them actually cut a bit of the metal out to gain access . Once they have access to the wiring to the headlight they now have full access to your car and can just open the doors and start the car. Putting your key in a box or turning off the comfort access will not stop your car from being stolen. What you need is an aftermarket immobiliser that protects the can bus system and will not allow the car to start or it can also lock the gearbox so that as soon as a gear is selected it will cut out the engine . You are required to enter a pin code everytime you get in your car that only you know , it can contain quite a lot of buttons that are situated in your car , your steering wheel buttons, your window buttons, stereo buttons etc etc. dont know about the US or canada but here in UK one such immobiliser is a ghost 2 , very small and discreet it is hidden amongst your wiring systems anywhere in the car and doesn't emit any signal so cannot be scanned for its location. If fitted correctly by an approved installer it is almost impossible to find and disarm. Thieves dont have hours to look for such a thing . If you've got your pride and joy sat outside at night get something like this as well as all the other measures listed in the video. Its a small price to pay for piece of mind . Paying $50,000 plus for a car and not securing it for a small amount of cash is stupid in my opinion.

      My car was recently stolen. AirTag helped me locate it and get it back. Lexus wanted me to wait until they had a police report in the system before they would provide me a location. understandable but who wants to wait for that after your car has been stolen.

  • @DarrellGrainger
    @DarrellGrainger ปีที่แล้ว +13

    If you want to leave the passive system on but stop people from stealing the signal from your wireless remote, you can put it in battery depletion mode. This will turn the remote off. It was intended to save the remote's battery but it also prevents it from sending out a signal. No need for a faraday box or wrapping your key in tin foil. To take it out of battery depletion mode, just press any button on the remote.
    That said, your way is better because you don't have to remember to turn the remote off.
    Personally, I like the passive system. My dealer put in a third party engine disabler. If you don't turn off the engine disabler and attempt to drive the car (even with the proper remote) it won't run. I prefer this method because thieves can now program new remotes based on the VIN number of your car. In other words, they take a picture of your VIN, use that to program a new remote and steal your car. Your method will not stop this sort of attack.

    • @carquestions

      Works great on the new style remote (from 2019) Darrel but unfortunately there is no such feature on the older model remotes - Good info - Thanks - Cheers from Canada!

    If you don't have that setting in your customizable settings, (my 2014 ES does not), there is an alternate method. Instead of stopping the car from looking for the FOB, stop the FOB from listening for the car. You do that by holding the lock button on the FOB and at the same time, press the UNLOCK button twice. The red light on the FOB should blink four times in slow spacing and the FOB is now turned OFF. Touching any button on the FOB will then turn it back on. Make sure you also have the second FOB (your partner's or spare) also turned OFF. This has the added advantage of saving the battery in the FOB. I use this system in public parking lots, airports, hotels, etc. (I also keep the spare FOB in a steel desk drawer).

    The old style mechanical locks for the steering wheel or brake pedal are also very effective. If you think they're awkward to use, it's even more awkward to have your car stolen.
    You, or your mechanic, can also rig a cutout switch between the fuel pump power wire or in the ignition wire. Put the switch under the dash or somewhere else. Car won't run without fuel. You can also open the hood and remove the fuel pump relay from the fuse box -- car ain't goin' anywhere like that. Simple things that can save you a lot of grief.

    Also wrap your extra key FOB in aluminum foil three to four layer of foil when not in use. The foil will distrupt the key FOB's signal. You can test it out by wrapping your key FOB with aluminum foil and stand next to your car. NOTHING works! That's how you prevent thieves from reading your key FOB's signal.

    • @Shawn-ky2tw
      @Shawn-ky2tw ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Actually, there is a much easier way. The manual will tell you how to disable the signal to save on FOB battery. For example, on my Lexus remote if you hold the lock key and press the unlock key twice in a row, you get the FOB light blinking 4 times to confirm that wireless signal is disabled. It will be reenabled once you hit any key on the FOB afterwards.

One technique works and defeats all of them. Lock the hood and use a remote battery relay. Without power it isn’t going anywhere. You can also lock your brakes. Basically they will need a tow truck

    For Toyotas and Lexus if you hold the lock button down on your key FOB and at the same time press the unlock button 2x's this puts your key FOB in battery saving mode. Now you can't open the door as a convenience. To unlock the door just press the unlock button. Do you know if this also hides your signal from your vehicle if you don't have "elec" key in settings?

    Easy fix get an RFID box to throw your key in. Or sleeve to keep it in. Theres a $25 push to start Kit with a hidden RFID KILL SWITCH. WORKS INCREDIBLE. You have to use one of the RFID Keychain tags it comes with and swipe it wherever you hide the receiver behind any interior panel and it'll beep to notify you the built in immobilizer is unlocked and able to start the vehicle. Bought it and installed it on my old tahoe that got stolen once and they messed up my ignition so using the key didn't matter you could start it without the key. I installed this bad boy super eazy to do as well. Forgot to tell the valet about it and after a half hour and 3 valets trying to get my vehicle started with no luck I had to go with them to start it up.

    Keep in mind this is only ONE attack vector. Good security means approaching it from many angles. Thieves can reprogram using the OBD2 port...there are locks for that. There is a new special type of wheel lock hat makes it much more difficult for removal and has a built in alarm....IGLA security system requires a special password in order for it to start and move the vehicle if you leave a started car and re-enter.
    I am actually keeping my key in a pouch and using Remote Connect to lock/unlock the vehicle, then using the keyfob next to start button for starting. No more smartkey entry but this feels more secure. This works even if the remote is in battery saving mode, which is interesting.

    My new Mazda CX-5 has the ability to stop the key fob from always sending out a signal. You press the lock button on the key fob 4 times in a row then a 5th time while holding it, you then hear a double beep from the car which tells you the walk up unlock and push start no longer function.
    You now use the buttons on the key fob to lock and unlock, and to start the car you hold the key fob hard against the start button while pushing on the start button. I think the start button is reading a chip in the key fob.
    Lexus and Toyota can apparently be unlocked and started by a thief accessing the wiring loom from behind the front headlight. This is accessed simply by pulling the front corner plastic bumper away. It’s frighteningly easy and quick for them. They obviously need to know what they’re doing though.
    I’ve also made an ingenious brake pedal lock and fitted a metal plate to cover the computer port under the dashboard. I’m now thinking of some type of basic alarm that’s powered off a seperate battery and activates a latching relay to sound a very very loud piezo siren inside the cabin to disorient the thief. Just trying to work out how to activate the alarm. Maybe a pressure sensor under the driver seat cushion or a reed switch on the drivers door. Or maybe a mercury switch placed somewhere that the thief would have to move.

    What happens if the key fob runs out of battery? I understand you can still unlock/lock the car with the physical key, but will it affect turning the car on when the fob is touched to the start/off button, or will the transponder still be able to send a signal to start the car?

      Hi Ray - If you read the manual super close - buried deep in the back are user settings and on that model year it shows the dealer can change that but not you - so you need to take it in. The funny thing is the same car in the UK comes with special cybersecurity software that cannot be hacked - check out UK UN R155 - it's the law over there but not here - I think here they will charge us for it in the near future - see my latest video - Cheers from Canada!

    hope you can answer my question... after you turn off the elec key option, the thief copy the signal from the relay attack can they also unlock the car with the push button on their newly programed keyfob? ( this can only tell the car not to listen, but the fob is still broadcasting right?)

    • @carquestions
      @carquestions  ปีที่แล้ว

      they don't reprogram anything when stealing it - they just boost a signal - they make a new key once they get it to a safe place

    • @KCho200
      @KCho200 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually they break the window whether it’d be the sunroof or driver window. From there they’re able to use a programmer with an extra key to start the car right up.

    • @Moe-xn2cf

      @@carquestions so when they make the new key fob, do they also somehow change the signal to where the old key fob doesn’t work? my car was recently stolen and they broke the window for whatever reason and I asked the dealer when I got the car back the same night, to reprogram either the old fob or a new one with a new signal for the car, totally new cause I don’t know if they copied the old signal. I’m also wondering if they accessed my fob signal by making a new fob via the OBD port?

    You can stop the fob from transmitting by holding the lock button down and then press unlock twice on the fob. Then when your ready to use the fob just press unlock to go back to normal.
