Steam Deck: Play Dragon's Lair and Space Ace with DAPHNE via EmuDeck

- The two most prominent laserdisc video games from the 80's are back - and on your Steam Deck; playable via EmuDeck + Daphne proper emulation!
Note: Go start downloading "The Big Pack" now - it can take 4 hours to come down. If torrents don't freak you out, the torrent download will probably be 20 minutes. You exit the game like any other EmuDeck title
Disclaimer: I'm using SSH with Directory Opus to perform this tutorial. Neither tool is required, and if you're skilled with Dolphin File Manager on the Deck, you could probably do this all on Deck. You can also accomplish the task without Directory Opus on the PC but as you will see, there are reasons why I chose it. There is a recap toward the end of the PC segment that will show a quick list of what we did.
Power User Addendum: This pack includes the original laserdisc dumps of the games - they are not HD nor 16x9; this is normal. If you have the DL Trilogy Remaster project files (sorry, cannot provide those) in HD and/or 16x9, you can use them instead of the ones provided. You still need the two "helper" files though. There are other games included in The Big Pack you can also copy over and play using the exact same process as we did with Dragon's Lair and Space Ace. You can reuse the helper files I included - just rename them to fit the game prefix.
After finishing this video, I realize there were extra files included in the lair.daphne and ace.daphne folders. You may remove the space-taking .bf files and the .md5 files.

Daphne was the only emulator I couldn't get to work and thanks to your video did it work.
In fact, I can now play ALL the Daphne games, where as with previous versions I could only play Space Ace and Dragons Lair.

If you guys stumbled upon this video, it means you are willing to spend time to tweak for Nostalgia's sake - check out New Retro Arcade : Neon - it's a VR arcade thing - but it takes me exactly back to when I was a kid and on my birthday my dad would hand me a fistful of quarters and let me loose into the arcade. I can't explain how powerful the sense of standing in a VR arcade is with all the attraction screens on and their sound blaring out at you. Check some videos on youtube and add it to your long term to do list
Thank you for doing this video. I got Dragons Lair and Space Ace running on my steam deck which is awesome. I have the remaster project files. How do I get these files to work on the Steam Deck? Also, is there a way to get the game to play the scenes in specific order vs just randomly? I've seen this done on a real DL machine using Daphne and Dexter.
I haven't gotten around to doing the remastered files (I have great AI upscaled ones too). You would have to use a different rom set based on how you want to play. I use the "common arcade version". You'll need to figure out how to rom swap. :)

Hi! I used this tutorial to get all my old Daphne games running, however I am running into an odd issue. lair2 ran perfectly one time, but it will not run in ES-DE in any circumstance afterward. I'm guessing the .dat file is corrupt and needs to be deleted so it can be reparsed. Do you know the argument to reparse a game (or where the .dat files are located) they do not appear to be in the hypseus install directory or my SD cards Emulation

I've never actually said any of those games up. I'm sorry. You could try just following the same sort of process I did for space Ace

One minor issue I had was when the game was started, it didnt do the parsing, and never started. This is because I had already unzipped the Hypseus-singe files locally on my pc and I had just copied them over rather than copying over the tar file and letting the steamdeck unpack them - my method did not set the folder/file permissions correctly, so I had to set the folder to 777 cascading to all files wiin the folder. This resolved my issue....but it was entirely caused by me not following your guide to the letter !

Thanks for the clarification. While I didn't know that would happen, I definitely advise everybody to follow to the letter exactly what you see in the video. In Windows there's usually a bunch of different ways to skin a cat and it doesn't matter how you get there. With Linux unfortunately usually the devil is in the details which is why I do these video guides to make sure everybody can see every step of the way and every nuance of what I might do. Written guides tend to leave a lot of that stuff out, so that's why I feel video is a better medium for these particular types of tutorials. I'm very pleased you got it going. Nothing like playing Space Ace on Steam Deck. It is still surreal.
@@Darkuni Space Ace does indeed play extremely well on the deck. The timings are spot on, which is not always the case on other (commercial) versions of the game. The Switch version of the game for example really throws me as I have to do everything a fraction of a second later, and that's horrible to get used to.
@@rdasd411 yeah we're using actual emulation here. Commercial releases rarely use emulation if ever. Which means it's all open to developer interpretation. I worked with digital leisure on several releases of Dragons lair and Space Ace over the years to ensure that their move windows and timings were correct.
Do you know how to choose a different rom, like if I want to use dle21 instead? Thanks...
I haven't tried it, but assume you swap out lair.zip by the emulator.
I followed your guide and got Dragon's Lair and Space Ace up and running. I also did Cliff Hanger as it was one of my favorites. I was able to get the game to run but it doesn't seem like the controls are working. Cliff hanger had a 4 way joystick and 2 buttons. One was hand and one was foot. The game starts with you running out of a casino and you need to jump some barriers. The correct response should be foot. But none of the buttons seem to work. Any ideas?
Yeah I only mapped controls for the games in the video. I imagine you could add more buttons to the config ...
Inside the helper pack is the input ini. I made notes are the top.

I figured it out for Cliff Hanger. There was a line in the hypinput.ini file
KEY_BUTTON2 = SDLK_LALT SDLK_s 0
I changed it to read
KEY_BUTTON2 = SDLK_LALT SDLK_s 2
The "foot" was then mapped to button B on the steam deck. Everything seems to be working.
I used your guide and I was able to get all the games except one to load. My issue now is the video playback game is choppy. I'm not sure if this an emulation station setting issue or the games. Do you have any idea what would cause the gameplay to be choppy?
Which game? My laserdisc game love doesn't extend much past the Bluth games. It could be the video files vs transfer speed of the card ... I'd need more info ...
@@Darkuni it's fine. It must be the dock I'm using. When I play on the steam deck screen it's fine. Thanks for the instructions. They were very helpful. I will need to modify the .ini file for a second fire button for games like Cobra Command.

Hello again. Just got Daphne to work on my Steam deck thanks to your great vid. Only problem is Dragon's Lair 2 refuses to load up and ive checked and rechecked and all files are named correctly and in the right places. Any suggestions?
I mean you see in the video it's working. Using the same files you've got. There must be something missing or in the wrong spot ...
Dragon's Lair and Space Ace work no problem. I also loaded Super Don Quixote and again it's brilliant using your help pack and renaming the two files.
It's just Dragons Lair 2 that refuses. I checked the rom and files and everything seems to be present, in place and named correctly.
It's perplexing.

@@DarkuniTried the first link for game files but it was down. Then tried the internet archive link, got to the end of the download and it wouldn't work after nearly 3hrs downloading. Frustrating to say the least. Oh well, back to the drawing board.
your hypinput file fixes controls when you're using steam deck controls in portable mode. but how do you make an xbox controller work when you're playing the steam deck docked? controls aren't recognized in dock mode with a controller, such as the Xbox controller, connected.
funny thing is i realized SDLK and such meant the built in Steam Deck controls. So I unplugged my deck from the dock so the picture showed up on the Steam Deck and not my TV and all the controls worked.
funny thing again. i changed the controller order in the steam deck menu and then the xbox controller works. daphne controls are not recognized by an xbox or connected controller unless the xbox controller is set for controller 2.
is there any way to fix this within your hypinput file?
This goes back aways but I usually record footage for videos using a controller.
I believe you have to launch ESDE with the controller you want to use and it should behave...?
in emudeck and in emulation station is shows as LaserDisc not Daphne. when I select one of the games it don't loads. Help

and when I select the game it dont load just pops up with launching game dragons lair and then goes back to the menu
Check the es_log.txt file and see what it says failed.

Not trying to be a pain here, but EmuDeck is a installer script - it isn't a program. The question doesn't make sense as posed. Emulation Station is installed as part of EmuDeck's installation script. So yes, I'm playing Daphne on "EmuDeck".

Still surprised and shocked you never got the Arcade1up Dragon's Lair cabinet. One of my other friends got it signed by Don Bluth at a convention. I still find it hilarious Don doesn't seem to play the game and hasn't even finished it. I find that hilarious... It also proves my point that he didn't really care about video games and really had nothing to do with developing the game. It was by Luck that it truly did become a hit based on the fact it was just new gimmick of being able to control cartoon movies scenes. But sadly if this was just a 2D game it probably would have failed. 🤣

I have the ROM in my hypseus-singe/roms folder, and the cobra.daphne and lair2.daphne folders on my SD card in the daphne ROM folder. Thanks in advance!
There should be some little text files for each of the games you'll need to create a new one of those as well.
If anyone is looking to add singe games like Time Gal or Ninja Hayate, this is how I got them working:
Emulation/roms/daphne/timegal.singe (put timegal.singe, timegal.txt & timegal.commands here)
-edit the timegal.txt in the 1st line, put the path below:
/Home/Applications/hyseus-singe/singe/timegal
(Put all the imgs, m2v, .ogg, etc here)
This is using the hypseus emulator (a SDL2 fork of daphne). Full Singe 2 32bit oversize overlays are now supported too :)
Hello, I made these actions but Timegal doesnt work, it returns immediately to menu.
You’ll have to ensure that MYDIR in timegal.singe is configured to the correct path else the game will fail to load. Managed to get Ninja Hayate and Time Gal to work on my Emudeck
