The Mummy Movie Review

  • Back in 1999, Brendan Fraser starred in a "modern" re-imagining of the classic Mummy subgenre of movies. Horror, adventure, history and the supernatural. Mummy movies were a staple of classic horror cinema, but were effectively non-existent from the 1960s onward.
Still, The Mummy was an attempt to modernize the classic tales for a newer audience.. and modernize it did! With top-of-the-line CGI that looked fantastic at the time, and now? It stands out like a sore thumb and very solidly dates this movie as being from the late 90s.
Still, it's one of the first movies people think about when they think of Brendan Fraser, so how does it fare overall in entertainment?

Honestly, the CGI isn't even that terrible. They really poured money and their souls into this movie and it shows. Plus it's not over the top. Maybe it's my inner child going back to the first time I watched this movie and me just being so amazed because I've never seen anything in a movie like that before. I still get the creeps when he is a rotten walking corpse.

And it spawned an animated series, which I find did a better job with Alex O'Connell than Mummy Returns and Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Not that I hate Returns, but it did repeat a lot of the first movie while also adding in a lot not needed, like Evie being a reincarnated Nefytiri, so we could have a cat fight with Anck-Sunamun. But it's an okay follow-up, unlike Dragon Emperor.

Before Stephen Sommers was picked to direct the film, Wes Craven, John Landis, John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, Clive Barker, George Romero, Mick Garris, and Joe Dante were considered for the project back in the early 90's.
Sommers a huge fan of the original film, was picked after his last movie, DEEP RISING bombed at the box office in 1998.
Before Brendan Fraser was cast, Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Brad Pitt were considered.

CRT TV's really helped smooth the cgi. Still, I wouldn't change a thing about this movie.

Check out the Summer of Freddy vs. Jason. He goes through all the Freddy and Jason movies on his way to the crossover, it's great

Evie is also a Bond girl....kinda. Her hubby is Daniel Craig. While they have a daughter together that brings up another question - with all the women that JB has slept with, how many kids does HE (well that character) have?

This movie was such a big part of my childhood. It’s a great blend of spooky and swashbuckling.

I do miss the editor and behind the scene notes at the end of your videos, but I understand why you took them out. I just liked reading the little things about your processes making the review or just other little things you wanted to mention.

Regarding the cat -- I imagine a deleted scene where Benny steals the white cat after that last encounter and Rick and gang can't find another in time.

My kitty would be excellent at scaring mummies. His name is Karl, and he’s so very fierce. And extra cuddly. Mummies fear cuddles.
