The found footage film seen round the world, The Blair Witch Project had a massive marketing campaign that three filmmakers were lost in the woods in 1994, and their footage was found one year later... but they are still missing! Except they weren't, they were actors and very much still alive. But hey! Everyone thought it was real, so why let things like facts get in the way?

Months later, he was found reviewing the sequel.

I was 29 when the film came out and at the time it was everywhere. Everyone was talking about it. Was it real? Was it not? The on line campaign made a huge impact and gave the film a lot of credibility. I saw it in a packed theatre with people genuinely freaking out. And yes, some people leaving because they couldn't handle the shaky cam. Later on when the hype died down many people pointed out that Blair Witch ripped off "The Last Broadcast" from a year prior. Blair Witch was the more notable film and made the film makers tons of money and launched a genre that still pops a new film out from time to time. I look back upon the film now as quaint. An experiment that blew up in a huge way. To put this in perspective I saw The Exorcist in the theatre when they re-released it for its 25th Anniversary. When it came to the scary parts the audience I saw it with laughed. Probably because it had been parodied so much that it lost the shock value that it would have had in 1974. Looking at Blair Witch now the film has honestly lost its novelity.
Damn, I was the exact same age and the exact same thing happened at my local cinema (Swansea Odeon in South Wales).
It's like a good joke. When you first see/hear it, it's one of the best things ever! After you've heard/seen it twice or thrice it's shit.

Exactly, It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, the Internet wasn’t nearly as prolific and social media didn’t exist so people actually thought this was real because of the marketing....I was around 16 at the time but yeah people were freaked out by this movie and honestly at that time it gave me chills as well, It has aged horribly...But people thought it was real for a while even after it was out, in today’s information age you could never get away with marketing like that.... while there had been a few previous Movies filmed in that style, there was no found footage genre so there was no tedium, and it came off as super realistic

Off topic, when we seeing the godzilla king of the monsters video with creepy? It must happen because I need another mothera reaction.
When Heather was screaming "What was that?" There was a guy in the woods, but She didn't film it.
There is a theory that the guys intended to take heather out into the woods and kill her, and it was them doing all the weird shit. When the Josh went missing, he went to the house, and hid upstairs, then the Mike goes downstairs, drops the camera and stands in the corner, so when heather goes down she sees that, which distracts her as Josh sneaks down and whacks her over the head. Then they do whatever they were planning to her.
Yeah but both fairly poor and regui, non criminal guys being able to fake their deaths and vanish and stay on the run for murdering Heather? All they had to do was push her down the stairs or a log and drown her...
And the backpacks found in the stone work?
The best theory I read, and it's backed up with the ACTUAL sequel and game, is that the entity in the forest has pushed them back through time... Thats why they went in a circle, that's why the road and trails weren't there... There's loads more to the the theory and it really fits. It's explained just as an evil entity that manifested differently for everyone...
Just remember to drink with the grain of the liquor when you start in on the beer. You don't want this to turn into a jim lahey style review

You forgot to mention things didn't get worse till AFTER one of the rock piles was knocked over.
I always thought the movie is way creepier with the theory that the 2 dudes used the doc as a way to carry out a murder on a random girl and they stage everything in the woods while she sleeps so that the footage can’t convict them, allowing them to disappear without the police seeing them as suspects when the footage is found
Dumb theory, all three of them were together when the tent was attacked from the outside

the Blair Witch Project is one of those "you had to be there" movies. Opening weekend, seeing it in the theater with a bunch of people who had no idea what was going on, the tension translating into the audience literally looking around at one another, all the way up to the end and the sudden drop of expectations.... it was great. A fun movie to put on with people who may not know of the hype.
Decker, you inspire me with every video! Stay strong dude!

I enjoyed this movie a lot. I remember there was a website of the faux legend with interviews, history, and pics that really added to the story that this was 'real' found footage of a doomed crew.
I think it was all part of their internet campaign, which is pretty smart, to build interest.

One of my favorite of Decker’s reviews. Entertaining and made me laugh several times.
16:45 The directors were giving them incorrectly drawn maps that led them down the wrong routes and trails. Granted, that would also require the three of them to have no sense of direction, but we all know that some people in the world can't find their way around even with a correctly drawn map.
Seriously, some people can't even follow street signs.
Yeah the and the dead drops of supplies they would leave them never had enough so they were always somewhat hungry, thirsty and generally irritated.
The only good part about this 'film' is that it's the reason The Scooby Doo Project exists. Shown over multiple commercial breaks one year on Cartoon Network, it's since been compiled together (more or less complete...) on various TH-cam channels. It does lose a bit of its charm if you watch it that way, but it's still far better than THIS. Hell, it's far better than this, THIS' sequel, any future sequels, and probably the game...

So, I really enjoy your reviews. Even on ones that I love that you shit on lol including this one. But I remember my cousin coming over to tell me mom about TBWP after he saw it in theaters, and you have to remember, at the time, when found footage started and there was this sense of reality with the internet, it had NEVER been done before. I agree that found footage films after this didn’t hit the mark (cloverfield, super 8, etc) but using the internet and fake documentaries in the nineties? Credit where credit is due. They may not have made an amazing film, but with the relatively new medium of internet videos and stories, TBWP will always hold a special place in my heart, because of how I felt the first time seeing it. I recently got to see Halloween (original John Carpenter) on the big screen in a movie theater, and it made me see the movie in a completely different way. TBWP was a movie that was perfect for its time, but cannot stand the test of time after the explosion of the internet.

This movie doesn't get enough credit for the scares and acting. Josh's screams with the implication of what Heather found wrapped in his shirt is still horrifying to this day.

I got a sudden flashback from when I was taking photography in college! Grocery stores would kick you out on your ass if they thought you were taking pictures or filming. They were afraid you were trying to expose them or something!! That certainly has changed since EVERYONE has a camera in their phones now!!! The also discouraged us from bothering people on the streets...
