One of the biggest hits of 2019, Joker broke records for box office earnings on comparatively small budgets. It also did not result in any kind of.. well, things I simply cannot describe in the description without risking a yellow dollar sign on the whole video, despite what many articles assumed. This is neither here nor there though, the important question is... is the movie really that amazing?

The only thing that came out media wise from Joker was people dancing on the stairs. No copycats, no killers. Nothing but dancing.

Exactly. I had to take care of myself since about the age of 5 and was thrilled when I reached age 8 and had the ability to walk the mile with money taken out of my opiate addict and alcoholic mentally ill mother to the grocery store and would buy cheap rice, the cheapest meat I could find, etc. and would cook for myself while Mommy lay passed out on the floor. 🙄 It's funny that it was better to get the shit kicked out of me by a sober woman for pouring her booze down the drain than it was to spend whole days by myself while she would only come to long enough to swallow more pills with gin then pass back out. Thank goodness it was acceptable in the 90's for a 10 year old on crutches to ride the bus by herself so I would be able to go to the library and get books so I'd not go completely mad. Horror, Sci-Fi, and Fantasy books were the only thing that kept me going. I'd get money for my birthday from family to go buy clothes at thrift stores I found along the bus routes I took and when she started pulling a gun on me for laughs I found many comfortable places to sleep in the bushes around town.
As Decker said, it makes things so much better when people tell you to "Let it go" and stop having panic attacks, nightmares, flashbacks, and bouts of depression where you're not really sure why you continue to try because whenever you reach out for help you're told you're exaggerating, faking, or just looking for attention and an excuse to be lazy.
It's even better when I started having orthopedic surgeries at age 10 and need a hip replacement that no one will give me until age 50 so the PTSD combined with the chronic unending pain of sitting, standing, walking, and even laying down makes it that much harder to find joy in any activity. 🙄
Nothing better than having people that didn't help you in the first place tell you to STFU because everyone else has it way worse than you while you try your best to simply go through the bare motions of life and cling to every moment of happiness because you know as soon as you laugh someone will tell you "See, you're not depressed, you just need to think more happy thoughts."

The scene where Bruce’s parents are killed in this movie is rather interesting. In the 1989 Batman film, Bruce’s parents are killed by the joker. Whereas in the comic books and the Dark Knight trilogy, his parents are killed by Joe Chill. However in this movie, the jokers act inspires Joe chill to kill Thomas and Martha Wayne. Thus in a way, the joker killed Bruce’s parents.

Was Suicidally depressed as a young adult due to the extreme bulling I got from my schoolmates. For me watching this film was less about the "plot" or delving into the specifics of mental illness and more a character study about the emotions and isolation one goes through when in that kind of place. The bathroom dance, as its referred to, was so moving I wept in silence in the theater. The emotions on display and the music took me back to some dark times I had been through and some really dark feelings that now in my healthier state of being I haven't looked back on in sometime. For me sometimes a movie is more about the emotions it makes you feel than the logic of its story or world. So Joker gets a full house 5/5 all around.

I saw this movie 3 times in theatres. Each and every time I watched it, I brought another one of my friends. Their reactions to certain scenes, especially the Murray murder, was the same as mine: this movie blew us away. Although it crams a lot in its runtime and some aspects of the illness are kind of superficial, I still truely believe that this move really tried hard to justify each and every action Arthur/ Happy takes. The focus on 1 character and the tragedies of his life, was a wonderfull take on the phenomenon that is 'the Joker'. I'll probably watch it a lot again.

Another good take on a Joker origin story (albeit in an Alternate Universe in which the Wayne parents were in league with organized crime) is the Telltale Games series, which has you encounter him as "John Doe" in Arkham itself during the first game, and then throughout the second game where your decisions shape whether he becomes the Clown Prince of Crime or whether he becomes The Joker, crime-fighting crusader! Although that's *his* version of a crime-fighting crusader, so... "The bodycount begins to rise."
Seriously, it is *astounding* just how good a job they did with that premise.

I really liked it, it was an interesting take on the character, shot in an visually interesting artistic style, probably the most realistic acting I've seen in a while, really gets into the grim and gritty of living in Gotham, seen from a different perspective than usual. (Yes, I know not the most detailed description of the film, but it's what popped into my head when I saw the notification,) showing that the classic Killing Joke based philosophy of the Joker that it takes just one bad day for a good man to become like himself, really isn't that hard to believe, with the reveal partway through the movie that not all we see is really happening in universe, like his relationship with the neighbour lady not being real.

Thankfully I know all his tells now so I always try to get him in to get his meds checked, but it can be so hard when the social worker talks to him for 5 mins and sends him to a freaking rehab instead of calling me or the police to talk about our mental health petition......still pissed about that.

I find this movie to be above average. It's competently made and Joaquin Phoenix is amazing as usual, but outside of his performance, the movie isn't all that remarkable.
For a movie that's made out to be dark and disturbing, I found it to be pretty tame. The story also struck me as a bit shallow and surface level with the presentation of its themes and characters. It feels very edgelord like with its writing.
Lastly, I think the movie undermines its efforts to be seen as a serious standalone movie with its connections to the Batman mythos. Like, you could remove the Waynes from the movie altogether and actually improve the film.
    I'd give it a 3.5/5.

It was a dark time in my life, and my particular diagnosis had me emotionally at max settings, and when it became too much, all I could do was laugh hysterically, despite feeling absolutely destroyed. He has the same social worker in Arkham as he had before embracing his Joker identity.
They both looks much older, Joaquin has some grey on his hair and in his beard, forwarding the thought that time has passed since the last shot where the mob idolized him.
I took this as a future vision by the point where Bruce has already become Bats and has got Joker into Arkham where he resides just like in the comics, before becoming a nuisance again.

@The Rue Morgue And your point is? Plenty of movies are controversial when they come out. This is no exception. People have always been reactionary when it comes to this kind of stuff.

That's just it, this film was not controversial.
The media made it clear they hate (straight) White men.
That's why they zealously attacked this movie.

If what you said was true,

Thanks for such a thorough review. Wasn't really interested in this particular version of the Joker and the topics would have been too hard to watch, but I've been very interested in the details of the movie. Now I'm part of it, without having to take part in it. As someone that has to work very hard to stay positive and find joy in this world, I don't really watch intense emotional movies or movies dark for the sake of darkness. So...I haven't seen many DC movies. You presented a Joker movie I could actually watch, thanks man.

Great video. Funny and right on the money. I agree with your overall assessment also: it was incredibly well done, but it left me a little cold. It felt empty and shallow.
Except upon seeing it the second time, and realizing the "unreliable narrator", I was able to add something in my head canon that at least entertained me (not implying that this was what the filmmakers intended):
What if Arthur Fleck just makes up Batman and the whole story in his mind? What if there never is or will be a Batman in the diagetic world of the movie?
For me, it at least redeems all the Wayne Family stuff, that just felt forced into the movie.
Anyways, great video. Thanks for making it and sharing it.

Are you having any negative thoughts?
11:10 the fast paced is scary!
Decker the movie is all in the joker’s head and a possibility of what he’s origin is, but it’s not known if it’s true or not.
The joker has no origin and he could care less about it. It’s multiple choice.
