They're in the category of perfectly constructed movie entertainment, like Jurassic Park and the first Pirates of the Caribbean. Very fun and re-watchable.
This could have been Indiana Jones if they would have just given the second one a little bit more time to breathe and framed it as a Trilogy to begin with. I can't believe Scorpion King is what came out of this not a million Rick O'Connell Adventures
It was a product of its time, what with The Rock rising in popularity. With Arnold Schwarzenegger moving away from making films and getting more into politics, Hollywood was searching for another rising star to fill the vacuum and The Rock fit the bill as muscled-up action hero.
So after doing some research I found that the giant hamster wheels were commonly used as punishment for prisoners and slaves in that time. They would be forced to run on them prior to assisting in farming and gathering. They actually made them run so long that their skin would turn a ghastly shade of blue before being sent out to farm, which is why this project was originally titled "blue harvest".
So they have them run in the wheel so they are to tired to run while working the fields cuz all the guards are fat and out of shape and wouldn't be able to catch them but if they allow that guy to rest up and he escapes he will run to the next country.
The Amazing Spider Man ones they put up the other week must have way over 100 views from me😂. Closely followed by Justice League and The Scorpion King.

The real Imotep was the architect behind the step pyramid in Saqqar Egypt near Giza. He was also a doctor who wrote about treating trauma. He was also a priest who was later Deiafired as a lesser god after his death. So basically a saint
The first Mummy was the peak of 90s Action/Adventure Comedy. It was virtually perfect in every way. Cast, characters, story, jokes, sets, CGI was great at the time. I loved rewatching it a few years back. Then everything went way too digital. Leaning too hard into the comedy, missing a sense of appeal, mystery, etc.
Times like this, a lot of thought goes into what this decision means and how it will affect the rest of my life. And after a lot of thought, I decided that I wanted to know what it was like to be able to say, “I have seen all FIVE Scorpion King movies.” I have to be honest and say that, yes, I do feel different. It doesn’t make me a better person, but I strangely feel wiser.
Treat Williams (RIP) also pulled off the cocky and street-smart-but-not-quite-smart adventurer archetype in "Deep Rising"; another underrated film from the late-90s. Funnily enough, also an adventure-horror film featuring Kevin J O'Connor in a supporting role.
The first two Mummy movies hit at the right time for me, age-wise. The first one was the perfect amount of scary, and the second was great action. The first two kind of followed the Alien -> Aliens model of horror -> action. I remember going to a friend's birthday party which was a trip to The Mummy Returns in theaters. Upon rewatch, I think it could have been fun to make the primary villain the Scorpion King in the 2nd one, but keep the previous villain-actors around in new roles, like they kind of did with Patricia Velásquez. So, keep her, and Arnold Vosloo, and keep that tradition for all the continuing movies. Would have been a cheeky nod to the Universal Horror style of "familiar face roster"

I can confirm. My friend and I were two young boys, about 9years old, going to to see Spider-Man in 2002 but it was sold out... we watched Scorpion King instead and it was a blast!

The Mummy began an era of movies that lasted for about 5 years, where every single monster or supernatural thing unhinged its jaw and screamed at the camera for absolutely no reason. Literally every movie with a CG monster had them stop, look at the camera, unhinge and holler with a giant floppy mouth like a Looney Tunes gag. For YEARS.

As someone who exclusively studied Middle Eastern politics in grad school, specifically on the life of political prisoners I can assure you the giant hamster wheel is completely authentic. Not only did it serve as a means of exercise for older prisoners who couldn’t handle exposure but what the movie didn’t show is that the wheel would be normally attached to a mechanism connected to a canal that would pump water into neighboring crops near the prisons for harvest season. If a prisoner was able to get a certain amount of water pumped into the ground during the day prisoners would note a blue shimmer radiating from the plants. This would lead to the development of the phrase “Blue Harvest” which was also the working title for the first Star Wars movie.
I love the trope of "give someone you hate a 'curse' that grants them immense power... and, I dunno, maybe makes one of their eyebrows fall off, or they have a mild-to-severe pain in their knee occasionally". Reminds me a bit of the trope where you have a "failed prototype" that inevitably ends up being far superior to the later "finished" model that they actually decided to produce properly.
