I am 55. I finished a 25k race through the rugged desert mountain trails just east of Phoenix, AZ. It was very rugged the last 5 miles with rocks, cacti, uneven terrain, slippery sand, etc. I was euphoric to finish. I finished a similar race in the mountains of Flagstaff at high altitude last June. It's run to do trail races. I'm trying to get back into the campus gym for some last games of pickup basketball before I truly get far too old. I am working on a PhD at Arizona State but haven't gone back into the gym for basketball yet. Back in the mid 1990s, I used to go there about 4 times a week while listening to "Nirvana".
I’m almost 50. Been lifting since age 15. Tried everything. I can attest through experience that this is great advice. If you do this even 2x per week you will get 80 percent of the results you could get by doing a much more complex and frequent routine. It’s really all you ever need unless you want to get obsessive.
Thanks for this video. True a person doesn't need a gym to workout daily. Austin Broer with his father Ted Broer, 68 years old teaches the same thing - working out at home............. Heading to the gym now
More exercise videos! Or even you walking on the treadmill and doing vlog style videos so we can run with you. That would be awesome. Thanks for all the value you've given us. Men of all ages will benefit from your videos
To all who were motivated by this video. Wake 30 minutes early and schedule your work out like it was a business meeting. In a month, you will have a consistent want and drive to work out every day in some fashion. 😊
Great demo, also, to anyone with hip or knee joints pain, work the glutes, they tend to weaken due to a sedentary life style and push the hip joint ball forward into the socket's wall.
Everyone is a master at one exercise where people stop and stare. Mine was tricep dips of body weight plus 80lbs hanging from a belt. I could bang out sets of 10. Ahhh, the good 'ole days of youth.🏋♂️
Interesting, this requires a gym membership unless you build a home gym ($$). I'd say if you going to failure do this when your day is done as the fatigue after will be very real. As an older guy I do some chair pushups (70) then planking , squats holding a dumbbell and curls (3 sets of 45 each arm) the idea being just so I don't become feeble as I age while I watch what goes into my mouth foodwise. Seems to be keeping me in working shape so far. John as we see is in pretty hard shape!
Great video, thanks! How often a week should someone do this routine? My gues it would be 2 - 4x a week depending on your personal fitness fitness level. Please advise. I'd like to start doing it and get the equipment.
The sled is by powerTec i’ve had it for about five years. I think I spent about $1000 for it. I’ve noticed this price is gone up quite a bit. It’s closer to 1500 now. The rack is by a company called Yukon. I’ve had it for 25 years. I bought it because it includes a machine and when I first got it, I thought that I would use the Smith a lot for squatting as it turns out I rarely use it for anything. If I had to purchase over again, I would probably buy more traditional rack. Although this rack does come with a really good high and low pulley as well as a deck, which fits me perfectly so it works well. is a decent quality machine. I think there’s probably better machines at better prices available now.
Hi John. Hope you don’t mind the question , but to be a personal trainer/coach, do you need to be certified? I’ve always been super fit and thought of extending this into a side hustle for extra income . Many thanks in advance.
Sit ups are useless! Farmer carries for true functional strength- core, forearms and traps . Every single guy should do them. Trap Bar deadlift- brilliant exercise for hip-hinge and legs. Barbell squats are terrible for spine compression. Belt squats are infinitely better for older people. You can thank me later once you find out these exercises.
So efficient. Made a 20 minute workout video in 12:35.
thank you John, I am in my mid 40s and always find your videos so insightful and so inspiring.
Thanks
You're a man of many talents, John. Cheers!
But for his ex wife, not enough...
Thanks

Yes, exactly
Great video John! I don't see the link to the incline board.
Thanks for posting this. Nice home gym setup. Just out of curiosity, what brands/companies did you go with on your power rack and leg sled? Thanks.

@@john-griffin Thanks for the info. 👍
You're putting out excellent content. Don't ever go Wes Watson us. 😂
Practical.
Good information! What degree is the squat board at.
It’s adjustable
Where's the link to buy?
I sent a description. It’s not a link to buy. It’s just a link to another video.
Great video especially since they have all these honey traps at the gyms. Someone needs to take a blind guy to the gym to set up a honey trapper.
