Road Test: 2016 Ford Focus RS - The Wait is Over for Ford's AWD Hot Hatch

  • If we told you that a Ford Focus was one of a few legendary vehicles that we’ve pined for over the years, you’d probably think we’re crazy. Unless of course you are familiar with the Focus RS. The “RS” is Ford Europe’s Rally Sport racing division that campaigns in rallycross and road rallies all over the world. So this Focus RS is sort of like what a Shelby Mustang was in the 60’s. Get the picture? Well, we’re about to make that crystal clear.
    The 2016 Ford Focus RS is the first global RS performance vehicle; which means it’s also the first one we’ve gotten here in the States. And to some, the fact that it is the most powerful Focus ever, may be akin to saying it’s the best tasting lima beans they’ve ever eaten. But, not so fast. There’s plenty to get excited about here...

    Still love driving my RS every time I get in it. So much fun in any type of weather conditions. Drift mode in the snow with snow tires is an absolute riot! The pops and bangs are icing on the cake. Closest to owning a rally car I'll ever get. Love it!

    Ford was so smart for bringing this over. I'm glad to see hot hatches making a comeback. Motor week has the best track tests.

    I traded in my 2013 sti for a RS man what a difference so glad I did. The difference is night and day. The sti once you get over 60-70mph feels like it has 150hp while the RS feels like it has 500hp. You don't even need to downshift. It just goes like crazy. Don't believe me, pull up next to one on the freeway.

    I own this car, the awd system is similar to the golf R system which a haldex system which at times you can feel the car working it's magic transferring power to the rear wheels. now I've owned and driven multiple sport cars and came from a 17 WRX and drove the STI and it is everything I expected and more. I bought the WRX because it was more of a daily driver and had more low end power even though I liked the more aggressive STI it also left a lot to be desired. People bitch about the interior and quality of the car but look at the Subaru WRX and STI it's the same interiors just different motor and AWD system. The car feels more solid than those cars I got mine for under 38k fully loaded and to get a loaded STI with an outdated motor was 40k, not to mention the very shitty paint jobs on the Subaru hence why I made the switch and enjoy this machine everyday

      trephination1 I just picked up an RS2 2016 with 11k miles fully loaded with the winter tire package for 32. Not bad considering the original price and markup like you mentioned. I couldn’t imagine paying 5-15k markup.

    I would love a car channel that would compete against the other to see you has the more accurate 0-60 times. I say this because on some of the British car channels they have this RS competing with the M2, and the GOLF R and the RS is nipping at the wheels of the M2 in straight line and track testing... so who's more accurate? the manufacturer or is it XCAR, CARFECTION, MOTOR TREND, CAR and DRIVER, ROAD and TRACK, CAR MAG, or MOTOR WEEK??

    13.6 @ 104mph with 350hp???? It fell on its face at the top....
    I had a 2005 Dodge SRT-4 with the Mopar Performance Stage 3 Turbo with toys that ran 12.8 @ 118mph on street tires... Something is not correct if its really 350hp.

      Yeah, a friend had a 1997 (I think) Nissan 200sx that ran 12.4 @109, rated at 285whp, so about 325bhp, but that car was light as heck.

      You have to disconnect the AWD system when running on the Dyno, otherwise you will get lower numbers. Because the AWD system sends different amounts of power to the rear depending on the situation you have to run it in FWD mode basically. Numbers from Dynos come in around 320 from what i've seen

    Manual only people, don't hate me for saying this. Europe has a 6-sp twin clutch automatic edition for the Focus RS and ST. Why not here? However, if Ford offers an automatic version of the Focus RS and ST here in North America, there shouldn't be too many of them (10% or less). Subaru's WRX is mainly manual only with a CVT option in only 15% of the entire make of the WRX would be the CVT. And I know many people describe the CVT with 4-letter words to describe it.

    according to this review the rs is slower 0-60 and quarter mile than the sti...? that's awesome i guess since i own an sti. they were boasting 350 hp on the rs so you'd think it would be faster.

    • @iamanoobiecheez
      @iamanoobiecheez 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Results vary from reviewer source to reviewer source. There can be differential by as much as whole whopping second if not more. Find a reputable trusted review source that reviewed both cars, under similar weather condition from the same test track and same driver cause weight of the driver makes a big difference not to mention driving skills. The car reviewed here might not have been broken in good. I believe the Focus RS does it anywhere from 4.5~ 4.7 sec 0-60 on a nice launch.

    • @chucko83
      @chucko83 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      IamAnoobiecheez motorweek also reviewed the 15 sti which was 4.6 and 13.2 I think. so it's the same reviewer.. maybe their own reviews vary?

    • @iamanoobiecheez
      @iamanoobiecheez 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      chucko83 Yeah their own reviews can vary too because of variance in weather condition and the condition of the car. It might not be broken in the same as sti.

      I ordered a 2017 Focus RS for sticker price. If you go to the forums they have a list of dealers which are doing the markup, but smaller dealerships tend to not have one. Call around and you might be able to find an allocation. Make sure you read up on all the questions you need to ask.

    That plastic "Ford performance" engine cover is surprisingly ugly and cheap looking. Not ideal in a car which will likely spend some time at car meets with it's hood open.
