- Passion is something we all seek, and relish when we have it. But what if you've failed to find your passion? What if failure IS your passion? Cass Phillipps discusses her path to find her passion with failure, and how it was born from her fear of failure and her failure to find passion.

I am so glad I watched this. I have to admit: I am a starter; a beginner; a dabbler; a jack of all trades, and a master of none.
I LOVE LEARNING ABOUT NEW THINGS, but If I work on something for more than a specific amount of time, I lose interest very QUICKLY!!! I am still looking for my "passion" :( ....:)

hyacinthdibley I just wanted to say being a dabbler, a trick of all trades is a passion, there’s no rule in life that says you have to have this over whelming passion, actually I find it limited and life’s experiences will also be limited, so enjoy all the things you do, humans may not even be wired to have a “so called passion,” do many things you love, forget about the whole passion thing, just live life dude. 😊
Being a dabbler isn't a bad thing.
Cass mentioned she's ran her own business, played violin for 16 years and designs games. These 3 things are all unrelated but they share the same skills (attention to detail, perfectionism, creative thinking, strategic planning, patience, dedication, autonomy.) All of these skills are highly valued. It's about taking those skills and finding something that encompasses those in the form of a career.

Cass thank you for doing this- I too am a Dabbler and feel stuck because I have so many interests but no obvious calling, and callings are really important to me. Thanks for letting us know we're not alone in feeling like this.
I cried when I watched this because I never heard anyone verbalize the things I (most everyone) experienced. I gave up college after 3 yrs, tried college again & gave up. Attempts at passionate pursuits took too long and hard to achieve. But after a 32 year successful I.T. career and successfully raising 3 children with my gorgeous wife of 35 years, I look back and see that all those failures are so DIM in comparison to what I achieved. But in my MIND...I failed? Retired, I'm trying again !
"Passion isn't doesn't equal love... sometimes it just grows on you."
That was one of the most important lines to me. We're constantly inundated with advice that you have to find something you're so in love with and pursue it as a career if you want to be successful. That's pretty overwhelming when you don't really know what you like to begin with.
I took a year off school to rethink what I wanted... but what I've really been doing all along is dabbling. Still held back and not taking the plunge. Maybe I've been too caught up in this false idea that passion is something you'll instantly know when you find it. Maybe I just haven't been giving enough time for things to grow on me.

I found out that learning about things is such a passion killer! I spend most of my time learning about the things that initially excite me, only to find out what a pain in the ass they'll be to actually start doing!

Thank you. Right now I'm licking my wounds after preparing for an event that failed in terms of making the revenue I had hoped for. I am proponent of following ones bliss but this scenario seems to be an ongoing theme and the passion I had for my craft is dwindling. Examining these feelings seem like a good idea. thank you
This is actually very interesting. Seems to me that there are a lot of people who by some crazy accident were forced into a small world of sensitive analyzing and came up with their own answers to the same questions that everyone else is facing. And I thinks it is worthwhile and meaningful to share these original answers, not everyone is mainstream and such approach opens mind a little bit.
Dabblers of the world....UNITE!!!! :D (At least for a little while until something more interesting comes along)

This was insightful, thanks. When I was younger I was also afraid of failure. I could skateboard, play guitar, play a ton of different sports, but I would never give any of them my all because I was afraid of failing at them. Which looking back seems silly, because if you give something your all then you will have a lower chance of failing at it.

many people are passionate about something and still suck at it, and they do fail also. The difference is that they have decided to stick with it. Like you drive motorcycles, finally you crash or drop it. You fix it up and just continue to drive it. Many times it sucks, it's cold, miserable and again you fall. But you stick with it. Many people drive for 20 years and still are not great drivers, but they like it and stick with it. Because they are passionate about it.
This was a good talk, better than most I've seen on the subject and I've seen them ALL, lol. I like her jacket, one button and creamy...very nice!

I enjoyed this, I really wouldn't pay much mind to the internet warriors.
If it's not apparent from the thousands of "find your passion" books and videos that our education system beat our passion out of us... we're born passionate, we're conditioned to be practical. If you start your life in passion, you'll trade off all of the consumption related BS that we're taught to obtain and as a result we create all the ways following our passion is "unrealistic" or "naive." Education is the problem, people are not cookie cutter!
the worst that could happen is trying passion, struggling to find it, fail, go back to doing w/ you were doing, which was struggling to find passion....
I remember when I was about 8 or 10 or so, I got my first bike. Nobody in my family would help me learn to ride it. It was just "Go figure it out, we bought it for you, that's all you get from us." This was pretty much how things were with everything else in my family too, so it didn't seem like a big deal. Anything I wanted to do I had to figure out for myself. After a couple weeks I wasn't very good at it, so they took the bike away and gave it to one of their friend's kids.
maybe you should see the TED Talks on "How to find and do what you love". Lecturer specifically speaks about 3 things. 1. know yourself (which has 3 subtopics: strengths, values, and experiences), 2. Do them and a couple of reminders. 3. Change your surrounding.
It's worth watching if you watched this video.

Interesting idea, that failure can be a passion. I understand the Dabbler thing, (also known as a Scanner), I have often tried new hobbies and been great at them, for a while, then lost interest when things started to get a bit harder, and it's always the discomfort of not doing as well as I was, or, Failing. And it's so much easier to just give up, there's always another hobby I can move on to. Jack of all trades, definitely

Are these ted talk ever supposed to help? Cause every time I watch one, it seem to be always someone going on about their life story on how they became awesome and you can be too because they did and that's it. It never seems that they will actually give advice,. or am I missing the point?

In fact making friends with failure and being light hearted about it takes you to living in the present, without the regrets of the past or the anxieties of the future. My family struggled to work to bring us up. You don't know me and I don't know you, but the difference between you and me is that I'm working to make a difference just like anybody else out there, while you're sitting in front of a computer screen complaining how stupid it is to have a passion because you're dictated by where you live and how you live. You wanna know what it's like to be successful? Find a fucking passion

Ms Phillipps, I hope you read this. We need your skills! I work at an assisted living place for the elderly. Too many of them sit in their various chairtypes snoozing in the lobby, bc people-watching is their only real hobby. Don't you agree that they could play vid games if the software was right for them? They'd complain less, feel more hooked into life, brag to their g'g'kids, and have more to talk about? Maybe collaborate with each other for these games? Certainly to teach each other how to get started, but also with games designed to utilize partnerships so they can stay social and not withdraw. Wha'say?
Wow I really has an adverse reaction to watching this. I'm somewhat suicidal now because I don't feel like I'm ever going to be happy in life.
This is just advertising for this dude's book. There was nothing feasible here. This guy and TED owe me 15 minutes of my life back.

I think these are interesting times. Young people are 'experts' now, or at least coming off that way. Must be a first.
Don't you have to dabble in a lot of things in order to find your passion? It makes you a well-rounded person too.
I find it interesting how her fear of riding a bicycle evolved into an interest of riding a motorcycle.

What's wrong with being a dabbler? Not everybody is destined to be a master of one thing. For everyone who can't seem to find their passion I recommend a book called "The Renaissance Soul" by Margaret Lobenstine.
I'd rather learn and experience a lot of things well than one thing perfectly. To me its all about expending myself and having the feeling of learning new things instead of having other people think I'm number 1 in one thing. If you think about it its really a thing of this day and age, you have to reach the top and be as successful as possible. But does that make you happy? I'd rather know a lot and have people come to me when they don't know something cause 'she probably knows'. To me dabbling is a love of life and its ever changing state.

More interesting and realistic talk that those talks about I m cool, i am with cool people, I m cool cause I went to south america, follow your dreams, imagination is the limit.... Dude...dude... no... Reality is the limit. If you ve an exhausting 8 hours job in a factory, you have to cook, clean, have to take care of your mother, of childs, of debts... you cant be an astronaut... really dont have time for your passion nor to look for it. Just to see some talks in some spare time. It s good to find somenone who said... I failed. The normal thing it s to fail, not everyone in the world is bill gates...

Iván Sergile very true. luck is the biggest part in the equation. What did Bill Gates do to be born in the USA at the right time and place. What did he do to have his brain, for example, or even to be born or to be a human being, and not some other living creature. The answer is: nothing.
A billion things happen inside our bodies and we are can´t control them. If so, why would we be able to control our external world? We have control over a few things, and nothing more. The ones that hit the "dreamed success" are the luckiest, period. However, everyone can be succesful at having a normal middle class and happy life full of love and friendship. And really, who wants more than that?

I think that if you are stuck in those places, then the only way out is to work harder, to move somewhere quieter and safer, slowly remove the things that stop you (such as crime). In all honesty it may not happen within the poor person's lifetime, and will have to be fulfilled by children or grandchildren. That is the way the poor are kept down.
At the end of the day, none of this is possible without education. Working and trying to educate yourself is a monumental ask but then your children benefit. I have benefited from a poor family and am able to follow my dreams thanks to my forefathers/mothers. These talks are for the future generations if not the present ones.

Is it possible to find your passion by way of spiritual awareness? I'm so confused. At 23 years old, I'm still searching for my passion. I like to read , write and listen to music but I'm not the best at the second aforementioned and I don't know how that would translate into the jobs I'm dreaming of having later in life. And about that, I don't even know what kind of job I want to have. I seem to be motivated by financial gain and the desire to positively affect the world. Would I ever know?

ok so I want to be a game designer, I'm 24 turning 25, I have no college degree, my highschool grade suck ass, I did some computer science but that was 5 years ago, didn't, finish the course, tried drafting didn't finish it either, I have 20k $ student loan debt. now im doing personal fitness trainer just coz im pretty good at martial arts and maybe I could be teaching people, this time I paid for my tuition. but I don't think this is really what I wanted. I feel really stuck and lost right now im working as valet 3x a week making 500-600 $ a week, bare enough for me. I live with my parents at the moment. which really shameful since im already 24, now im really lost I keep trying so many stuff but nothing ever works out. I did some research about how to be successful in game design turns out its pretty scary. right now I don't know what do I really want to do... if I go for being a game designer with my pretty lame grades and no college degree age 24-25, no money, the only thing I have is i'm pretty good at drawing and art, I played a lot of games. what do I have to do from here?
+gerard peralta Don't give up.The answer is in front of you. You said you want to be a game designer. I suggest you try your best to do just that. Take some courses, talk to people who are good in this field. Start with small steps, don't be afraid of what you read about being a successful game designer...you will get to that, in time...just start with the basics. It's ok to be scared, we all are when we step out of our comfort zone.Good luck!
+Adelina Pilaf thank you, I actually set up an appointment in a small art school this Thursday, thers just 1 thing im worried about is my tuition, I am planning to get another loan to pay the tuition fees coz that's the best action I see coz saving up money for it, with no college degree and no decent job will take too much time and I don't want to waste more time, but the problem is ill be in more debt and im worried how am I supposed to pay that off? its gonna be another 20k more or less, sorry im already thinking about the future its just I made so much wrong decision in life and always fail at the end. thers actually another option for me, my parents are asking me to just do apprenticeship in a pipeline company/oil industry its a hard labor job outside work which really sucks since I live in Canada and its pretty darn cold here, but its a pretty good money. but that's not really what I want like ill be spending 8-12 hours of my day doing that, when I think about it, its sucks! but ill be able to live on my own and pay my debt eventually. or maybe I could keep doing fitness trainer since im already on it? im really confuse I don't want to make another wrong decision. what do you think?
I can't tell you what to do...If I were you,I'd make a list of my debt, my income and try to figure something out...like: how much time do I have to pay everything?Will I manage to do it? Also, there are some free courses online, if you want to check them out and be sure you're really into game design.: edX, Stanford University,Free Code Camp, etc. Please take some time and really think about what is best for yourself.Don't rush into anything.Good luck!

Gerard, your very situation is my passion. I would suggest searching for a life coach. Speak to a few and see who you connect with on a personal level. Start looking at what you've already accomplished. You have drive. Your not afraid to work. Just open your mind to the idea that your life has some purpose it was intended for, and that very purpose you posses is exactly what someone else needs. Les Brown says it takes patience with consistent action. Robin Sharma calls it grit. John Maxwell calls it determination. Whatever it's called, everyone that's ever made believed that there was something within them, and they didn't stop looking until it was fulfilled. Where a coach might help you is by narrowing the "guessing." You watched this video, so you are already on your way to enlightenment. Stay hungry. Ask for advice. I fail in my attempts with Women. When I love a Woman I use the wrong words and/or the wrong actions. I understand that I have become a smart person because of that, but my heart that smells like a dump site needs a break. I'm 44 FGS.
Thank you YT for giving me a place to express my feelings...... Somehow I'm still frustrated. When will Women start to speak MY language in stead of trying to play "hard-to-get"? I guess "my language" includes any clear signal that indicates a possibility of being together privately, so we can attempt to share happiness.

I am in engineering, graduating with the diploma this month. But I think I am interested in graphic design. But how would anyone know if something is really for them without much experience in it? And if I am to take a somewhat blind dive into it, I will then have college fees and if it turns out that I dislike it, that would be terrible.. >< Any advice?
+Sarah Ng Most things you don't have to pay a lot of money in order to test out. I bet graphic design is the same way. You just got to look for - a guess is - the right software to try it?

I am from Singapore and local design schools here isnt that great. I am thinking if i should apply for a online university or a private school in Singapore. Singapore's private design schooling cost about USD$40000.. >.

you're missing a key element. Creativity. Those with a burning passion think of a way to turn that into a job that NO ONE else can do. They become the first of their kind. That's what it means to have a passion. Watch Larry Smith videos. He's hard hitting and telling it like it is, he knows that the economy SUCKS, he's an economist himself! He knows how hard it is to get a job, so trust me, you're better off following your passion, as long as the job you make with it, is not out there yet.

I think she had some good words to say however I think her conclusion was very wrong. She says she is thinking about worst case scenarios, but in fact it seems she isn't. This is one of her what I interrupted founding views, she assumes that everyone would have similar fears, and in the large part those fears would be over exaggeration. This is a women without children, and what seems like a partner. Life is not always easy, and for ever success story there are 100's if not 1,000's of failures.
so what, to find your passion you need to start doing things you don't really care about? things that don't interest you?. I don't think so.
none of my passions are particularly profitable and are also expensive...
you should have a look at attention deficit disorder. This is a classic symptom, the trail of unfinished hobbies and interests. :)
+Susan Ainslie I don't think is this... I'm like her. We can keep total attention and dedication for a period of time, can be months, even years. Initially we learn fast and even better than average, but one day we just can't get any better in that activity and we start loosing interest (with afraid of failure, of not being good enough).
Uh.. this talk great, but i think there's a misconception about passion needing to be your job. Not necesarily, a hobby can be a passion, gathering with your friends or an extra activity can be a passion. if you can turn it into a job well that's great but if not then i only recomend never to stick in a job you don't like becouse is safe or you will never put effort and become good at it.
Also the chance of failure always exist so you better take the risk to fail trying to please you.

This TedTalk is only half complete, only half a success and not really completely helpful, since she has not really completed a success herself. Her claim to success is the telling others of her failures and that she is successful because she says she is. Isn't that a bit like saying my passion is about sculpting and telling everyone that I'm going to be good at sculpting, but not actually doing anything about it?
