I'm a recent physics graduate with a passion for stand up comedy. I've been applying at science museums all across the US to work in an educator, presenter role. I finally got a job offer for $15/hour at a great science museum. But that pay was low for a college graduate. My mom convinced me not to take it. 6 months later, I'm still looking and have taken a big hit to my morale since. Lately I've been thinking, maybe Mom was dead wrong on this one.

She gave a great speech and there is a lot to take away from it. But this definition of passion doesn't really hold up in many scenarios. In life there will be many instances where you will need to give your full attention and energy to things right in front of you that you don't enjoy but HAVE TO do for one reason or another.

    My notes:
    - Passion is a feeling, not a plan. And Feeling's change.
    - Not everything you do needs to fit into your "passion". Just try things. Go out there and try things.
    - Don't worry if your career isn't something you want to do for the rest of your life
    - Success fuels passion more than passion fuels success
    - There is nothing wrong if you do not have a clear passion. Try things you like!
    - You could easily miss out on your passion by not focusing on what you're doing now, if you're focused on looking for your "passion"
    - Don't wait for your passion to show up. Solve problems you like to solve.
    My key takeaway:
Go try things and do things you like instead of purely focusing on finding your passion (or trying to do things you think will fit into it) because passion is not a plan, it's a feeling, and feelings change.

Sure but a little bit of a misconception. Success does not come without starting something and working through it. If you don't have any initial passion where is the drive to even start? There has to be atleast enough interest in something to get started. Now this doesn't need to be this overwhelming life passion but there does need to be enough interest or a spark to get started on something.

Now that I've finished my uni, gone on an internship and have been trying to find work, I'm starting to realize that this tendency to focus on passion has deprived me of years of growth and potential opportunities but also that it's okay for me to think about different ventures. I agree! Being passionate about education and advancing your mind is most important. There is never an answer of what you're "supposed to do." I love when Terri said passion can come and go. There's no way to measure how passionate you are about something because you could lose that passion tomorrow. But one thing that will always benefit you, and will always move you forward is education. New material. Whether it comes from a book, a TED talk, or a podcast. Learning something new everyday keeps you well rounded and growing. Do you think it's hard for current students to stay passionate about learning? Do you think students get discoursed by searching too hard for their "perfect career" or "forever passion?" I'd love to hear feedback!!

The hiring manager doesn't want to hear that my passion (or just something I love doing) is creating and wearing costumes or making hand-crafted art. They want to hear (if I'm interviewing for a graphic designer position) that I'm passionate about marketing or design, or whatever. They don't want your real-world answers.
I also love that you mention how this question can be and often is triggering and stressful. And this part - 'you don't follow your passion; your passion follows you' - So true!

I needed to hear this. I’m a senior in high school and everyone always asks me what I’m gonna do after high school, what college I want to go to, what career choice I want and what am I passionate about. I always answer “I don’t know”. I feel panic because it seems like other kids my age now where they wanna go they want to do with their life and I feel useless when I compare myself to them. I needed to hear this because it’s just makes sense that there’s nothing wrong with me and that I had the wrong idea of what passion was and it was stressing me out! I feel relieved knowing that I’m normal and that she said what I could do in the meantime to go after opportunities. I’m not so scared of “being stuck” anymore. This was so helpful!

In fact, last month my 7 year old son begged to wash our house windows. My three kids and I smiled and laughed while we passionately washed the windows. If you don't believe me just ask my wife, she'll roll her eyes and shake her head while admitting it's all true.
To prove your point, I only learned about my passion after stating my own window washing business because it seemed like a good way to make money.

People who basically do busy work for their career and have nobody that will notice if they disappear one day don't have "Passion" that follows them around. I'm currently trying to narrow down my options but it's difficult to find a career that is both fulfilling to me personally and pays decently, and has a decent work-life balance. Instead of searching for your passions, try searching for your values instead and that will help you see how many opportunities there really are. Committing to a university to attain a degree that will leave you in debt then suddenly realizing it's not what you want to pursue is a scary though, which is why I'm so obsessed with wanting to known exactly what I will be doing in the next 5,10,20 years. And believe me, I need to remind myself this as much as others, you don't NEED to know. Work is a big part of our lives, but there are also other things that matter most :)

    I'm a gearhead.
    That is my passion.
I'll never be rich, I'll spend my entire life covered in grease, dirt and petroleum products. I'm sore at days end, I'm exhausted and covered in filth every day.
But when I start driving home from work, I turn on the metalhead rock and by the end of three blocks, I've got a smile you could see on Google maps.
My advice to everyone is to find something that you can do that gives you satisfaction at the end of day regardless of how you feel or look. Money is great, but happiness.....
That is the the secret of a lifetime career, and emotional stability.
Jobs may blow, bosses may be pricks, but if you can smile about what you have done on your way home, you are in at the very least a halfway decent place.
Amazing enough, this also applies to every aspect of your life. Thonk about it....

This is one of the best speeches I have ever heard. I've been trying to find my passion for years. I needed to hear this. The truth is that passion comes after we start doing something. People waste years trying to find their "passion'. "follow your passion" is the worse advice one can receive. It's like chasing dust in the wind.

I'm a senior in high school and I always get bombarded with the question- so what do you want to do? who do you want to become? and also parents and elders telling me to research and find out what I wanna do and I just want to scream "I DONT KNOW."
I love doing so many things, I want to have my own business, I want to study human behaviour, I love art but I cannot help but feel like I'm doing the wrong things and I didn't select the right subjects in high school. It's so scary because I don't want to be the lost sheep in a crowd of aspiring young adults.
I want to be a boss, I want to have freedom, I want to be happy... but I don't know who I want to become.

Choose to do what you love. Just go find things that you love (try things) and choose them (can be multiple things). Passion is a feeling you get when you are doing what you love. So therefore... you can choose passion. It's a feeling, and you can choose to have that feeling.

Such a powerful message. I’ve spent the past 3+ years, trying to discover my passion and calling for a career, but have been so stagnant and haven’t made any real concrete decisions which has been spiraling me into a negative cycle of depression and anxiety. our passion will come when we make sacrifices in the present that lead us to greater things. Waiting for that “perfect” moment, opportunity, or interest is a recipe for disaster.

That's what's happening in my case. I decided to do a degree in Physics only because I was somewhat good at it, comfortable with it, too scared to trying anything else and not at all sure what exactly it is that I want to do. I'm in my second year now and I find that I do like physics but I discovered so many other things at college that I liked just as much or more. I do know that I don't want to be or do just one thing in life, I want to do and be many things. So that's where I stand for now.

I've struggled my whole damn life with the question: what is my passion? And this lifted such a huge burden from my shoulders. It is okay to just live and see where your life takes you, you don't need to know what you're going to do in 5 years.
I love to work jobs that last for few months and can sometimes be continued few months longer. I've always been told that this is the wrong way of doing it but what's the point doing something for years and being totally miserable when you could've been doing many jobs and be curious every time you change jobs, eventually ending up with so many experiences and same amount of money as from the boring option.
Best advice is the one: ''Just do something. Go do it''. What ever takes you forward at this point in life, just do that.

Of course, you should never "settle" for a career path or "settle" for a person, but I think the speaker is right...if you don't have that burning desire/passion that only a few have anyway, simply take a job that will help you get closer to it. It's ok to take an average Joe job...it could very well lead to your passion. Don't hold fear about losing your job either...it is great opportunity to explore new interests.

And for some it was the worst talk because she emphasized the value of money. You could try to follow your passion if you have it figured out but it's difficult if you aren't suceeding and yet the bills keep coming all the same. Kudos to those who have made fortunes on their passions and good luck to those who are so afraid of trying anything for they might end up searching for something to do their whole lives.
