Update V0.95 | Geared 900° steering | Convert Xboxcontroller into steering wheel with 3D printing!

- Hey guys! Just want to give a brief overview over the last update - it's actually working way better than I expected! 900° steering rate and self centering for a waaaay better feeling.
The black disk stuck with tape to the smaller wheel is just for testing - I'm in the process of designing a new and bigger wheel.
For everyone new here - What you see here is a 3D printed kit to convert an Xbox One controller into a steering wheel with throttle and brake pedal and a fully working 6+R manual shifter.
The game played is Beam.NG drive.

This is incredible man! I didn't even know something like this was possible with the tolerances of fdm 3d printing, you're a genius and I hope you keep working on the project!

Once we have it put together we can race on Forza or some other racing game together(you included brother)
Downloaded the model and upscaled the wheel to 300mm. Added an additional brace for the steering shaft as well and made a clamp to secure it to the table. Unfortunately it just doesnt have the responsiveness i'd like and find myself having to rotate the wheel around 90 degrees before any input is registered. This is with the deadzones set to 0 in steam.

Would a digital handbrake sufficient? "Mapping" the brake to a button?
@@BeanJ Actually handbrake is better when analogue, like throttle, steering or brake. Though shifting can be sequential, up & down.

This video was just a little update for the 900° steering wheel - in my previous videos I've shown more about the whole project. I wrote a little application that maps the joystick positions to the gear shifts. I will upload the software with my next video, I need to make a "How to" video to the conversion kit. Next iteration will be a bigger steering wheel printed out of multiple parts. Unfortunately I designed it too big for my printer, that demotivated quite a bit... I'm trying to get an update out in the next month or so, but I really can't put any date on that, as I've changed workplace and I really love my work there 😃

I want to design everything to a state me and all of you can be happy with - after that I will be looking to design the kit for other controllers. 👍🏻 However, the sticky tape one should already work on the PS4 controller 😉 I only have an Xbox controller so I can't really test the software 🤔 will have a look into it.

@@BeanJ i like ps4 controllers but i typically use ds4windows on my pc because theres a big percentage of games that only support xbox controllers or alike
@@aircoolbro21scndling49 changing the software to recognize the controller wouldn't be the problem - problem is, that I need to redesign the 3d model for the form of the ps4 controller and the position of the sticks 😃 I had a PS4 controller once but just sent it back after n hour or so, because I don't really like the stick placement. 🤷
@@BeanJ i understand that, i was just saying that because i personally use my ps4 controller the most (not to mention my 1 Xbox controller has a broken left bumper among other problems) i agree it would be super cool to see this with one, and the workaround (like ds4windows) for games that dont support them. it shouldn't be too hard to just do a ps4 controller conversion if you have a 3d model for it at proper scale (like i did/might still), I've designed something very similar (from scratch, though same concept, a controller sim wheel conversion) and printed it myself without knowing this existed, but instead for my ps4 controller which i still have the original files and full design for. i now have a better printer and better design skills but found this and figured i wouldnt work on a redesign since you have a ps4 controller on your "to-do list" (for 5 or possibly more months?) if I'm going to print anything id prefer it work with my only fully-working controller to ensure theres no possible way the controller messes with my experience so i get the full feel of the wheel and not a tainted experience by my drift'y xbox controller, not to mention my preference for ps4 controllers.

Guilty! I have designed a new steering wheel (as big as a heatbed, so it's still printable without piecing), but I have some problems with the center part... But at least I'm printing again 😃 so yea... Hope I can post some updates soon. I've changed workplace and it's quite hard to get anything done in my spare time.

This project is cool, but you cant drift with a non ffb steering wheel in carx, so dont buy it for that. Carx with wheel and no assists in general is really hard, but if u want a ffb wheel, buy a used g27 for ~100 bucks. This thing is more of a cool gadget/project

Hey, I love what you are doing. I really wanted a sim racing setup for Christmas, but instead of dropping 500$ on one, i can just 3d print it. My only question is can I use this with forza horizon 5. Also, where can i get some instructions on the software and how to setup all the hardware. Thanks so much for all your work.
You're welcome, glad you like it 😄 unfortunately Forza horizon won't work with my setup - just with sequential shifting. H-pattern-shifting can't be used without a "real" steering wheel... For instructions I would refer to some of my other videos, can't tell you which one right now 😄 but I've made some videos explaining all of that. I'm working on a new software version at the moment, when I'm done with that I'll upload a new video with instructions. ☺️ And thanks for stopping by! Really appreciated!

How are you breaking and accelerating?
With the levers triggering the L2 and R2 analog triggers. The levers themselve are pulled with fishing line in my case.

Unfortunately I'm not able to write any software for consoles, so no, I'm not able to support Xbox one. A newer Xbox one controller would need a slight redesign of the clips I guess 🤔 and yes, I'm still alive, thanks for the concerns. 😄 The software is already released on my Patreon page completely for free. In fact I've made all my Patreon posts available for everyone for free 😄 right now I'm in the design and printing process of a (kind of) full size steering wheel, and I hope I find the time to do a video about it. Would this work on Forza? But love the idea!!
Forza unfortunately only supports 6+R shifting with a "real" steering wheel. My setup would only work with sequential shifting.

Hi, will this work with xbox series x? I dont have a printer and would like to know if you sell them? Will this work for snowrunner and forza 5?
Unfortunately it won't work on consoles. And I haven't tested those games, so I can't tell for sure. If you can map the number keys to the gears in game it should work.

Hey! im praying you see this since you havent responded to anyones comments in over 2 years! Anyway im having a bug with the software, whats happening is that every time i open the software it centers and i cant shift anywhere.

Hi there. I was wondering if I can use this with Vjoy. I intend to use a phone gyro sensor with opentrack and Vjoy and it works but I don't know how to make the Vjoy(virtual joystick) appear on your software. If you now anything that could let me know. Thanks!
Mhh, tough guess. 🤔 Did you try running the app in admin mode? And you have to have vjoy running and activated before starting my program. Isn't vjoy capable of simulating x input? Maybe theres a plugin for opentrack? 🤔 Haven't actually tried this, these are just some thoughts
@@BeanJ After setting up opentrack in the game controllers in windows i see Vjoy and I can see when i move my phone the X ,Y and Z rotation sliders move so it works I just don't know how use this in your program the dot doesn't move in the software(Seems like your software only recognizes Xbox and DirectInput USB devices and Virtual ones like Vjoy seem to not be detected but other programs like Fergo Joystick to Midi seems to recognize Vjoy device just like any other usb controller as Microsoft pc joystick device) Could it be that the program needs X and Y axis and not X and Y rotation(RX and RY) they are not the same axis I would assume that's the issue I have to convert the axis RX, RY to X and Y axis and try then.
Okay I was able to convert the axis and make it Xbox Xinput but still nothing works and if i click on the screen i get error unhandled exepction. Invalid parameters... Do you have older version to try out maybe with only Xbox support

I'm on it 😉 design is ready, just need to find the time to print that huge thing. Forza does not support single gears without a proper steering wheel unfortunately. Only thing I could do is sequential shifting.

If somebody can print me one of these, I would buy a few for the right price , but I want the steering wheel and the shifting knob to be bigger. Is more like medium to almost large size. I want that more hands on feeling. I just feel small steering would be uncomfortable

You can activate the software and just try it in an open text-document. 😊

Every gear does hold its position just like a real shifter would. If you pull on the gear it's centering itself - its the part I spent the most time on, imo its feeling pretty realistic. I do have some other videos with a more detailed view over the components of the kit, maybe have a look? 😉 Thanks for your comment!

You could plug in into phones supporting usb OTG. Problem would be that my software won't work on Android and the games won't support the shifting 🤔

You should look for Akaki here on TH-cam - he has designed a full HOTAS for all kinds of controllers!
Hi, I have a question: how did you achieve the self centering?
It wasn't at first. In the current iteration its done with a rubber going through a hole through the axle. When you turn the steering wheel the rubberband will turn around the axle centering the wheel. The more you turn the more it tries to center. Sounds a bit dumb but works quite good actually.

You can just print anything but the shifter part, but you need the right baseplate for the pedal mount

Tutorial
The controller isn’t showing up in the menu for analog shifter.exe. I am on windows 11.
Haven't tested it on Win11 😬 and i'm not too keen to upgrade either... Guess I'll have to open up my git repository

Is shifter works with assetto corsa and forza horizon 5?
Nope, unfortunately both games only support shifting with a "real" steering wheel. With Forza horizon it should be possible to at least use the sequential shifter, maybe with assetto Corsa aswell
@@BeanJ maybe, that could be emulated. Axis positions to gear positions.
For Forza horizon that is not possible, the function to shift single gears is deactivated on the driver level, my guess is that's some licensing stuff with Logitech and other steering wheel vendors. For other games like assetto corsa the problem is, that if I use some kind of emulation for the shifting I would have to overwrite the xinput part that's managing the Xbox controller inputs... It's not an easy task, I guess. I'm giving it all out for free, maybe I should upload my code to a git repository so others could try their implementations with it. 🤔

Nope, unfortunately it doesn't. I don't have any axis left on the Xbox controller... Thought about combining brake and throttle to one axis, but with that it's not possible to brake and throttle at the same time 🤔

I’m also struggling with the steering wheel a little bit and it sometimes gets out of center and where it’s not straight and also whenever I steer it doesn’t steer for like a quarter turn then just turns a lot and it’s sensitive and is horrible to drive with any suggestions?
You can try to set the Deadzone of the steering analogstick to a smaller number. I think I've set mine to 0 🤔 maybe thats helping with the out of center problem aswell 🤔
